3-0 out of 5 stars Great tiller - with proper understanding
A note of caution on the tiller: it has two components which I've discovered I don't like. The first is a plastic sprocket gear that transfers power from the motor to the driveline and tines. Guess what happens when the little Garden Wizard gets tangled up in a tree root... yes, it completely strips the teeth out of the plastic gear. (Here you can correctly assume it's very cheap to mold a plastic gear instead of machine a metal one.) Second, the thing that's supposed to help eliminate the gear stripping problem is that Remington has a built-in circuit breaker right on the trigger housing. "How convenient", one might think at first, except that the breaker is made in Indonesia under questionable quality control and that the breaker is only rated at 7 amps. The tiller has a 12 amp motor. Why bother advertising that it has such a great feature like a 12 amp motor when the ciruit breaker shuts it off at less than a 60% load?

If you plan to use this product in already tilled and established planting beds, I would say that it's not a bad machine and you'll probably never have a problem with it. If you are trying to break established sod - be forewarned that tree roots or rocks will most likely cause you an instant breakdown.

5-0 out of 5 stars It sure beats doing it by hand!
I've wanted a garden tiller for years but didn't want to get into storing gas etc. (my lawnmower is electric). I saw this and was sold. It's pretty light so it bounces off hard soil but it's easy to move around the yard. I haven't used the wheels because the handle is so convenient. Using it is like reeling in a large fish. You let it till forward, then pull it back and run over the same area until you reach the desired depth. Tilt left or right to change direction. Removing the tines to remove weeds or clean is easy with the cotter pins. I did break a tine on some stony soil. Oh well. I'd buy it again if I had to do it over.

4-0 out of 5 stars My first Garden Tiller
I am a garden enthusiast; The big-noisy gas-tiller my neighbor uses kinda scared me off. I've been trying to make a vegetable garden in a less used area of my yard. I discovered the soil to be too hard and clayey and wet. Soil conditions are a gardner's nightmare ! I've been looking for an electric tiller for some years. I found this one in home depot display, when I asked, there was no stock available that day. Then I went back to get it couple of days later, to my amazement I found there was only ONE left !

It has been useful in tilling, easy to handle, I like the easy stop/start mechanism - as with all electric tools, instead of having to leave the engine on all the time. This makes less noise and is smoke-free !

I guess the tilling depth is about 8 inches - this is NOT specified in the manual.

Anyways, of all choices available, this one is good for its price. ... Read more

Amazon.com Review

The Tuffy is the tiller to choose when planting a smaller-scale backyard garden or vegetable patch (up to 750 square feet). Its four-horsepower Briggs and Stratton engine provides plenty of power for even tough groundbreaking tasks, all without sacrificing light weight or maneuverability. Counter-rotating tines means the wheels and tires work against one another, digging hard into firm, compacted ground to turn it into workable garden soil. With single-handed operation and just one forward speed, running the Tuffy couldn’t be easier--and the large, ten-inch pneumatic ag tires can handle almost any terrain with ease. This unit fits easily between garden rows for season-long cultivating and weeding. It tills to a width of 14 inches and adjustable depths up to 6 inches; the tines are 10 inches in diameter. The handle can be modified to several different heights for improved user comfort. The cast-iron gear-driven transmission has a limited lifetime warranty. --Mary Park ... Read more

Fear not: Your Trimmer Plus engine will have no trouble powering this add-on. Just click it onto the shaft and let the heat-treated, 8-inch steel tines do the work in the garden. The eight-spoke design bites into even the hardest-packed dirt and churns it up. We think women especially will love this attachment, because standard garden cultivators are impossibly heavy, a bear to start, and ridiculously difficult to control. It’s lighter, smaller and much easier to maneuver, but just as powerful, and the results are even better. When you’re done, detach the cultivator head with a click, hang it on the wall, and move on the next project. Superb product.--Kris Jensen-Van Heste ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Hidden Treasure
Our neighbor worked our garden with a disc and field cultivator, but we still needed to work in our compost. I stopped at the hardware store and bought the tiller attachment. I had a 31cc 2 cycle trimmer that I bought 3 years ago and had never used. I took it out of the box and attached my tiller. It started on the 3rd pull. The tiller tore through our soil with no problem. It mixed in our composte with ease. I then used it to tear right through our grass around some trees I planted. It took time, but eventually got through the sod with little effort.
I was pleasantly surprised. Now, how can I get that wheel frame from the old all-in-1 model...

