Amazon.com Review

For the price, Makita's 10-inch portable table saw is a solid choice for the job site. The 15 amp motor packs plenty of power, and with a 3-9/16-cut capacity, this saw will rip four-by material on a single pass. This saw also has an electric brake, so adjustments between cuts are both safer and quicker to make. The table's a good size, too: 27 by 22 inches. We also really like the saw's new cam-lock rip fence, which is much easier to adjust than double-locking designs. The bevel adjust has a pretty good rack-and-pinion design (metal, admittedly, would be better). All in all, this saw strikes a nice balance between weight (only 40 pounds) and vibration (minimal). Simply put, the Makita 2703 is a solid saw, better for the job site (quick, powerful, lightweight) than the home shop. For the shop, we'd recommend a saw with a more accurate fence. --Jon Groebner ... Read more

  • Powerful 15-amp motor handles any material
  • 27-by-22-inch table provides large support surface for work pieces

3-0 out of 5 stars depends what you want to do with it
This is not a bad saw...depending what you want to do with it. i struggled using it in my shop as my woodworking saw, for several reasons:1, what is the deal with the miter slot? it is undersized and basically useless. 2, the fence is lacking. it is ok for rough cutting, but hard(or impossible) to get any kind of accuracy out of. 3, i wish it had soft start like the 10" sliding compound miter. the saw practically jumps off the stand when you start it.
Now, if you want a lightweight, powerhouse to carry on the jobsite, this is a great choice. ripping 2X and plywood is what this saw is for. the table is too small for full sheets and lacks the capacity to rip 24". .... but man it hawgs through the 2X material.
i chose not to spend the money on a rosseau stand to increase the capacity. instead i just got a delta contractors for my shop and will use this makita for the job site. i thought about selling it, but it will be alot easier to haul the mak to the jobsite instead of my 300lb contractors saw.
so there you have it. if it meets your needs go with it. if you want a saw that will do a little of both, i recommend the porter cable.

3-0 out of 5 stars Light, powerful, imprecise, non-standard
Strong saw, and light, and with the Porta Table has a nice fence and will cut very wide. However, the arbor is too short for dado work as large as I'd like and the non-standard miter slots limit the amount of after market stuff you can use with the saw. I'm looking to sell mine and upgrade to a more versatile saw.

3-0 out of 5 stars If the fence were better . . .
This is a great saw in many ways. It's light, but sturdy. It's set up perfectly right out of the box, and offers easy adjustments to fine tune its performance. It's perfect to haul to jobsites, or just pull out of the garage on weekends. No other lightweight table saw is so solid, durable, and powerful.

So the fence really is a pity. It's easy to adjust and lock, but it doesn't square automatically. You have to realign it every time you reset it. And it doesn't even hold a setting, unless you clamp it in place with huge c-clamps. So it's not really suitable for any kind of fine work unless you replace the fence. Which isn't easy, because it's not a standard size, and you have to fabricate brackets. Which isn't really that difficult, but for about the same money, Ryobe makes a saw with a great fence. It's not as powerful or durable as the Makita, but since if I were doing it all again, I don't think I would have bought this saw.

1-0 out of 5 stars Terribly inaccurate waste of money
I have been using this saw for 2 years as an on site stair builder after my employer purchased this saw against my, and my coworkers, recomendations. This saw is cheaper than the DeWalt and the Bosch, and it shows. The miter gauge was used once and found to be useless. The fence is a joke, getting it square to the blade requires a measurement from both ends of the blade, keeping it square requires no pressure against the fence. For cuts that require accuracy, more often than not, I resort to clamping a guide board to the table to ensure that it will slide, or flex, halfway through the cut. If you are looking for quality and accuracy spend the extra dough and buy a DeWalt or Bosch, the time and aggravation saved is well worth the money spent.

