5-0 out of 5 stars Great Machine
After using a portable planer for about 8 years, I decided to invest a bigger machine. This planer is identical to the DC-380 exept for a different paint job. And it is heavy!I am one of the lucky ones to have a hoist to help unload it. If you don't, have 2 or 3 helpers to unload and set it up. It took me almost two days to get it up and running. I first determined that it was too low for me, so I solved that problem by putting large wooden blocks between the bottom of the stand and the moble base. By the way, that moble base is an absolute must if you plan to move it at all. Then I discovered that the cord was too short, so I put a longer cord on with a twist lock plug. Most of my machines have twist lock plugs, anyway. When it is assembled you must be sure the infeed, cutter, and outfeed rollers are adjusted properly. There is a gage block that you must make, and the manual shows you how. The dust chute has an outlet of 5", so a trip to the local hardware store to get a 5" to 4" reducer and some duct tape, because is was not a good fit. It is essential to hook it up to a dust collecter, or you will be hip deep in chips very fast. After all was said and done, I am pleased with its peformance. The serrated infeed roller keeps the wood moving through at a steady pace, and it has two speeds, but I stick with the slow speed to get the best finish. The roller extensions eliminate snipe, once they are adjusted. If you get rough cut lumber, this is a worthwhile investment.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good planer, trouble with dust collection.
I purchased this planer 6 weeks ago. The "dust hood" that is sold by Toolcrib for this turned out to be ( not mentioned in the catalog) to be 5". I have tried working with both Toolcrib and Delta to find a way to connect this to my 4" dust collector but, after receiving 2 more dust hoods and 2 adapters that were purported to work, I still do not have a solution. I've not had a chance to plane much wood on it yet, but it looks well made (although in China). Anyone that has found a solution let me know. ... Read more

Amazon.com Review

So you've found an entire block of condemned Victorian houses, and the mayor has given you exclusive rights to the flooring in exchange for--oh, let's just say--a bit of support in his re-election campaign. With that still two years off, the only problem facing you now is removing the random pits, warps, and other blemishes of this salvage-lumber gold mine. For professional tasks that mock portable planers' capabilities, Jet's 15-inch enclosed-stand model gives you smooth surfaces as long as you keep it fed. Powered by a completely enclosed, 3-horsepower induction motor, it efficiently converts 230 volts into 13,500 cuts per minute at 4,500 rpm. The positive gear drive system adjusts depth quickly, and, with its smooth-cranking hand wheel, you can slice up to 1/8 of an inch off boards as large as 15 inches wide and 6 inches thick. Infeed and outfeed tables use three industrial steel rollers each to ensure smooth transfer from the planer's nonslip serrated intake all the way through the knives. You'll appreciate features like the smaller return rollers on top for handling large planks and the magnetic safety switch that prevents the machine from automatically turning on after power outages. Set on four heavy-duty, cam-lock casters, it easily rolls into position and stays where you place it. Go on and take the offer to gut those houses this year. --Justin Paul ... Read more

Features

  • Two steel work return rollers on top of the machine to make transferring your work back easier
  • Powerful 3 HP totally enclosed fan cooled motor, 3 v-belt delivers full power with magnetic switch
  • Steel feed rollers, serrated infeed and smoother outfeed, allow for 1/8" depth of cut
  • Cutterhead features jackscrews with springs to make knife adjustments easy and accurate
  • Exclusive 4" dust port angled to the side designed for efficient chip removal and to keep the dust hose out of the way of your work

4-0 out of 5 stars Only game in town
It is probably known to many woodworkers that virtually all the Taiwanese 15" planers are made in one factory, Chiu Ting. This is really a critique of the generic Chiu Ting planer design, which dominates its price niche. I have a JWP-15HO, purchased in the mid-90s, and I have rebuilt a Grizzly 20" Chiu Ting damaged in a shop fire. During the rebuild, the quality of the castings and machining impressed me greatly. Chiu Ting is a conscientious manufacturer.