5-0 out of 5 stars Works with the electric trimmer too
I own the electric Ryobi TrimmerPlus 132r and wanted to go with all non-gas for the power tools in my small yard. I planted a vegetable garden two years ago and rented a 5hp tiller to chew through the grass that was in place then. I decided to buy the cultivator attachment for the trimmer and have been extremely pleased.

I was concerned the electric motor would not be adequate for even minimal tasks but I was shocked (sorry) to find I could till through heavy dirt -- I even had to push on the back of the cultivator with my foot to get it to labor and eventually stall in the soil. I even tilled some moist but hard packed dirt without any trouble.

As other people have mentioned, the head on the unit was small enough to effectively turn over the dirt in a 30-inch wide planter.

If you're looking for a cultivator to handle a small garden, I would be surprised if you were disappointed by this product.

3-0 out of 5 stars Borrow one and test drive on YOUR soil first
When I first borrowed a friend's mini cultivator a few years ago, I was in heaven. Finally, something I could use to till my soil that was light enough for me to handle and easy enough for me to start, yet tough enough to really churn up the dirt. Unfortunately, when I got around to buying one of my own, I didn't buy the same brand. Instead, I bought a Ryobi. Since I also needed a weed eater, I figured that going with the attachment plan would save me money.

Although I like the trimmer very much, I'm not as impressed as the other reviewers with the cultivator attachment. It just doesn't feel very powerful. I attempted to use the Ryobi cultivator to work an established herb garden, and am about to give up and rent a more powerful cultivator. Perhaps my soil was too hard and compacted to work well with a mini cultivator. The Ryobi barely dug into the ground, turning up only the surface soil. I was extremely disappointed.

I do think that once I work up the soil with something stronger, the Ryobi cultivator will work well for maintenance tilling. I was impressed with how maneuverable the cultivator was. I could work around fairly densely planted herbs and perennials without destroying any desirable plants.

Based on my initial use, the blades seem quite durable and don't seem to get tangled with weeds very easily. Switching the attachments works well, too.

One design aspect that I expect to remain a drawback is the handle style. I found the handle bars on the other cultivator (unfortunately, the brand name escapes me--Stihl, I think) much easier to handle than the one-long-handle arrangement on the Ryobi.

For looser soil, the Ryobi should work fine for you, but unfortunately, my yard just isn't as cooperative as the other reviewers.

5-0 out of 5 stars New homeowner, old unkempt yard
I've never touched a lawnmower, weedeater, or any other garden tool up until 2 months ago when I bought my first home. The landscaping needs a complete overhaul, and thanks to this cultivator, I think I'll be able to do it myself. I've already redone the rock-hard old raised beds in the front of the house. Now if only I could buy an Add-On Handyperson attachment!