2-0 out of 5 stars upsetting
Ive been a self employed for 10 years and been in construction since 1987, most of my work is custom trim, mantels and cabinets. my father bought a 8 1/4" makita saw in 1986 and i still use it today with a rousseau table,, i cant tell you how many LF has gone through that saw..well i thought it might be time for a new one , a bigger one . so i went with the makita 10" because of the deep 3 9/16" cut and the good luck a had with the last saw (as far as wear and tear, any makita table saw is useless to me with out the Roussseau table)in the past years.I also like the crank to lower and raise the blade, after years of hand turning the blade up and down this was really nice,,well when i got the saw i first took note to all the plastic parts that use to be metal, all the important parts , the gears, the crank, the lock. ive used the saw for four jobs now and the hand lock has all ready snaped off.. its very upsetting to see good long lasting tools get cheaper and cheaper..ive beaten the heck out of the last makita i had for the last 16 years, ive had this new one for 4 weeks and its already broken,,i do not recomend this saw to anyone that has to rely on it every day for work, it will not last..spend the money and buy a Dewalt... ... Amazon.com Review

While there are a number of rotary tools on the market made by a host of different manufacturers, the Dremel Moto Tool is the one they all strive to copy. Dremel's MultiPro variable-speed model is great for a huge range of projects, from home improvement tasks to hobbies and crafting. It has a continuously adjustable speed range from 5,000 to 35,000 rpm, which allows the user to effectively work with materials as soft as balsa wood and as hard as ceramics. The flexible shaft that comes with this model is great for working in tight spots many rotary tools can't touch. The kit also comes with an assortment of accessories and a handy carrying case. Others may copy it, but Dremel has been making rotary tools so long they've come close to perfecting the idea. --Brian Trinen ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars My Flexible friend !
Before I bought the corded Dremel Multi I used to use hand tools. The results were good but took time to produce. I then saw an advert on the television for the Dremel. I then went to a tool shop to see it and it's rivals. The only other competitor was the Black and Decker corded Wizard. The wizard lost out to the Dremel due to it's narrower range of operating speeds and it's greater size. The Dremel also had a far greater range of accessories to supplement it's use.

>I really appreciate the way that the Dremel can do what it does so quickly so well. It can carve letters, polish to a very high standard and grind metal as well as the capability to engrave metals as well. The fact that it does not take up a lot of room, especially when you consider the wide range of capabilities it has.

>To turn the Dremel on you slide the switch to one of the numbers on the scale, the further along you go the faster the shaft rotates. You set the speed according to the one recommended in the instruction manual which has pictures to guide you as well. You then apply the tool to the surface you are working on and gently do the polishing etc., but not too hard as it can damage the tool.

>I had my Dremel fitted with a optional chuck which makes bit changes faster and more convenient than the standard collet bits. You just loosen the chuck, put a bit in, re-tighten the chuck and select the right speed and you are ready to go. It also has a decent grip for easy and comfortable holding. It is quite simply a joy to use for craft. Special shafts can be fitted to the end as well, so there is little that has been missed out.

> The flexible shaft lets me work in places where the tool can't be inserted especially some places in my jeep! It's also easier to hold the flexible shaft when working on small workpieces like fishing lures etc.

4-0 out of 5 stars The Speed is the Key
This is a fantastic tool for a home owner or craft enthusiast. The range of small tasks that you can achieve with the Multipro is unbelievable and easy, even for an untrained person.

This kit includes a flexi-shaft, which helps you get into corners by extending the accessory bit using a long flexible shaft. You can buy the shaft separately if you already own the tool, but it's cheaper to get it with the kit if you're buying for the first time. The carrying case is attractive, and fits everything with room to spare.

Some of the things you can do with your Dremel tool include drilling holes to hang pictures, putting lot numbers on your house, engraving your initials on items you don't want stolen, sharpening scissors and lawn mower blades, cleaning jewellery or golf clubs, giving sticking doors and windows a quick repair, cleaning silverware or brass or even mag rims, installing your car stereo and adding auto accessories to dress your car, trimming nails that are sticking up, regrooving damaged screw heads, sanding in hard to reach places, and so on.

It is however a small tool, so you shouldn't expect it to sand a dining table like a belt sander, or cut out a large wood pattern like a scroll saw.

You need a tiny spanner to change accessories, but it's included in the kit, along with different mandrels to hold the bits securely. There is a wide range of accessories available for even more tasks, and a great additional purchase is the tile cutting attachment, which allows you to do bathroom tile repairs with a lot less mess and guess work.

The secret to the Dremel is the speed, with a range of varying speeds up to 35,000 rpm, which you control yourself. The instruction booklet is very detailed, and gives you lots of tips. Dremel also has an amazing website, with step by step how-to guides.

