Most of the time this saw is used like any other reciprocating saw - fully extended and straight. However, the one time that you need to cut something that is not in front of you and perfectly square to you, you will see where this tool shines. The head on this saw can be positioned in many angles and the blade literally spins 360 degrees. This adjustability does two things. First, it effectively makes the saw shorter, which was why it worked where no other could in my plumbing example. Second, the saw can be adjusted to literally fit the angle of the material that you are cutting, no matter where you are in relation to that material. Often, when you use a reciprocating saw in a remodel situation, you don't have the luxury of standing dead square in front of a level cutting surface. This saw gives you more control by allowing the blade to be adjusted so it is square to the cutting surface when the operator cannot get into that same position. Since, the head on this saw that holds the blades can be positioned at almost any angle relative to the trigger handle, this means that you can get the saw's shoe, into a position that allows the shoe to rest on some part of the project; thus improving control AND safety. For example, with this saw, you can cut fit the saw head (not the whole saw) between 2x4 studs on 16" centers. This allows you to make more precise, square cuts in existing walls (say that have sheet rock on one side that you do not want to disturb) for modifications to the framing. Reciprocating saws have always been good for remodel work, but this saw is amazing. This saw has a system for loading blades that is quick and secure. The saw is smooth running and the variable speed control is .... well.... smooth. You can make cuts with this saw that, until now, were done with handsaws, drills, chisels, brute force and circular saws held in dangerous positons. I have thought about writing this review since I bought this saw over a year ago and used it on my plumbing project. I have used it many times since and each time I think "I am going to write a review on this saw because people need to know that the extra money spent on this saw is well worth it for the added functionality." I used the saw AGAIN this weekend and I was AGAIN reminded how well designed and built this saw is. If you plan to use this saw for remodeling you will not be dissapointed.

Amazon.com Review We really like this tool's counterbalancing mechanism, which reduces some of the unavoidable vibration found in reciprocating saws. The difference you feel when operating this tool, compared to nonbalanced saws, is significant: the Super Sawzall is still extremely powerful, yet it has a smooth feel. As a result, of course, you can work longer with less fatigue than you can using other, unbalanced saws. Another significant feature is the clutch, which, by absorbing shock and impacts to the internal mechanics caused by sudden blade lockups (typically encountered during extreme use), minimizes time wasted tending to a damaged saw. Although this is a heavy tool, it does have an ergonomically designed rubber grip that provides a solid, comfortable hold. --Tim Block Features Reviews (39)
I was going to get the 10 amp Super Sawzall, but after reading toolpig's review and considering the advantages of orbital action, I bought this one. It was only $5 more. I will never be sorry! My first project was cutting up a bunch of rebar to use spiking railroad ties down. Over 100 cuts (with a Lenox blade) and I wasn't tired and neither was the saw. I slowed it down with the speed dial to keep from burning up my blade. I never realized how handy this one feature would be until I used it. You can get precicion control over top speed without having to finesse the trigger. Just set the max and pull it wide open - no more overspeed burns! Next I was cutting railroad ties with a 12" Lenox blade. I started out in the straight cutting mode and it was slow after the first inch. I switched to orbital action and the blade just about fell through the wood! I was making straight cuts and miters on 8" x 10" ties with no problem. I had used a chian saw in the past, but railroad ties always have a "suprise rock" right in the path of your cut. The recip blades are basically disposable, so you can save the chainsaw for less risky duty. This saw runs smooth and quiet, no user fatigue after hours of use. The adjustable shoe is real handy, another feature new to me after the Makita. If this tool lasts as well as it runs, you'll never need another recip saw. I don't see how they could come out with a better tool, unless it would run itself on voice command while you sat back and watched! Maybe next Millenium.
I've been using sawzall's for quite a while now and I have always admired Milwaukee Sawzalls for their dependability and durability. When I finally had to replace my old one and discovered that Milwaukee had introduced a new sawzall to their line, it was a simple choice for me. The added power and easy of use make this an idea choice if your building something new, tearing something down, or fabricating something for a job. I would highly recomend this product to anyone who wanted to purchase a sawzall.