The Jet gives a very good finish, virtually no snipe, the power of the 3HP motor is entirely adequate, the knife-setting gauge works well, and the owner's manual is good. Jet has a reputation for having a slightly better cutterhead design than some of its competitors, and that was the main reason I chose this particular brand. The knives are forced down against spring pressure by the setting jig, and then bottom out against elevating screws. We have all had the experience of knives squirming when we tighten the gib screws, and the Jet knives will do that, but at least only in one direction, up. It's not a perfect system, but better than most. The planer arrived in perfect condition, and set up at the factory so closely to specifications that I didn't have to change a thing.

The generic faults are these: one rotation of the elevating handle raises the table 5/64, which is nonintuitive for American woodworkers used to some even-numbered multiple of 1/8. Chip exhaust has to be quite powerful---I use a dedicated 700 CFM dust collector---and even then sometimes chips will fall ahead of the outfeed roller and dent the finished surface. Big chips easily wedge behind the bed rollers and will score the stock. The switch location interferes with hand access to one table lock, tho I have obtained good results not using the table locks at all. When the dust collector hood is attached, in order to access the cutterhead expeditiously, the outfeed return roller really has to be removed permanently.

Were I to purchase a Chiu Ting again, I would choose a brand with a polyurethane outfeed roller, and I would be watching for further improvements in the cutterhead ergonomics. Long-term, I am curious how these Taiwanese motors stand up, in particular the starter switches. I gave four stars because this machine needs attentiveness and resourcefulness to do the job. It's simply not in the same realm as an old Powermatic or Delta wedge-bed.

5-0 out of 5 stars For serious amateurs
All of the previous reviews here are accurate. I love mine and really appreciate having the extra set of blades. Manual is confusing in advising the use of 50 wt. gear oil after 25 hours of use. What they mean is transmission oil used in 4 wheelers or 4 wheel Drives. Blades are easy to set. Thickness gauge is useless. Get calipers, dust collector, and hearing protection.
Have two or three friends to help unload the 500 lb. crate. Once on the ground and in place they can go home so you can be alone with your new friend. JET help line is very helpful and will bend over backwards to advise and make it right. Take the time to set it up correctly so you learn what all the adjustments can do.

4-0 out of 5 stars Easy Setup
I reviewed both the Delta and the Jet. The main reason for deciding on Jet was how easy it was to access the blades. The blades are easily gotten to with "no motor in the way". Blades can easily be remove and replaced within 15 minutes, including setup.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent!
I've had this tool for about 5 years. It has been flawless. The construction is rock-solid. The tool came shipped on a pallet enclosed in a wood crate. It was perfect right from the box and required only minor assembly.

It has plenty of power even when planing 15" wide hardwood boards. Unlike the portable planers I've used, this one planes boards smooth without snipe. The built-in wheels inside the enclosed base make it easy to move around and the brake makes it stay put when you want it to.

Buy this tool with confidence. I am very fussy and I love this tool.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good, Powerful, Reliable
As a furniture builder, a clean board is essential. I rely on this machine more than I imagined I would. It is a stable in my shop, and gets many hours of rough use. I have never had a problem with it. Here are the issues: You will need to wire in a 220V circuit. I put in a 30A breaker and a 12 guage wire, to USA wiring code. If you buy one, plan on having it delivered with a pallet jack, because it comes in a large 500+ lb box. Don't plan on turning it on immediately, you'll have to calibrate it. Buy a micrometer, you'll need it to adjust the intake feed roller, blades and eject roller. The instruction book shows how to make a calibration block, but it is just not accurate enough to eliminate feed roller marks in softwood. Get yourself a good steel straight edge to adjust the table feed rollers, they'll put a dent in your cut if not adjusted correctly. It took me about an hour to setup, but it is worth it. Calibration is easy, just takes a while. It makes consistent cuts, but the height guage is worthless. You better plan on measuring height some other way, I use calipers. Estimate how far to turn the table height? Try VooDoo or a fortune-teller. The blades dull quickly (not Jet's fault) and when they do, you'll chip instead of cut. It is a good planer, very stable, three belts keep the blades cutting through even the toughest hardwoods. You MUST have a dust collector (I have the Jet DC-1100 - works great, plenty of debris storage), without one, the machine will clog. BTW: The Powermatic is the same saw, just a finer buffed steel table...save your money and get the Jet. ... Read more