Every home should have a Dremel Multipro

3-0 out of 5 stars Works well for some things, doesn't do everything they say
My wife bought one of these for me as a gift. I had mentioned a couple of times it might be nice to have one... I don't know what came over me. The tool works great for details and doesn't work for much else. I have used it for a number of projects where I needed to file or grind something small... screws in a part that were 1/64th of an inch too long kind of thing. It works great for that, I don't have to apply much preassure to the item being ground. I tried using it to polish a pot (it's in the list of projects to do with your dremel) ahhhh... don't bother, threw polish compound everywhere because of the speed of the tool. Works far faster with a rag by hand. Or better yet... a big buffing wheel on a bench grinder. Works well for engraving too. Haven't tried it for much else. I think my wife will end up using it more for crafts than I will for the kind of stuff I do.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must have tool
I disagree with the negative reviews. A dremel is not a benchgrinter or an orbital polisher, etc, etc. It IS 3 pounds of power concentrated into a 2 oz bucket. If you use it for what it's meant for, it's great. In the fashion of any MultiTool, like a leatherman, it has multiple funtions in ONE tool. While a dedicated tool might do a better job in certain circumstances, it can only perform ONE funtion.

5-0 out of 5 stars This ol' Dremel done cut me a lot of stuff
This ol' Dremel is a mighty clever tool. I used it out in the woodshed to whittle me a slingshot out of a big ol' branch from a tree. Its also good to keep Pappy away when he sneaks up on me back in that ol' woodshed. Pappy sure do love his moonshine, and it makes him a bit frisky, I reckon.

Once I done shot me a possum back behind Ol' Man Stapleton's barn and that ol' Dremel came in mighty handy, let me tell ya. I got Ol' Mr. Possum's fur coat off of him lickety split. That sharp ol' Dremel took the head and legs off as fine as ya please. Threw Mr. Possum in the pot, me an' the kinfolk had some mighty fine vittles that night, let me tell ya.

This Dremel is also mighty useful for some doctorin' at home. Mama's prone to corns n' bunions, and we ain't have no money for the doctor. So I whipped out that ol' Dremel lickety-split and cut them bunions right off of Momma's foot! You shoulda heard her holla! But them nasty ol' bunions never came back, see Momma?

Only thing I don't like about this ol' Dremel is it sounds kinda like a pig squealin'. I reckon I don't mind, cause then people don't never know if I'm out back whittlin', or havin' me some fun with some lost campers or other city slickers! Yeee Haw! ... Read more

WorkTunes' hearing protectors offer a high level of hearing defense as well as let you replace the irritating noise with your favorite AM or FM radio station. 5-0 out of 5 stars Money Well Spent
I love my Worktunes hearing protectors! I use mine while woodworking and commercial mowing. If a radio station is static-filled I would rather listen to a loud motor. My headphones have delivered high quality sound for both music and talk stations. The hours fly by when I have them on. I highly recommend them.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great product, but not perfect
I originally became interested in these ear muffs for my wood shop after seeing nearly every landscaper in the world wearing them. Pros - Excellent noise protection, good sound, very comfortable, easy to use, great battery life, good construction. Cons - No markings on radio dial, reception could be a tad bit better.

As for the cons, the lack of markings actually isn't that big of a deal after a few minutes of use. You simply start at one end of the dial and finding your favorite stations becomes easy. I quickly developed a feel for how far to turn the dial to my favorite AM or FM stations. Another reviewer mentioned that these muffs don't receive FM stereo. They certainly do, but only if the station is strong enough and tuned in.

My other ear protection setup is a Sangean AM/FM/TV/Weather pocket radio or a scanner, and a $... set of professional grade David Clark earmuffs with speakers. Keeping in mind that this is about a $... setup, I still prefer the DC muffs for race tracks. However, the cord can get in the way while working in the shop or in the yard, and the radio needs to go somewhere. The Peltor does an excellent job, considering it's 1/3 of the price. As for blocking external noise, the Peltor muffs are as good as the David Clark units.

Overall this unit is comfortable enough for all-day use, I now wear them while mowing and snowblowing, as well as in the shop. I am happy enough with mine that I bought a pair for my father-in law. Over the six months I've had mine, they've been dropped, wet, frozen and heated, and they have held up well. We use non-radio equipped Peltor muffs where I work, they have proven to be very durable over the years.

