Very nice workstation!
I really like this bench. It takes up less room than my previous table and it's extremely sturdy. I tried standing on it just to see if it felt sturdy (this is NOT recommended, by the way). The specs say it holds 550lbs and i believe it. I have sawed wood with a hacksaw, drilled holes in wood, and made keys on this workbench (I'm a student locksmith, which is why I bought this item).

The bench has these posts that stand up high enough to rest boards and other flat items on it so that there's space between the item and the bench. This makes it good for drilling. The three table-top pieces can be used for clamping, but i have not used this feature yet. They are easily moved however, with the hand cranks on the front. My unit came mostly assembled, but the box had been opened so I'm not sure if that's normal or not. (I bought this from Lowe's, not Amazon, for $90.) I think this is best for people who don't need too big a table surface, but need the sturdiness of a larger workbench.

solid bench
I bought the Workmate WM425PS project center from a local home center (their price for the Workmate 425, which included a 25 ft. extension cord and multi-outlet power strip was $25 less than Amazon's). I was expecting to spend an hour assembling it but, surprisingly, it was almost completely assembled right out of the box. I only had to put on the plastic handles which took only a minute to install. The stand sets up easily and intuitively and is quite sturdy. For such a stable stand it is not heavy at all, and I could easily carry it from one end of my basement to the other. The owner's manual is almost useless. Illustrations and instructions for assembly and usage are very poor. If it had not come preassembled, figuring out how to put it together would have been difficult. Black & Decker's web site will be of no use for this. However, using the Workmate is fairly intuitive and not that hard to figure out. The Workmate will be a handy work bench for small tasks, and the clamping is acceptable for simple things like holding boards for sawing. The clamp is too flimsy to use for any serious clamping. The stand is solid enough that it could be used for most any portable bench tool like a miter saw, planer, etc.

Overall, I'm glad I purchased this product and will find it useful over time. I suggest that you price around before purchase. I was quite surprised to see that Amazon's price was substantially higher than the local home center.

Great portable workbench
This is not a quality cabinate makers work bench. But using this bench you could build one. I got one because I have no room to store a real bench. Besides I like being able to bring a bench to the job vs taking the work back to the garage/shop.

On mine the belt which drives both handles is plastic, but the clamps are steel screws. What this means is that when I start to tighten both handle turn until one starts to skip. That means its time to grasp both handles and tighten. When its skipping it means the plastic belt can't drive the steel screw tighter. Oh well.

It is heavy but on the other hand it holds the work firmly. I'd like a way to one hand open/set it up when lifting vs the two hands and foot I use now.

Anyway I agree after you buy a drill get this.

Great idea for small to medium projects
It's strong, sturdy and well-made. It will do just about anything, BUT don't try to use the vise to hold anything that doesn't run the length of the table (length of the vise).

This is what happens when I try to clamp something smaller, or if what you are clamping needs to overhand either the left or right side:

- I was clamping a 2 foot item to enable my saw to cut of the very edge
- opened up clamps, put in item, start cranking to close the clamps
- the clamp on the right side tightened, as expected, but the left side start "skipping"
- the left and right cranks are geared and use a nylon runner to attach the two together. Crank either one in either direction and they both crank.
- this works great when you're clamping something in the middle, or something very long, but in my case, the right side tightended and the left just clicked.
- no big deal I guess, but I was wondering when the nylon runner\belt would break. I stopped before that happened.

So, in summary, I love the table, and I love what it can do. I just feel like I might be limited with it's clamping ability.

Heavy Safety Hazard
I have had this workmate 425 for a year and a half. In that amount of time the center part has fallen out on somebody's foot
Three times.You have really tighten it down to prevent this from
happening. Also the short legs on the bottom have collapsed twice
causing it to fall on my foot. This needs to be enginered better.

Beautiful Bench
If you have enough room in your workshop, then you need a good worckbench. This is the one. It was easily assembled in about 20 minutes and was perfectly flat and true. I wouldn't call it a heavy-duty bench, but is is pretty heavy. I don't know how I got along without. I used to use the right side table of my table saw to assemble all my furniture, but that is no comparison to this. The clamps work well and the surface is excellent. Even glue doesn't stick to it. If you have an extra 6' of space in your workshop, give this bench a try. It is worth every penny of the price. The only downside i see is that it doesn't have a built-in tool tray on the work surface. Other than that, this bench is great.