5-0 out of 5 stars Tough as nails, and worth every penny!
You can't hurt this thing. It tears through ANY soil, roots etc and does so as well as the big tillers that don't fit in a household garden. This is useful for small vegetable gardens, but the best use is refreshing the soil around shrubs in your foundation beds. Its litle head gets in tight spaces, and you can drop it straight down into a spot you couldn't wheel a big tiller into. It gets roots tangled around it, but clears easily. The tines are indestructible, as is all the rest. I'm glad I got the 4-cycle 875R trimmer, because this thing uses all the torque it puts out. A very good investment. Saves a whale of a lot of storage in the garage, too!!! ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars always a drawback
Purchased this unit yesterday and put it together and had it fueled and running in garden in 30 minutes . It will fine chop the hardest NC clay and make soft fluff in no time. I then tried the weeder by reversing the blades. Again, fine chopped all the rock hard clay. I tried the edger and it worked fine as well.
Downside: When I tried tilling in an area that had a few small extended surface roots, it caused the handle to bend sidewards. Now I have a tiller with a bent handle to it. The cutting blades work great, but the rest of the machine needs to be beefed up a bit to handle the light weight machine. It bounces all over and is hard to control until you get some of the dirt loose enough for the machine to grab onto. Mantis has just emailed me and said they would be happy to replace the handlebars. Service from Mantis seems to be good also. This is a great little helper. Just be careful as it is a bit light duty in the frame and handlebars.
The motor and blades deserve 10 stars but again the light duty frame and handlebars keep it to only 3 stars. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Murray Mini Tiller
This is a great working little tiller. Bought it a few days ago and have already run two tanks of fuel with no problems. It is a little workhorse. 1-0 out of 5 stars Super Bronco? It Should Be "Bucking" Bronco!!!
My wife wanted a tiller for Christmas this past year, so after some research I got this one for her. At the time it seemed the best overall choice, within our budget (well...sort of, but did I mention she is my wife?) and I was going on the Troy-Bilt name/reputation.Was I ever wrong...

First the good. This is not my tradition but what the heck.Besides, it's a short list:

1. The B&S 6.0 HP engine is a dream to start and has power to burn.It also seems to be pretty easy on gas.

Now the bad (See, I told you it was a short list):

1. On last years model (this one) the tines turn in the SAME direction as the driven wheels, and at TWICE THE SPEED.Can you guess what happens when you run into some tough soil or rocks? That's right. The tines dig in, the front lifts up and the drive wheels lose traction. If you've ever wondered how an Astronaut feels during a launch, I can tell you from experience.
This thing is DANGEROUS for all but the most mighty and skilled!!!In the first half hour I managed to till about 25 sq.ft. down only about an inch and completely exhaust myself in the process. And my wife is supposed to use this thing???? "I don't think so, Tim."

2. There is no neutral in the transmission. In fact, there IS only one gear in the transmission."Power reverse" is accomplished though a belt and pulley system that fools the transmission into thinking it's going forward. To put the machine in "neutral" you must remove a hitch pin at each of the wheels, tilt the machine up and shove the wheel inward on the axle, then reinstall the hitch pin.And on both sides. If you have a large yard, as we do, and if you are storing this machine in a tight little shed this is very inconvenient.I would drive it to where I need to go with it except that it's much faster to walk it there. It only goes about 1/4 MPH at full bore.

3. The bail for engaging the tines and drive system is very hard to reach and control. It has to move too far to engage the drive and is not controllable due to it's angle once drawn up to the handle.Against the instructions, I loosened the cable as far back as I could get it just to get maximum slack and it's still uncomfortable, even for me and I have big hands (re: long fingers)!!

4. The starter cord is behind the front guard and though there is slack built into it, it can be hard to reach.

5.B&S should take some basic lessons from the Techumseh people.Put an oil fill tube and a REAL dip stick on your engines. How much could it add to the cost? Also, an extension for the oil drain would be a nice feature too so that draining the oil doesn't mean spilling it all over the machinery.

One thing I have noticed in the new Super Bronco, and it is w/o a doubt my biggest complaint here, is that they are using a counter-rotating tine drive. This should make the machine much better... and safer. If my wife could've only waited a few months....

I hope you find this review helpful, and Good Luck with your own dreams.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great little tiller
I have had mine for a year and love it. Our garden is about 40ft by 40ft and it tilled it up in about 45 minutes. I also have a retaining wall with beds built in it. The tiller is light enough (around 25lbs) that I can easily carry it with one hand and clime the wall to till up the beds.

On the negative, if you have rocky ground, it is probably not your best bet. The tines move at a high rate of speed but not a real lot of power to tear up sod of roots.