Amazon.com Review

JET's planer/molder handles material up to 13 inches wide andup to 6 inches in height. The tool's 1-1/2-horse, 110-volt motor (youcan easily rewire it to 230 volts) spins the three-knife cutterhead.Depending on the application, the machine runs 10 to 20 board feet perminute. The motor is fan-cooled and enclosed, too, so it doesn'toverheat and stays protected from dust. The cast-iron table lendsplenty of heft and contact surface, while the rubberized infeed andoutfeed rollers support the work without marring it. As is standardwith most planers, it comes with an incorporated dust chute--so it'ssimple to hook up to a dust collector and keep the shop clean. Fourlockable casters (not standard) make it easy to maneuver the tool in atight shop. For people working in home restoration, this tool is agodsend. To match new replacement molding with the existing material, copy the profile of the existing molding, get custom knives made, andcut your own replacement. A helpful video is included that walks youthrough the process of changing and setting blades. This isunquestionably a solid tool, ideal for home woodworkers looking to stepup from a benchtop unit, and especially for remodelers and This OldHouse-type guys who need an good way to accurately match existingtrim. --Jon Groebner ... 4-0 out of 5 stars maybe try the 16 inch
When I bought this, about a year ago, it seemed like a good choice for a home hobbiest. The 15 inch Delta,Jet,or Powermatic, would have been nicer, but they were a couple hundred dollars or so more money. I think it works great. The rollers are real grabby, and I get 3 inches of snipe on each end, maybe it is user error or machine setup, I don't know. The mobile base is nice, but it doesn't lock down as hard as it should, but good enough. I would look at the new 16 inch model now which is almost the same price. Most wood is never over 13 inches, but for gluing boards together 16 inches would be a lot nicer. The outfeed and infeed rollers are ok. The problem is, the table moves up and down instead of the cutter. I didn't realize how inconvenient this is (when using additional rollers). I have never used the molder. Maybe someday I will, that would be fun. For planing only, I would look at the new 16 inch 3 hp Jet planer. I wish they would have had it a year ago, but I am very satisfied with what I have too.

4-0 out of 5 stars JPM-13CS is a good deal, but the options will get you.
JPM-13CS

I purchased my JPM-13CS in October of 2000. I promptly wired it for 220v. It is still going strong. I have done several hundred feet of lumber (birch, brown maple, basswood, pine, hackberry, oak) with it so far and I am still on the original blades. It does a nice, smooth job, but max planing speed is only 20 feet per minute. I seldom get snipe, and in 3 years of use, I haven't figured out exactly why some boards do, and some don't. Narrow boards (about 4 inch or less) seem to do it more so than wide boards.
I purchased a molding set for tongue and groove, and made a few hundred feet of basswood paneling. I strongly discourage anyone from going this route to make paneling. It is a slow, tedious process, and the available T&G set does not make the V chamfer groove, so an extra step through the router to make the chamfer was needed. I learned my lesson and bought a router bit set that makes the tongue and grove with the v chamfer.
I tried using this planer without a dust collector. It got about 2 feet and jammed without the collector.
I also purchased the optional "Curved Molding" table for the planer. I have not used it yet, but the attachment is very expensive for what it is. (A sheet of 3/4" white Teflon or plastic with slotted holes, and some bearings and bolts)

5-0 out of 5 stars can't go wrong with this one
Very nice planer. Plenty of power even when wired 115, easy to adjust, compact footprint, very well built. Have not tried the molding head option yet, but I'm confident it'll be a darn nice feature to have. I'm very glad I did not mess around with a smaller, less powerful benchtop unit first.