Sjobergs Full-Size Jointer Workbench
Somewhat disappointed with the value and quality. Originally, the top was shipped without the leg set, but Amazon.com responded in a timely manner with the missing material.

The leg set was designed to work with several Sjoberg benches so they were not optimized in terms of fit, form, & function for the full size bench. I believe that this bench is somewhat "under built" in terms of mass and sturdiness considering the ... price. Both wood vices are not very robust.

In summary, very satisfied with Amazon.com's response in replacing missing parts, but not excited with the quality of the bench

Sjobergs SJ1600 Full-Size Jointer Workbench
I was completely disappointed with this workbench. First the packaging was completely inadequate. There were gouges in the top of the workbench. The metal for the vises was rusty and the apron that the vises used was cracked rendering the vises unoperable. Their were knots on the top of the workbench. While this might not be bad in itself the manufacturers chose to use the knotted wood for the bench dog holes. There is a knot directly adjacent to the bench dog hole. I don't know how this would hold up over time. I have returned the item without replacement.

Not What I Expected
I'm a weekend wood worker. My aim is to make high quality furniture out of fine hardwoods. Results show that I am not a good aim, but I enjoy practice and I am getting better. I was really dissapointed in the quality of this bench. In this day and age $350.00 does not get you much - but the Sjobergs SJ1600 is still way over priced at $350.00. Function is a bench's purpose in life - I don't believe this bench will funtion in the long run. I sent it back; here's why. The support legs are thin pine, knots everywhere - in the middle of a cross cut, or a tennon - and so green that it is still wet to the touch. The top is clear wood, I think Beech, but is poorly finished, feels like a thin coat of a water based lacquer was applied, it left a fuzzy surface that will absorb adhesives. The top is only about 1" thick. The 2-1/2" side skirt is butt joined to the end skirt, but the two don't actually meet - the skirt is not really structural and it does not strengthen the top. The vises inspired no confidence. When the bench is assembled, it not only feels cheap, but it looks cheap.

Good value
If you're not up to making your own bench, and the $900+ high-end Sjoberg and Ulmia benches are beyond your budget, this bench is an excellent choice. I'm using mine for musical instrument repair,so perhaps I'm not stressing it as much as some might, but I find it plenty sturdy for my needs. I can clamp down a rough-shaped bass voil neck and work at it with a rasp without the bench wobbling about. The top is flat, according to my straightedge. I'd prefer it if the bench were about 6" taller, but then I'm 6'2". (I'll prbably make a pair of risers from some short lenghths of 4x4 I have here.)

Assembly is quick. I gave the legs a quick coat of Waterlox to protect them, but it's not really needed. Waxing the top isn't a bad idea, particularly if you plan on doing any gluing on the bench. And it's a good idea to protect the hardboard shelf under the bench with wax or lacquer or oil, as spilled water could warp it.

My bench did arrive with a new nicks and scrapes that it suffered somewhere between the factory and my back porch, but Amazon immediately made an adjustment to the price that made me happy. ... Read more

A great tool!
This is one of the most useful tools that I have owned in my 20 yrs in the carpentry trade.Most of the woodworking that I do is on-site and the Workmate is indispensible.A quality product!

GOTTA HAVE ONE
My wife just sold my original workmate in a garage sale! This meant I needed to get a work horse fast! The work mate is the most convenient portable tool bench available. The newer models work well but don't have the excellent glue-lam tops that the original model had. Both the old and new models are easy to use, allow a single worker to hold difficult materials for cutting, sanding, mitering, and gluing. It is the next best thing to an extra set of hands. My first workmate lasted through 4 house remodels. I expect the new one to last through 4 more!

Great until I broke the worm gear follower
My father has had a workmate for years. It had provided about 5 years of faithful 'moderate' to 'light' duty service. It's a must for space starved garages or workshops, and is fantastic for clamping. One of its drawbacks is its unwieldy center of mass when it folded up and placed on its side. It has a tendency to want to tip over if bumped, and in a confined garage that can be a problem. Alas, about a month ago it fell over and broke the plastic worm gear follower. It is a shame that they selected a thermoset plastic for this part. Because of its lack of ductility when it hit the deck it shattered into a several pieces. At first pass for the designers to make a part of this complex geometry out of plastic was the obvious choice, however, a die casting of the same part would have been much better.(...)