5-0 out of 5 stars great tunes
I purchased a set of worktunes while my wife thought I was crazy. But after using them one time she has now decided we need another set for her. Only complaint it is tuning dial very touchy. The earmuffs work very good for hearing protection.

5-0 out of 5 stars Peltor Work Tunes 22 (not 09545)
I just recieved my PELTOR WORK TUNES 22 (not the 90545 model). The two models most likely have the same inside components. I selected the Tunes 22 because they are a little more compact. I do residential mowing with a 52" SCAG and these radio headphones work great. I was VERY skepticle before the purchase. After mowing, weed wacking and using a back-pack blower for several hours, I totally recommend this brand to anyone considering these. Fathers Day is right around the corner...A MUST for anyone who needs ear protection and enjoys music while you work!

5-0 out of 5 stars These are just great
If you are looking to protect your hearing, theses are for you.
I could hear people talking but could not hear the tractor. I tend to play my music loud but these would prevent that. The volume is fine for my needs. Sometime I cut my lawn for 3 to 4 hours( 2 acres) and I use to be tired when I was done. I found out it was the noise that was making me tired. All I can say is buy them NOW!!!! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars the seceret weapon
As a union journey man plumber I am always looking for the best product to increase my productivity. THis is the best Drill I have ever owned. Lightweight, Long Lasting and the Quality of being manufactured in Japan, not China like alot of its competitors. The battery technology and warranty are what really sold me. Having batteries go bad from overcharging or heat, the SoCal summers, is a big problem down here. THey have a warranty on the batteries for like 2000 charges. That is like 3 years, incredible. Also a problem is theft of tools and with the Panasonic I am the only person on the job with the tools so there is no confusion or misplacing of my tools. The only drawback is that Panasonic doesnt offer a full line of battery compatible cordless saws and lights yet. AS for this deal specifically where else can you get a top of the line Drill with 50$ in rebates. I paid the same for an 18v what most are paying for a 14.4v and mine is full of high technology. I completely reccomend this drill the the serious professional. ... Read more

Amazon.com Review

Are expensive router bits worth the cost? After testing Freud's 1/2-inch shank set, we think the answer is yes. The features found in these Freud bits--long-lasting micrograin carbide/titanium tips, tri-metal brazing, and an antikickback design--make them a better choice than less-expensive options. Each Freud bit is computer-balanced to run vibration- and chatter-free at speeds well in excess of the typical 22,000 rpm of most routers. These bits have a high shear angle that produces less tear-out and chatter marks, leaving a cross-grained cut that requires little or no sanding. Multiaxis grinding helps ensure the proper relief angle on cutting edges regardless of how the bit is oriented. The kit includes a variety of useful bits most frequently used by woodworkers and comes in a sturdy wooden case for maximum protection of the cutting edges. --Tim Block ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best on Amazon.com
This is an excellent starter set for any woodworker. Once you use 1/2" shank bits , you'll never want to buy a bit with a 1/4 inch shank again. They really do cut smoother. The carbide is a little harder than the average bit. It will stay sharp a little longer than many other carbide bits . I find them very good with most hardwoods. They chip a little faster than some if you hit a misplaced brad nail or other hard object. Some will just keep on going. Not a Freud. This shouldn't be a problem most of the time. Freud was ranked in the top 5 in a fine woodworking bit test. It was far ahead of all other brands available at Amazon.com though. Jesada was ranked last out of 17 brands. I would stick with the Freud set. They are very good and reasonably priced to boot.

5-0 out of 5 stars Versatility and quality
I am very pleased with the versatility and the quality of this set. It has allowed me to make a beautiful fireplace mantle out of solid maple. The cuts were clean with no tears, the bits I used stayed sharp throughout the routing. The bits in the set are varied enough to let you do almost any project you would like. I highly recommend this bit set to the novice woodworker or the experienced. It is great.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Quality
I have used this set of Freud bits in my shop for several years and I have not needed to have them sharpened yet. The cut is smooth and chatter free. These bits seem to cut through the hardest of wood effortlessly. I own many other brands of router bits, and I think that Freud has a far superior product. You may pay a little more for these bits than the cheaper bits from other manufacturers, but the money is well spent.