5-0 out of 5 stars BEST ALL ROUND PERFORMER
IF YOU'VE EVER CONSIDERED GRETTING A HIGHER END PLANER, THIS IS IT.
THE PLANER-MOLDER IS PROBABLY THE BEST LOW PRICED, HIGH QUALITY ITEM I'VE EVER INVESTED IN. IT SETS UP EASILY, JUST FOLLOW THE DIRECTIONS AND PERFORMS SUPERBLY. THE OTHER MOLDER PLANERS I LOOKED AT WERE EITHER TOO HIGH PRICED OR INFERIOR IN QUALITY (SEARS)
JET HAS PUT A PRODUCT ON THE MARKET THAT THE AVERAGE WOODWORKER CAN AFFORD AND USE FOR A LIFETIME, YET IS STILL A VIABLE ALTERNATIVE FOR THE PROFESSIONAL WOODWORKER WITH A SMALLER SHOP. EASY TO USE AND SUPERIOR PERFORMANCE ARE THE BEST QUALITIES OF THIS MACHINE. WHILE IT'S COMPACT SIZE MAKES IT EASY TO STORE.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Great Machine for the Price
I purchased this machine as an upgrade in my shop from a bench type planer. Initially, I thought I would like to buy a larger planer, but have found the thirteen inch capacity to be more than sufficient for my needs. The machine planes efficiently, and thickness settings are accurate upon initial calibration. Changing thickness is easily accomplished without the effort required for many smaller planers. The machine is sufficiently heavy to support large boards during planing, and the built in retractable wheels are wonderful, allowing easy relocation of the machine in the shop and good stability for planing while they are in the raised position. The infeed and outfeed roller supports are easily adjusted and well constructed. When properly set up they virtually eliminate snipe. When coupled with a dust collection system, the built in dust hood removes virtually all the chips. I am impressed! This is an exceptional machine for the price! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Good tool, excellent results
My JPM-13 is about a year old, and is being used to restore an old house. I use 5/4 and 8/4 fir and 5/4 maple exclusively. I make the door/window trim (1 1/8 thick x 5 in wide) and have custom knives made. This is not a professional machine, but gives GREAT results on the maple molding, with no sanding needed! I would recommend it to anyone that would use it as a hobby machine.

1-0 out of 5 stars ACE
I haven't used mine to cut molding yet, but the machine is under powered for rough cut lumber. If you just have a board or two to thickness plane it is functional, but for big jobs forget it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great machine
I've had my JPM 13 for over a year and haven't a single complaint. It's a workhorse that does a fine job of both planing and molding. It's way better than those flimsy, 12 1/2-inch portable planers. I've run a few hundred board feet of curly maple and red and white oak through it, and it does a great job.

3-0 out of 5 stars Great for moldings, modest for planing
I've had mine for about a year and a half now. The reason I bought it was to match original moldings in my house restoration project and the RBI systems were out of my price range. It is a bit time consuming to switch between planing and molding, but after getting the routine down it is getting quicker and more accurate. There were some burrs on the gears that change the speed, but after cleaning them up has made the job a lot quicker. Once the machine is set for planing or molding, it does a really nice job. You definitely need a dust collector hooked up and the outfeed roller set is a big help in reducing snipe. Overall, it is very capable of meeting a hobbiest level woodworking, but the planing cut isn't that aggressive to do a big stack of wood all at once. If some one is considering molding making as well as occasional planing, it is a nice machine to meet those needs.

1-0 out of 5 stars problem with gear
I've owned one for 6 months and have only been able to use it a half dozen times, since one gear broke on me twice and the first repair job took seven weeks, due to Jet not shipping a part to the shop. It won't stand up to demanding jobs and support has been less than satisfying. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great beam planer
I have used this planer to trim down pressure treated rafters to match older beams when doing roof repairs after Hurricanes. The unit is heavy but very easily controlled. Plenty of power and precise adjustment make this a great tool when you need the extra width but can't use a stationary planer!

5-0 out of 5 stars Big Hand Planer For Big Jobs
This was expensive, but it really does the job. It was a lot bigger than I imagined, and is heavy too, but is easy to control and the depth adjustment is very presice. I use it to plane down wide table tops, made of boards that is glued together. It works great. The trick is to take very small bites with each cut. Then you can just move the planer back and forth leaving it rest on the wood. If you try to lift it up after each cut you'll wear out your arms. I go cross-grain first to take out the warp and width differences, then with the grain for the final finish. The results are very good -- hardly any sanding is needed. I ordered an additional set of blades for $31 from a local dealer since they weren't availalbe from Amazon. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Jet 16" Woodworking Planner or Belt Burner?
I have been running the Jet 16" planer for just two days and shredded six V-belts.