B&D and Amazon - Great Combo
I have wanted one of these most of my adult life, especially when I needed it and didn't have anyone to help me. I always assumed (correctly) that it was more expensive. When I "stumbled" across the WM 225 at the Amazon price with FREE shipping on this fairly heavy object - it was a done deal. Mine arrived in perfect condition much faster than the Super-Saver option allowed for. Wood, PVC, hacksaw, circular saw, glue - I have found my WM to be a new best friend. My wife sees me carrying it between garage and basement and knows that I'm finally attacking my "honey-do" list. Wish I'd bought it years ago. Great for the money
I'm a cabinet shop owner and remodeler. We own several different power miter saws that we have the bench adapter fixture mounted to. I've looked at several of these types of units and found that though some may be an improvement, the prices were up there as well. I saw one out at the Anaheim Woodworking Fair that was pretty impressive but wasn't designed to fold up, throw in the back of you pickup and set up again in under 1 minute. The Stablemate is sturdy, easy to adjust the support heights over for one machine to the other and has a few good accessories you can buy seperately. In particular, the additional SM200 saw/bench rail adapters and SM650 tool shelf adapters are pretty important. The company wasn't too hard to find (IOWA Mancturing 1.800.882.4422 or Stablemateonline.com) after looking around the box for instructions for awhile. The Home Depot can even order the accessories for you. I really can't find any faults with this product considering there doesn't seem to be anything out there that can touch it in this price range.

Nice-Stable- Heavy Duty-Well Made-Assembly Instructions ??
When I first hear the UPS truck pull up outside, I looked out the window to see the female UPS driver really struggling with the rather small carton this item arrived in. Well she was not the only one struggling; when I picked up the carton I thought, "This thing is really heavy". But after I put it together for some reason it did not seam nearly as heavy as when it was in the carton. Anyway after I put the saw stand together I have to say, it's very stable,very well made, easy to move around, and very heavy duty. The only problem I had is that the assembly instructions were not the easiest to follow. All in all I think the item is just as advertised and a good value, I'm happy I purchased it. So if your looking for a compact and mobile miter saw stand that can handle heavy-duty construction use this is the one.

heavy weight, much assembly required
This stand does what it's supposed to do- hold your miter saw and your material so you can focus on making cuts. These things it does well. With four adjustable height material supports instead of two, it is easy to keep material level while you cut. The material stop is great and the flip up fence handy. It is very heavy duty, which leads me to my problem- it is very heavy. I bought this saw for portability- it has wheels and looks like the Stablemate plus100, which my friend owns and is quite manageable. This stand when folded is fairly awkward to move and load, and with a saw mounted a real hassle by yourself. It is even a bit heavy to roll, and the little casters are very light duty. They will roll on a smooth surface, but any type of terrain will overwhelm them, including rolling over an extension cord. Also, there is an almost ridiculous amount of assembly required. I don't care how good you are with nuts and bolts and reading directions, putting this stand together will keep you busy for hours. It is non intuitive and labor intensive. This stand is reasonably priced, solidly constructed, and includes some nice features. However, if portability is your main concern, I would advise you to keep looking. If I was buying again, I would buy a lightweight and quickly folded saw stand, and buy and mount casters myself.

I Luv it.
I'm a simple homeowner who enjoys working around the house. To this end, I try to collect quality tools that I feel will last. I've been researching miter saws and stands for a few months. After kicking the wheels and reading reviews, this was the winning stand for me. Yes, its heavy, but thats what makes it stable. Other tables could be wiggled and jiggled ; this thing sits like a rock. If there's a nuclear blast, two things will survive..the StableMate and the ninja mouse in my garage. My 10" Sliding Makita LS1013 sits securely on the two 18" rails, attached by 1/4" by 2 1/4" carriage bolts (supplied). With the saw on top, that leaves about 5/8" at each end of the rail. I'm impressed with the way the rails lock to the stand. There are two triangle brackets on the bottom of each rail. The brackets are about 3/4" wide. A screw in each rail (cranked from the front of the stand) pulls the triangular brackets against the stand frame at the front and rear making flush and square contact with the frame; Other stands had a simple screw bolt that came down at a single point against the frame...inadequate in my view. The four 12" riser supports do not turn, but thats fine with me; I'll be cutting light stock that will slide over them easily. The supports easily adjusted vertically to the level of the Makita table top (41 1/2" from ground level) with another inch to spare if I needed it. As advertised, when the arms are extended, the distance between the farthest supports is 106". The 3" wheels are hard plastic and do function. The stand rests on the legs; you have to tilt one end up to use the wheels. The legs fold up into the body, but I envision leaving it set up in the basement. I bought the beast at a local tool dealer. It was double boxed and in excellent condition. All the pieces were inside. The directions are adequate if you're patient. It took me a few hours to assemble in the kitchen with a socket wrench and screwdriver ... In all, I'm very satisfied...

