1-0 out of 5 stars Hang on to your horses
We tried the super bronco after hearing the saleman's pitch. The machine itself sounds superior to others we checked out but the test is in the trying. It worked great in the ground that we had already tilled just a week before, it made the ground soft and almost fluffy. But my husband got a little close to the outer edge of the tilled ground and the maching took off at a full gallop taking him along for a ride. He almost got hurt. Since the tines rotate forward, as soon as you hit a little harder ground it goes full speed ahead and there's no holding back. And if your ground isn't perfectly soft it won't till, it just drives on top of the ground. We took it back, it's not for general tilling, only re-tilling, and even then it has to be really soft.

4-0 out of 5 stars It does the job.
After reading the negative, and one positive, reviews here, it was with trepidation that I bought one of these. I did a lot of research and I'm sure you can get a lot nicer, easier-to-use tiller--for a lot more money. My garden is small and I didn't want to pay too much. That may explain my determination to make this one work out. Well, it does work out. I'm really glad I read the reviews and had forewarning of the bucking phenomenon. (By the way, it bucked even when I wasn't digging down too deep. The ground was too clay-ey and the problem is that the wheels move at a nice pace but the tines are spinning like a bat out of ...., so if they're not slowed down by digging into something, the thing wants to run away. The tines had trouble digging into my clay soil from time to time. I believe the older models and the heavier ones like the 8 hp may work better. The company was bought by MTD, I heard.) It did a good job of tilling up the first inch or so of soil (which is all I wanted it to do--I don't till any deeper), so I am satisfied with my purchase. It's just too bad you have to live with the fear of the bucking, but to me it's worth it not to have to take the next step up in price, which is a big step. I have to say, I'm delighted to be able to read these reviews from real users on Amazon.

4-0 out of 5 stars Super Bronco
After reading the previous posts, I just had to respond...the gentlemen who said they hated...or disliked this machine are doing it all wrong...my dad had an 8 horse model and did the garden for 6 of his kids, and never had a problem...it bought one myself, and the problem they are having is they are tilling too deep...you can't bottom this machine out and expect it not to buck...take it slow...one notch on the tiller depth at a time...once you get the feel for it, it's fun...you can walk beside the tiller and not leave any footprints in the soil...until you get in there and start planting....dmg

5-0 out of 5 stars A Tilling Fool!!!
I have never owned or even tilled before. My plain was to get a tiller for a garden next year but I got the Super Bronco on sale and could not pass it up. I put in a flower garden for the wife yesterday. She wanted it between a tree and the driveway (I have a gravel driveway). The ground is extremely packed and full of roots. After reading all the instructions I put the Troy-Bilt to work.

Like I stated first I have never run a tiller before. I am 5'10" and 170lbs. It did "buck" when it hit a root but after a few passes I was able to remove it and continue tilling. I think the key to running this tiller is (like the manual states) to "keep a light -but secure- grip on the handlebar" and let the tiller do the work. When it does jump just let go of the bail and it will stop.

It was so easy. I may put in the garden this year.

1-0 out of 5 stars I would not buy this product again!
It is not often that I feel that I have made a complete mistake but this is one! I own an older Pony Model and thought it was great. Unfortunately the transmission broke and could not be repaired. So I purchased a Bronco. This model is dangerous to use! It runs on the tines and when and if it hits a root, rock, or other subsurface (even thick grass) it runs away on top of the ground. When it jumps you are suddenly pulled forward and cannot let go of the handle in time to stop the forward movement. When I upacked it and started to till my wife was standing nearby watching. The tiller hit something jumped forward and almost struck her. She happend to fall backwards instead of forward or the tiller would have run over her before I could get it stopped! I reread the instructions and tried again. I still cannot get it to till properly or safely. This tiller will run away and strick anything in its way. The safety bail is such that you cannot turn loose in time to safely stop the machine. In addition it will not till up soil that has not already been tilled before! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Spend the extra money for the counter-rotating tines
I purchased the Troy-Bilt Bronco and was really dissapointed. With front wheel drive and the tines rotating clock-wise, the tines would grab the soil and launch the tiller forward. It nearly got away from me several times in the first couple uses.

I took the Bronco back to Lowe's and ungraded to this model. It was like night and day. This model is excellent, and you really can walk beside the unit in untilled soil and hold on with one hand (even hard packed clay) as they describe in the manual.

I would highly recommend spending the extra money to get the counter-rotating tines, it makes a world of difference. Also, I looked at other models and I think the Troy-Bilt is made far better than anything else I looked at.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not happy with operation
Tines and tires work against each other and dirt and grass
ball up between tines and tires. I just purchased this machine
March 29,at Lowe's in Longview,Texas. I would like to return
the machine for a full refund. If you have a machine that the
tines and the tires go in same direction I would try that one.
I am not happy with this tiller. Please reply. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Niche Tool
I needed a small manuverable tiller to create/maintain some border gardens around my lawn. A few progressive passes blended up sod much faster than a Mantis. This is the right tool for creating smaller gardens and maintaining larger turned areas. At 130 lbs, recommmend weights for tough soils. I had best success first renting a Horse for my tough jobs, then buying the Tuffy to maintain broken ground and do smaller projects turning sod and ground with limited buried debris.

This machine fits a certain niche:
Excellent power for the price - much more than a $300 cultivator.
Light weight trades away instant deep digging for good manuverability and turning. Small engine runs fairly quietly and starts effortlessly. Its single-speed is perfect for tilling, but need to be patiet when transporting up hills too steep for free-wheeling.

More notes:
Its lightweight makes it more apt to try to run away if you cheat on the depth setting. Not for breaking rough debris filled ground - rent a Horse for that. Switching to/from free-wheel requires manual removal of cotter pins... not tedious, but not like the high-end Horse tranny.

About the reviewer:
I usually like to buy high-end (luv my 44" Troy Snowblower on my huge driveway). Since my gardens just aren't that big, an economic concession had to be made. That said, no regrets with the Tuffy. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Disappointed
Four years ago I purchased a Troy-bilt tiller/cultivator from Lowes' Home Improvement Center. The first spring I was very pleased with it's performance with the exception of a crimped fuel line upon purchase. Second year, starting was very difficult. Required excessive priming and the tines were sluggish in rotating. Third year required putting in the shop because tines would not rotate. Fourth year again, tines will not rotate. I am not disputing Troy-Bilt quality, but disappointed because I love to garden and had hoped this would resolve alot of physical labor for me. Instead my tiller has created more labor, expense in repairs and frustration. I feel Troy-Bilt products are one of the best, but feel I happened upon a lemon. While I don't expect to receive any response, I felt compelled to keep your organization informed on defected products.

4-0 out of 5 stars Easy to operate and assemble
My husband bought me this to get a garden ready for spring. He was tired of me complaining about my back from using a shovel. It came with oil, extra wheel and a edge trimmer. It was easy to assemble and start. The wheels adjust easly for the depth you what the tiller to go. It took me about 30 minutes to cultivate the area for my garden. Clean up was a breeze too. The blades are easy to take off and put back on. ... Read more