Consider some of the features found on this model Milwaukee: 11 amps of power and it feels like more. This is one big, robust saw, period. Detachable cord. Only Milwaukee figured out the ways people use a reciprocating saw--constant, demanding ROUGH use. These saws are most typically used in demolition work. In this environment you run the saw relentlessly and go through some blades. When you want to change one, in a hurry, nothing on earth is handier than being able to simply unclick the power cord and do a blade change. Believe me, you wouldn't want to change a blade on this beast without it being unplugged. Orbital action. When you're rough cutting lumber, nothing assists you like an orbital action. This allows the blade to more aggressively cut through the material with less binding and less discomfort to the operator. Anti-vibration. I don't know the technical nuances of how Milwaukee cancels out the vibration, but this saw is the smoothest (from an operator's standpoint) saw I've ever used. Any recip saw can truly rattle your fillings when it binds, but fortunately this Milwaukee has anti-vibration and a clutch, that genuinely minimizes feedback to the operator. Easy blade change chuck. This has got to be the simplest blade change known to man. Rotate the collet about 1/4 turn and you're in business. NOTHING could be easier. Variable speed dial. What a nice touch! Instead of relying solely on trigger pressure for speed control, Milwaukee thoughtfully provides a speed dial. Set it to half and you can pull the trigger back all the way and run at half speed. Demo work doesn't usually involve feathering the trigger, so this is a godsend. Typical Milwaukee construction. Want to find out how good Milwaukee's reputation is in the building trades? Go to a jobsite. ANY jobsite. Residential, commercial, plumbing, electrical, it doesn't matter. First, stop by and ask any professional what they think of Milwaukee. Second, look for the RED tools (Milwaukee's trademark). Every jobsite has Milwaukee. The pros respect them because they don't break. I brought this tool home on a Sunday and had to cut up 15 pallets to downsize them for garbage disposal. If you've EVER had the fun task of cutting up pallets, you can appreciate that the wood is FULL of nails (everywhere) and it's genuinely very hard, dense wood. Has to be to support the loads that pallets carry. I chucked in a new Milwaukee blade and 30 minutes later there was over 10 pounds (yes I weighed it!!) of sawdust and a BUNCH of small boards left. Saying the Milwaukee cut the boards like a hot knife through butter, in my mind, does a disservice to the hot knife! I ran the saw until it became so hot I couldn't hold it anymore, which is being overly severe to any tool; I just wanted to see if Milwaukee's vaunted reputation was as deserved as people say. It is. The saw NEVER stopped running; I honestly believe I could have put on gloves and kept going, but did allow the saw to cool down and resumed cutting. If a nail was hit, it bucked a little and just went on through it. It's a beast, plain and simple. It's a very specific product, but one with a ton of uses. If you've never used a recip saw before, I would caution you to always make sure your item being cut is safely secured; a recip saw of this size has enough strength to easily move anything that is loosely held. Always be sure of what's under or behind the blade; if it's a concrete driveway or asphalt, you can damage the tool, but REALLY damage the driveway! Wear boots and safety goggles, this thing takes NO prisoners. And for heaven's sake, if you're demo'ing a wall, make absolutely certain that there are no live electrical wires present. This saw isn't for everyone; it's pricey for single, consumer use. But, if you want the very best made reciprocating saw made, look no further than the Milwaukee Super Sawzall. It's the class leader by a BIG margin.
In the past I've used Dewalt, Makita and PC reciprocating saws extensively and most others on the market and none of them have performed like this. I think the best part of this saw is the lack of vibration while cutting, it far outperfroms the others. That said, there are also easy blade changes (watch out they're hot if you've just been using them) the detachable cord (love those things, got a couple of other Milwaukee tools with that and it couldn't be better), adjustable shoe, orbital action, and speed control dial. I can't think of anything else they should put on the saw except for maybe someplace to rest a 12 ounce can of something cold. I recommend this without reservation over every other saw on the market today.