A good product but a couple drawbacks
I am very satisfied with the quality of this miter stand. It is heavy enough to be stable yet offers portability. I think this is an excellent product for the price. However, a couple drawbacks:

* It is not painted so the raw metal is susceptible to corrosion. It comes coated by some sort of oil or wax which I'm sure will wipe off over time so keeping the stand rust free will require ongoing diligence and effort.

* The instructions for assembly are really poor. It took me about four and a half hours. It's totally worth it in the end but you need patience and a long afternoon. ... Read more

Sound Investment
I've owned this bench for about 10 years now. It has seen many projects and has always done a more than adequate job. I have had to rework the cupboard over the years - stiffening the bottom and reinforcing the shelves. I have also customized mine adding pegs to hang clamps and saws and adding two stationary rollers mounted vertically at one end to facilitate moving it. I also recommend regularly cleaning and waxing the clamp guides, jack screws and drawer slides to keep it operating smoothly. All in all a good investment.

Particle Board?
This was a present so I can't complain too much. I don't want to hurt the givers feelings.

Man! All I can say is Sjobergs, lose the Particle Board! I'd pay whatever it takes to get at least plywood. I'm going to customize and build my own plywood drawer bottoms, leg supports and table back. No more Sjobergs for me!

Surprised by Construction
Did not expect so much MDF in a Swedish workbench and was a little disappointed by the how the drawers were assembled. The red edging in the photos (mine were grey) are actually plastic clips that hold the drawers together. Concerned about how well these construction methods will hold up. Figured out from another review not to assemble bench until this unit arrived (they shipped separately), would have to agree as this replaces some parts.

Great Product For The Price
I bought the SJ1200 with the cabinet accessory. It took about 3 hours to assemble and every piece fit perfectly. I added 4-2in. casters so I can move it around easily. Great for the home workshop. It took me about 45 minutes to figure out how things go together, after that it was a snap. The drawers were very easy to assemble much to my suprise and satisfaction. The assembly instructions consisted of 3 sets of drawings and parts list. The drawings were a little bit confusing and some written instructions would really help but if you study them closely they will get the job done. The quality is excellent and the price was about 1/3 less than other comparable units I looked at. The warranty covers any material defects for 10 years so I look foreward to many years of use.

Not as solid as one would have hoped
On my workbench the straight rails that form the frame for this kit have warped over the past two years, twisting about 10-15 degrees so that the sliding doors are no longer held in place. Also the drawers and sliding doors are rather flimsy. ... Read more

A well built door bench
I ordered this door bench without having a chance to see it in person, as it is a specialized product and few tool dealers carry it. While this made me a bit hesitant, as it is an expensive tool, I can say that immediately upon it's arrival I recognized that it is a very well built tool. The table sets up easily and is rock solid, there is no play whatsoever in the legs. All the surfaces that will touch the door are lined with a heavy, uncolored rubber bumper that will not leave skid marks on the door. These rubber bumpers are also riveted to the bench. The metal surface of the bench and legs are treated (painted?) in such a way that they are not smooth. This surface treatment allows the adjustable door grip and rests to hold firmly in place, and also prevents tools from sliding around when there is sawdust on the bench. All the features of this tool are well thought out, and well executed. I certainly recommend it to anyone who works with doors on a regular basis. ... Read more

light weight and designed to fail
I suppose my biggest problem with this workbench is that it is too light. I tried to do some light chisel work on it and it held the workpiece well, but the whole table moved.

The biggest nuisance problem with the table is the storage shelf. It is positioned just high enough to be a foot rest when you are seated on a stool. I know it was not designed to be a foot rest, but I found myself subconsciously placing my foot on the shelf anyway. The brackets that hold the shelf are connected by one bolt on each side, so the brackets have a tendency to turn. This causes the shelf to fall out along with whatever you might have on that shelf. It has happened to me several times. Finally I ended up putting brads through the legs and brackets to keep it from turning. The designer should of thought of this contingency.