5-0 out of 5 stars Can't fault this set
A very fine set of bits, I'm pleased. The only glitch is the plastic form inside the box; it allowed a bit to get loose and rattle around (and chip) during shipping. Amazon set it right, but I wish Freud would find a way of really locking the bits in during shipping. Other than that, a wonderful starter set.

5-0 out of 5 stars Like butter
While I haven't routed any hardwood other than oak ply, these bits cruise through everything I've sent their way! The half inch shanks really stabalize them for super clean cuts. This set has a good selection of shapes to get you started if you don't have any or will upgrade some of your favorite shapes if you do. Worth the price.

Update: I've now used these to route plenty of harwood, including red oak and maple, these bits are still going strong! I've put a fair amount of use on them in the last year and haven't had a single problem with them. Keep them clean and dry and you won't either. ... Read more

Remember how cool we all thought that first Dremel was? We're reliving the feeling with this one: lighter, faster, smarter, better, and stronger. The main improvement over the last generation is the battery source: lithium-ion. There are so many reasons to applaud. Lithium holds its charge up to six times longer in storage than nickel-cadmium batteries, so it's ready when you are. Remember the disappointment when you were ready and your battery was low? That won't happen with this one. It's got a battery fuel gauge that tells you how much life is left before a recharge, so you won't be caught without your Dremel, and if you choose to keep it on its charger, you won't cause memory and shorten the charge capacity. It's small, it's light, it's comfortable and maneuverable; it's everything the corded models are, but without the cord. We love it.--Kris Jensen-Van Heste ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Lithium-Ion is SOO worth it!
I've always wanted a dremel and thought that the cord would be fine. But now I'm glad I went with the cordless. I use it in the back yard, around the house, at work. Not only that, Lithium-Ion technology is outstanding. Blows doors off those old nickel rechargable batteries.

Lithium-Ion is the same technology being used in the most current cell phones. It doesn't have memory problems like the old rechargables so you can charge it at any time, YOU DON'T HAVE TO WEAR THE BATTER DOWN BEFORE YOU CHARGE! Also, the charging time is a fraction of what it used to be. If I run out, I put the battery on the charge for less then an hour and I have enough juice to finish the job. Typically, full recharging only takes 3 hours.

I highly recommend that you get this dremel (8000-01 10.8 Volt Lithium-Ion) if it is your first time, second dremel, or a dremel enthusiast.

5-0 out of 5 stars Dremel Lithium Ion Rotary Tool-Model 800
Finally, a cordless rotary tool that holds it charge while being stored. Now I don't have to worry about charging my tool's batteries the night before I need it for a project. And the Lithium Ion batteries are environmentally safe--unlike Nickel Cadmium batteries.
This tool is surprisingly smooth, yet seems as powerful as my old standby corded Dremel Model 395. At 35,000 RPM it is the fastest cordless rotary tool I've seen on the market. I like the sleek, ergonomic design. Based upon my previous experience with Dremel tools, I expect this tool to be trouble free for a long time.

3-0 out of 5 stars Nice but underdesigned
I bought one of these at a local brick & mortar store for a project I'm working on. I am impressed with the power of the device and it is a really neat tool, but unfortunatley I've already had to return two of them for a defective speed control. While using it, the first one all of a sudden just jumped up to full speed and stayed there regardless of where the speed control was set. In other words, it was no longer variable. The second one did the same thing. Since I saw replacement brushes available for their tools (and therefore they must consider it somewhat user serviceable) I decided to open it up and see what it looked like inside. One of the transistors on the circuit board had gotten warm enough to melt the solder and shorted out two of the pins on the transistor. I'm on my third one now (just returned them at the store) and I first bought one about 2-1/2 weeks ago. Great tool but Dremel needs to work on their quality control.

5-0 out of 5 stars I love this Dremel !!!
Mine is utilized for robotics projects--it finds a lot of uses with metal. I also bought the press accessory with it. This little accessory helps me make straight cuts and drill holes.

I'm telling you, I use this thing constantly and it works like a champ! It is powerful enough for me to cut all my brass and aluminum with the precision of that of a doctor. For as handy as this tool is--I'd pay twice as much to get one if need be. I've had mine for 5 months too.