The machine came out of the box well tuned and solid. The manual was very detailed and well written except for an error in the V-belt tension adjustment section. Assembly was easy, although I could have used a 240 V plug at the end of the power cord.

My problems with the machine came when I started feeding in my rough cut Douglas Fir lumber. I have a large supply of wide stock (1x15 inches). A few hours into running my lumber I started to experience stalls and a lack of power. Looking over the machine showed a plume of fine black dust coming from the V-belt housing. The three belts were badly worn.

The motor is mounted on top of the blade and roller assembly. The only means of adjusting the belt tension is to move the heavy motor up and try to tighten the bolts, a two man operation. The bolts are easy to reach but dificult to accurateley adjust. There is no self adjustment and a large margin of error epecially as the belts heat up.

The next day after installing new belts and a call to Jet's tech support number I tried to get to work again. (The manual has an error in describing how to tighten the V-belts.) Sadly, the second days results were the same as the first with less that three hours of machine use the V-belts were shredded.

So far Jet has not been able to offer fix other than sanding down the cast belt drive wheels. Perhaps the wide stock is to much for machine? This is a new model to the market so I can't be sure if the issue is with my machine or the design.

However, I can't wait to find out, I will return the 16" Jet and look for a planer with a better drive system.

5-0 out of 5 stars great planer
I just got my new jet 16' planer and as in the previous review set up was somewhat time consuming, and the machine is very heavy. I have only run a few pieces of pine and maple stock through it with mixed results. My initial opinion is that this is tool that will take more fine tuning then I normally would have to do and more experience in order to get the results I expect. On the plus side this planer will really hog some lumber. I tested the power of the planer by running a 9 inch wide piece of hard maple (the widest I had on hand) and the planer never hesitated. The height adjustment is clear and easy to read and adjustment is quick and easy. One more feature that I am impressed with is the four handles that slid into the base. These handles were helpful when assembling the planer and later on when moving it around my shop. The mobile base is a must with the size limitation I have in my shop

4-0 out of 5 stars professional planer, hobbyist price
First off, this is a GREAT planer. Specific things:

It comes with a 4" dust hood that works well, as long as your dust collector is off the left side of the machine. Reversible, or even rear-exit, would have been nicer.

Second, this thing takes forever to assemble. I spent about 12 hours putting it together. Part of this is because it is incredibly heavy. If you have an engine hoist, forklift, or Neanderthal available, you'll be fine. Otherwise, I wouldn't recommend trying to lift it with two people.. it really needs four.

I ended up removing the motor to lighten it up a little. That helped, but added a 3-4 hours to the assembly process.

Third, delivery was a little sketchy. I couldn't get it delivered for free without a liftgate. If you've got a loading dock, consider yourself lucky.

Fourth, why not include a power plug? It comes with a ~5 ft cord, no plug. Delta's Unisaw is twice the price, but it comes with a long enough cord and plug.

Random thoughts:

The stand is sturdy enough. I'm sure some people would prefer an enclosed stand, but it isn't currently available.

The infeed and outfeed rollers are very sturdy, and are adjustable for up/down and the angle of feed. This is helpful in case they are warped for some reason.

Conclusion- great planer, the assembly process should be simplified, and it is HEAVY! The bill of lading said 573 pounds; Amazon says 396 pounds. It's probably somewhere between the two. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Well worth the money
This is a solid addition to your Hitachi P12RA planer. It can be installed and removed in seconds, and connects to a standard 4" dust collector hose, without the need for adapters. The pictures you may see online or in catalogs don't do this product justice. It is fairly heavy guage steel and about as perfectly formed as it gets. The most important feature is that it works extremely well. It's worth every penny!

5-0 out of 5 stars You need this!!
If your in the market for a planer - you should know that they produce MOUNTAINS of shavings in no time. Using this well made, all steel dust hood will help keep your shop a little more under control and will certainly help keep your breathing air a little healthier too. (Do I need to mention that you need to hook it up to a dust collector or a shop vac... it does nothing by itslef...) ... Read more