Top Needs a Little Work
Bench is quite small, not just in length (as expected) but in height and depth as well. Very light weight as well, may move with heavy plane or scraper use. Many (but not all) dog holes were undersized. Had to enlarge them to a full 3/4" for my nice Veritas dogs to fit. Dislike the finish on the top and it is not quite flat. For the price, not sure I would bother with this bench without the drawers and cupboard set. Should work fine until I have time to build a better one.

I recently purchased the Sjobergs SJ1200 Compact Jointer Workbench and drawer kit (and at the bargain price of AU$150.00 brand new, who could resist) and found it a great little bench for my woodworking needs.

It does not take up much room, and can be moved from place to place by one person quite easily in two pieces, by removing the two bolts holding the benchtop down.

Although the bench was fully assembled, when purchased, I found as discussed in other reviews regarding the thickness of the benchtop, it does give the impression that it is far thicker than it actually is and take far more heavy items, until you get down and look at it and find it is a lot thinner in the middle.

The vice handles need to be upgraded to something a little more solid, may be plastic coated steel as they do with the dogs, as the timber ones could break easily and the knobs on the end do come off, even with glue.

I found there website http://www.sjobergs.se/ being in Danish of little help, they should consider putting it in english as well, due to the english speaking customer base they must have for such a great item.

A great workbench for a small space.
The craftsmanship is excellent. All the pieces fit perfectly and were very well designed. I almost want to bring it into the house because it looks better than some of our furniture.

I also purchased the Sjobergs SJ0042 Drawers and Cupboard Accessory Kit. This review is only about the workbench.

Assembly took about four hours, including the Drawer and Cupboard Accessory Kit. I expect it would have taken about half that time if I was just setting up the bench. The directions are an interesting story. There is only one sheet of paper with pictures - no text. This was a little disconcerting but I managed to figure it all out and so will you. How it fits together becomes obvious once you study it for a few minutes.

Don't buy this if you want to do really heavy duty projects like major auto repair. But I think it would meet the needs of most everyone else. I have limited space and may move in the future. This is a much better solution for me than building a permanent workbench in the garage.

Although not listed in the specification, it came with one Sjobergs ST98 Workbench Hold Fast. These are great. It holds your project very well and is easy to use. I will probably get another one. The bench dogs are also well made they have small ball-bearings which allow them to be removed and inserted with almost no force, but they hold a project very securely.

The mortise and tendon joints that hold the legs are very tight. The kit comes with a small tube of glue but does not say where to use it. I used glue only on the legs and vice handle. A little more instruction would have been helpful.

Some reviews I read for the full size bench said the top was too thin. The top is about 3 inches thick around the border, but thinner in the middle. I don't see that as a problem but some people might.

The two vices are very well made. The handle is a little smaller than I would like, but it still seems to tighten up quite well.

This is my first Sjobergs product. I would really like to work for them if all thieir products are this good.

I am surprised that Sjobergs does not seem to have a web site. This may be an issue if I ever need to replace something.

Shipping damage
Since this workbench top is not sold by Amazon, but by Grizzly, you have to pay for shipping. This particular item weighs about 70 lbs., 90 once they have it packaged for shipping. The cost to the user for shipping was $55. I don't mind paying for shipping, but the top was strapped to 2 pallets which were nailed end-to-end. Because the pallets move during shipment, some nails worked their way loose and punctured the cardboard protecting the top -- leaving nail gouges in the finished maple top. For $55, I expect the item to arrive in perfect shape. However, since it took so long to receive it and wanting to avoid any further delays to get a replacement, I've decided to repair and refinish it myself. If you order one of these tops, make sure to inspect it (remove it from the pallets and unwrap the cardboard) before the truck leaves.

UPDATE: Grizzly actually read this review, and offered me a $25 gift certificate for my trouble. I'm very impressed by their commitment to keeping the customer happy and righting a wrong. I will certainly consider Grizzly again based on this unsolicited gesture. ... Read more

LIFES' TRADE-OFFS
This bench symbolizes all the trade-offs we make in life. All the gripes and complaints of the smaller Sjoberg bench apply to this bench. It's small, light, the hardware is toyish, the top is thin. Having said all that, I am glad I purchased this. An average woodworker could make a bench that is much better if he had the tools and the time. The latter is my problem. I don't have the time. Making a bench would be on a long list of projects I am working on, so I would not have a bench for a couple of years. In short this bench is better than O.K.