One HUGE word of advice. WEAR SAFETY GOGGLES! I know this may sound lame, but it saved my @ss!!! When cutting some tubing, my disk exploded at full RPM's and the shrapnel hit me in the goggles. (Of course I had my fat head over top of it while I was cutting) Just be careful. The tool is A+, but the little thing could be dangerous if you slack on the safety.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is a first look
I've been using Dremels for a long time and always wanted a decent cordless. With the advent of decent cordless power tools (the first one that I had that was actually useful for something was an 18 volt DeWalt drill that went right through stuff my corded drills wouldn't touch, but that's another story) I've been waiting for Dremel to come out with a good cordless.

I've been hesitant about the earlier cordless Dremels but this one looks like "it".

So far it's done everything I've asked it to do but I haven't asked it to do much--I got it specifically to deal with a piece of acrylic that my cordless Rotozip melted instead of cutting--I figured the adjustable speed on the Dremel would take care of that and was right.

Just an aside about stalling--if you're stalling a Dremel then it's time to take a good hard look at a Rotozip, which, if you've never played with one, is kind of a Dremel on steroids--Dremel has an equivalent, the "Advantage", but only the one model and not cordless.

The lack of a provision to charge the battery with the tool attached is just carrying through the current practice with cordless tools--it's assumed that one will have two batteries, one on the tool and one on charge if this is an issue. There's space in the case for a second battery.

A "gotcha" to be aware of with the lithium ion batteries, always store them charged--if they self-discharge below a certain point a protective circuit kicks in and they disable themselves--this is a safety issue--trying to recharge a lithium ion battery that is discharged below a certain point can result in an explosion (I'm not talking about a little spill--exploding lithium batteries in emergency-locator transmitters have brought down light aircraft).

Amazon.com Review

Black & Decker's Grass Hog offers the convenience of cordless power without the mess of fuel. Requiring virtually no tune-ups and no fussing with gasoline and oil mixtures, the Grass Hog gives you quiet, reliable, maintenance-free power at the flip of a switch. True, battery power doesn't measure up to the strength of a gas engine, but maybe you don't need all that power (and pollution) anyway.

This trimmer takes just a few minutes to put together, and its durable construction--backed by Black & Decker's two-year warranty--is immediately obvious. With a 12-inch cutting path--the largest of any battery-powered trimmer--the Grass Hog works quickly. It is limited to light-duty cutting of grass and foliage but can handle most homeowners' needs for weekend weed whacking. The straight-shaft design lets you easily reach under decks and stairs, and the adjustable handles offer a comfortable grip. The auto feed spool releases trimmer line as it's needed, with no tapping of the spool head required. The edger feature is easy to engage and does a decent job of cleaning up around paving stones and concrete, although it's not as powerful as gas and corded electric models when cutting extensive edges along walkways and driveways.

Weighing over 10 pounds, the Grass Hog may be a bit heavy for some users, but for small, light-duty jobs, most homeowners should find it to be quite manageable. As with all power equipment, trimmers must be handled with caution. Be sure to wear hand, eye, and foot protection when operating this serious piece of equipment. --Michelle McSweeney ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Very good; just a little heavy & runtime is short if edging
This does a good job of trimming and edging. I have used a corded Toro trimmer and I have to say that the cordless convenience more than makes up for the fact that this is quite a bit heavier than the corded models. Run time for trimming is about 30 minutes if not held on constantly. However, the run time when edging is very short, probably about 10-15 minutes. It does a good job edging, but it takes a little longer than a dedicated edger and does not cut quite as deeply or as narrow a swath. But the steel guide makes it fairly easy. I have found you will be pretty worn out because of its weight by the time the battery runs down anyway, so it's time for a break. In about an hour, it will charge back to about 1/4 capacity after being fully drained; 1/2 after about 2 hrs and maybe 2/3 after 3 hours. Then the charging slows down a bit (takes about 12 hrs to get close to capacity. After that, the green light comes on to let you know it is trickle charging the battery.
...

