Amazon.com Review

The prospect of a water leak is bad enough, but a sneaky water leak--the kind that goes undetected until the otherwise preventable damage is beyond the point of quick repair--is far worse. Sonin's wireless water alarm, with its transmitter range of up to 50 feet, will fix this problem by alerting you to leaks near your hot water heater, washing machine, dishwasher, sump pump, or other water-bearing unit. You can even use it when filling a tub or a swimming pool; when the mountable sensor detects water, the alarm goes off. It's easy to use, too: simply mount the remote sensor in the desired location, hang the transmitter within 6 feet, and place the receiver within your range of hearing. The unit comes with an AC adapter but can also be powered by batteries. In the event of a leak or overflow, the alarm will sound for up to three days (provided no one responds initially). The wireless water alarm also comes with a security code setting to avoid false triggering. --Rivers Janssen ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The best Houswarming Gift I ever received!!
Anyone who has ever had a flood in their home can appreciate the agony you feel when you do not notice it for days. Several years ago, that was me. My hot water heater went on me and I did not know until after everything in my home office was destroyed.

I was given a Sonin Wireless Water Alarm as a gift when I purchased my current home. Last month, I had another leak, but this time I was prepared. The alarm sounded and I was able to go downstairs to see the problem. I immediately turned off the water main and called a plumber. Whew! Saved by the bell... ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Warning System
After having our basement flood, we purchased this product. This product has done a good job of letting us know of any impending problems. It will not make the problem go away but is a great warning device. It is small and inconspicous. It works basically like a smoke detector but for water. The only requirement is that the device must come in contact with the offending water. We have placed ours in the sump pump pit on a ledge instead of outside the pit on the floor because by then it would be too late:)

3-0 out of 5 stars a useful product
I own a few Zircon 64003 Water Detectors and I'm glad I bought them. Plainly put they work and each are as loud as a smoke detector so if one goes off it could wake you. (if you had a flood during the night like I did).

A few things to note the alarm won't go off unless the sensor gets wet so positioning of the device is important. Put it where you expect water to pool or to flow or in the case of a sump pump or well put it inside so that you can get a warning before the water over flows. Also the device floats so you might want to anchor or tether it down.

For an unmonitored water detection system it works pretty well. $.. is a small price to pay for peace of mind. Think about how much damaged a small flood could cause if left unnoticed...

4-0 out of 5 stars Can be invaluable in preventing damage, and calming nerves.
When we bought our home, we had a short in a sump pump in a false wall in our basement. Therefore, we used this product to alert us when water, from heavy rain, would begin coming in. We used this product until we found the source of the problem and had it fixed. Another example was an 83-year-old paranoid stepmother who had rainwater seeping under her basement door onto her unfinished basement. Even though this trickle of water sloped directly to, and down a drain she obsessed about it. Therefore, we bought her a couple of these until we could build a "lip" and stop the "problem." It stopped the midnight phone calls. Amen! Now, with some fore thought we placed them next to her washer and stationary tub. As for the below poor review concerning humidity setting off the alarm in Wisconsin basements, his point is well taken considering the nearby Great lakes and the use of dehumidifiers in the times I spend up there.

5-0 out of 5 stars Effective and Inexpensive
I purchased three of these water alarms three years ago after I woke up with seven thousand dollars in damage when a washing machine hose sprang a leak in the middle of the night. I am now ordering five more, one to go under every sink in my house, after a sneaky leak under an unguarded sink cost me $600 in plumbing and cabinet repairs.

The detector could not be simpler in concept. There are two metal contacts approximately a quarter inch apart on the bottom of the unit. When water bridges the contacts the alarm sounds and sounds. You shut the alarm off by drying the contacts with a cloth. I have tested the unit by simply wiping a counter with a wet cloth and setting the unit on the wet table. There is only a thin film of water on the table, but the unit sounds the alarm. I have also found that the manufacturer's claim of a two-year life for a standard nine-volt alkaline battery is conservative.

Other uses: Everyone with an aquarium in the house needs one of these babies at the rear of the aquarium stand. I had one in place at my aquarium and it prevented some real damage when a filter developed a leak.

5-0 out of 5 stars saved us twice already
We've had several of these little tools for a couple of months in the house we just moved into. Already they've alerted us to a leaking washing machine hose and a dripping supply valve under a bathroom sink. Well worth the price! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The cheapest insurance you'll ever buy!
This device has saved me hundreds of dollars and countless hours of cleanup! My basement floods periodically. Before, we only found out when someone went downstarirs and stepped in water. Now, the alarm goes off when the problem starts (before it becomes a disaster) and we are able to stop the water and clean it up in a few minutes instead of days.

5-0 out of 5 stars Works great !
Place the contacts where they will contact rising water and the alarm can be heard all over the house.
Put it in the sump, very pleased.
The local hardware store wanted 45 bucks for their water sensor.
The cord is plenty long enough, it's just stuffed up into the battery compartment for shipping.

1-0 out of 5 stars Sonin 700 Water Alarm - failed in first month
I purchased the Sonin 700 last month. Before I started using the unit, I tested it and it correctly sounded the siren. This month I tested it again and the siren now emits a weak and useless clicking sound (even after replacing the battery). My take - beware the Sonin 700 is 'false security'.

1-0 out of 5 stars Good Idea - Awful quality!
We got one of these for the basement after our humidifier occasionally leaked all over the floor (about 6 months ago). I'd test it regularly and replaced the battery at least once. Recently, my wife called me at work to say the washer had leaked some water on the floor. When I asked her if the alarm went off (it was located very near the washer and on a downgrade from the washer toward the floor drain), she said it was wet but hadn't alarmed. Later, I replaced the battery and neither water nor the test button generated any alarm. Great idea, but useless if the mean time to failure is so much shorter than that for the devices whose failures you're trying to detect...

2-0 out of 5 stars Questionable quality alarm
I ordered two Sonin 00700 Water Alarms. After one month, one of the alarms siren no longer makes sound. The other one still works. I guess you get what you pay for. Cheap product, poor quality. ... Read more