The assembly was straight-forward, just a few screws to attach the guard to the bottom. During operation, it is a little noisy, but I think it helps a bit if you get the screws on tightly enough to keep the guard from rattling. Overall, it can cut well and requires no bumping to release the string. When edging, I did notice that the edger does a better job once a new section of string is released. I think that is because it is a bit longer and can cut deeper into the dirt.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very convenient tool for suburban trimming.
I have owned my Grass Hog for over a year now...and still love it. It offers the best features of gas-powered and electric trimmers. First, no gas to buy, no oil to mix, no plugs to foul, no noise and vibration and no trying to get the engine started plus no need to fuss with dragging an electric cord around. The battery sits where a gas-powered engine would normally reside -- this balances the trimmer making it easier to use than traditional corded models. The auto-feed system works great and the string is easy to replace. The rotating head makes edging easy.

I have a 3/4 acre corner lot with a fence, a sidewalk around two sides and a great deal of stone edging around trees. I can easily trim the entire yard on one charge. When I hang up the trimmer, it recharges and remains charged until needed again...very cool.

There are a few places where this trimmer may not be well-suited. It does not have the power of high-end gas models. This limits its usefulness in heavy weeds and underbrush. It has plenty of power for the average suburban yard but trimming hay from around horse-farm fences would be about its upper limit. It also would not work for a lawn-care service as it has to recharge for several hours once the battery drains.

For the average suburban lawn, this is the way to go. Mine has never failed to please!

3-0 out of 5 stars It's been 4 years of good use
Four years have gone by and the motor died. The battery would last about 10 minutes and that's it. I plan on buying the new 18 volt model and will try the other person from Austin recommendation, charge indoors. This trimmer will not do an entire yard at once so if that is your mission look elsewhere. I plan to get the new one because it's emission free. The foul emissions from my borrowed gas trimmer is sickening. The construction design could definitely be better.

1-0 out of 5 stars It's going back to the store!
I need something that last more then 15 minutes. Black & Decker, you have let me down!

4-0 out of 5 stars 3rd year, still fine
This is an extremely convenient trimmer. Ours still runs about 40 min before needing a recharge, and it feeds perfectly. I refilled the string dispenser last year with no problem. It is a little difficult & awkward to get the battery pack off the handle. It is not really designed for female-sized hands. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Nice but not great
I've been replacing my bargain Sears tools with those of better quality. Couldn't be happier with my other assortment of PC tools (nailers, saws, and drill). The router comb is definately nice, but not nearly as big of a step as I expected over a $59 Sears router. Depth adjustment is definately a big improvement, but took a step back by not having a locking collet (need both wrenches) for bit changes.

Bought at a sales rep demo and got the dust collection base thrown in for free. It is better than nothing, but I wish I would have looked closer at the Dewalt set-up.

Bottom line, does the job, but falls a little short of my high expectations for PC tools.

3-0 out of 5 stars Could have been better thought out
I recently purchased this combo because I had a need for both an evs router and a plunge option. I have a Milwaukee 1-3/4 body grip router and the 3-1/2 hp evs that I use on a regular basis. Unfortunatly Milwaukee is not coming out with a plunge base for any of their routers so I went with the PC. The evs option is nice, as are both of the bases. Where this combo falls short is 1 Both bases are set up for template guides not the wide hole for most bits. That is an option. (C'mon PC! Wake up!! how difficult is is to supply both bases with a 2 base set?!?!?). 2 the guide that comes with it, although very smooth and easily adjustable also throws off the balance of the machine making it difficult to use on long runs as it makes the router side heavy as the handles are perpendicular to the guide as opposed parallel which would make it easier to control the guide as well as push the router through the stock.
3 the evs speed settings are somewhat vague.

Other than the above issues the tool is well constructed and the soft start is really nice. If PC corrected the above issues I would rate this tool at 5 stars.

5-0 out of 5 stars Still the industry standard for so many accessories, etc.
As a relative beginner, I looked long and hard at all of the models of routers out there and settled on further examining and evaluating three of them -- Porter Cable Combo Kit, Makita "D" Handle, and Bosch Combo Kit. Each had impressive reviews as well as definitive pros and cons. The deciding factor came down to the vast number of accessories already available for Porter Cable and also the fact that most manufacturers have paid silent homage to the PC brand by designing their respective products around the Porter Cable name -- table inserts, plates, bushings, guides, etc. Since I didn't want to buy a brand that would require a lot of shopping around for accessories or creative workshop design and fabrication to adapt and use, this Porter Cable combo kit gave me the very best of both worlds for my level of epertise (novice) and also the money I spent. It has heft and balance as well as a genuinely solid feel to it and in its first use, I felt extremely comfortable using it to router a Roman Ogee and chamfered edge on two different pieces of stock. The router experts may disagree with me and although I would defer to their individual experience and expertise, I believe that this model router will afford me the least expensive and most valuable method of learning this particular art all the while I'm having fun!

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Router--Greater Value!
I picked this up as a second router, and for the price and quality, it's tough to pass up. PC tools are built like tanks, and should last much longer than lesser brands which are within shot of the same price range. So far, this router has shown plenty of power and surprisingly good balance & stability considering the weight (it won't blow away). The features on both bases are built to last for the long run. Porter-Cable included the deluxe edge guide with this, and it is very nice. Things that could be better for this kit? Handles--ditch the hard plastic and thrown on a set of ergonomic, rubber-coated ones for better grip. Also, include the base for the wider, edge-routing bits with this kit--it's kind of tacky to have to make a 2nd trip to pickup a base which is so obviously needed & used--and spend $15 for it. The case should also be molded to hold the edge guide that's included--it was loose in the shipping box.
Overall, very satisfied with the router & results for the money ($160). ... Read more

Imagine the feel of 470 inch-pounds of torque in your hand. That's what this awesome drill/driver delivers in the lock-up position, powered by a 19.2-volt battery. Because of the two-speed gearbox, you've got drill speed ranges of 0 to 500 rpm and 0 to 1,500 rpm. Its 1/2-inch chuck is keyless, and the 20-position clutch takes care of drilling into all kinds of material. Porter-Cable's drills are among the best on the market; you'll never regret a PC purchase. But here's one more reason to go with this model if you're in the market for a cordless drill/driver: the interchangeable Grip-to-Fit handle inserts. Having grappled with tool handles that were too big to control, we think this system is a great idea. There are manly sized grips included, of course, but for the woman woodworker or cabinetmaker, welcome to a delight--small grips! This package also gets you two batteries, a charger, a bit, side handles, and a case. You just can't go wrong. --Kris Jensen-Van Heste ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Professional tool
Great tool for the pro, not for a hobbyist or casual user. Tool is heavy and has a great deal of torque. It could easily get away from an unsuspecting user.
For the professional, this is a really good and reliable tool that has all the power that would want. The batteries are rapid charging and are generally available from recharge before you wear out the previous battery.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Drill!!
I have two of these drills, one is a hammerdrill also. the older of the two is about 2 1/2 years old(not a GTF model) and is used every day. I'm still on the original batteries. Just the other day the chuck assembly pulled out of the drill while trying to drill a 1/2" hole with a long auger bit threw 2 6x6's. when i pulled up on the drill. the chuck and bit stayed in the 6x6's. this is the first time that's ever happened in 2 1/2 years. I took the drill apart and fixed it. seems a C clip came off inside which holds the chuck in the drill. I wouldn't recommend taking these drills apart, because it took like 3 hours to get back together. and now the drill only has low speed. but still works fine. i'm shopping for a new drill incase this one breaks again. the hammerdrill/driver PC drill is about a year old and still works fine. the batteries last a while and have been charged many many times. not a day goes by on my jobs where both of these drills aren't out working. always two batteries on charge. I'm a builder in NJ, not a DIY home owner, so these drills definitely get plenty of use.
I'm not sure if I'll replace the one that broke with the same exact drill. I'm willing to try another drill to see if they are any better. 2 1/2 years for a drill that gets used every single day, isn't bad at all. and I never had to replace the batteries! like I said, it still works, just no high gear(that was because I didn't reassemble the tool correctly) fixing it myself was still better than buying a new drill right away.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good tool -- Bad Battery
This is a great tool; smooth, not heavy, rugged case, good power. This does have plastic drive gears which eventually wear out but is fine the casual worker or light work. I spent 3 weekends driving 3/8 lags screws and stripped the gears. No problem getting a new drill. I have 2 other similar models but the batteries last about 2 hours with medium work load and may take 4 or more hours to cool off and take 2 hours to charge. My old model PC drill last 4 hours and charges in about 1 1/2 hours ... Read more