I have used other reciprocating saws in the past but none has impressed me as much as the Super Sawzall. I first used it to demolish a kitchen that I am remodeling. Wood, nails, formica and drain pipes never slowed the blade on the this Sawzall. I used a metal cutting blade for the drain pipes but everything else was cut with the blade that was recommended for nail embedded wood. Since then I have used the Sawzall for several other small projects around the house and it has performed flawlessly. I did purchase the Milwaukee 11-piece blade set but haven't opened it as the two included blades are still sharp and still effortlessly slice through everything that gets in front of them. Maybe this saw was overkill for my small home improvement projects but the ease of cutting and lack of kickback and vibration are worth the extra money. ... Read more

As for the cons, the lack of markings actually isn't that big of a deal after a few minutes of use. You simply start at one end of the dial and finding your favorite stations becomes easy. I quickly developed a feel for how far to turn the dial to my favorite AM or FM stations. Another reviewer mentioned that these muffs don't receive FM stereo. They certainly do, but only if the station is strong enough and tuned in. My other ear protection setup is a Sangean AM/FM/TV/Weather pocket radio or a scanner, and a $... set of professional grade David Clark earmuffs with speakers. Keeping in mind that this is about a $... setup, I still prefer the DC muffs for race tracks. However, the cord can get in the way while working in the shop or in the yard, and the radio needs to go somewhere. The Peltor does an excellent job, considering it's 1/3 of the price. As for blocking external noise, the Peltor muffs are as good as the David Clark units. Overall this unit is comfortable enough for all-day use, I now wear them while mowing and snowblowing, as well as in the shop. I am happy enough with mine that I bought a pair for my father-in law. Over the six months I've had mine, they've been dropped, wet, frozen and heated, and they have held up well. We use non-radio equipped Peltor muffs where I work, they have proven to be very durable over the years.

I purchased this unit as a B-day gift for my brother who is a plumber. For years he's used the old standard, a Milwaukee Sawzall All.( As I have myself) Now that he has this new Tiger Saw, he's changed his tune as to who rules the roost. This saw has plenty of power to cut through the toughest of cast iron pipe. The size to weight ratio is good, and the unit feels very comfortable in the hand. The variable speed is smooth without being jerky as some saws are. If I had one gripe about this saw it would be this, it only comes with 1 blade!!!! COME-ON PORTE CABLE, even Milwaukee gives you a VARIETY PACK of blades with the saw. Oh, and the blade that DOES come with the saw is for cutting wood, not pipe which is what my plumber brother deals in all day long. This saw would have gotten 5 stars from me if only Porte Cable had included a few different blades with it. So, if you are like I, a Milwaukee fan true and blue, you might find yourself switching to a new team called Porte Cable. Ciao! ... Read more

A reciprocating saw is a very versatile tool even if you do not intend to do any kind of demolition. In addition to cutting pipes, you can also cut landscape timber and prune trees. Basically, you can use the Sawzall for just about anything that you would normally use a hand saw. The Sawzall came with two blades. One for metal and one for wood. It also came with a wrench to adjust the shoe. All of that came in a red kit box. The high quality kit box itself is made of sturdy, blown red plastic. The power cord is thicker than what I saw in competing brands at the same price range. The red Milwaukee kit box also seems sturdier, and there is a place inside that is specifically designed to hold extra blades. Most importantly, the saw itself looks and feels the way a heavy duty tool should. This kit defines high quality for a reasonable price. There were plenty of DeWalts, Hitachis, and Makitas at Lowe's. I chose the Milwaukee because I wanted to try out their brand. I suspect that any brand would have sufficed for my modest needs. This Sawzall might be a bit of an overkill for my intended use. However, I believe you will not regret buying more quality than you need. It is a hassle to have to drag out the orange extension cord. I chose a corded model because I wanted to have enough run time and power in order to be able to complete any project that might come my way. I was also hesitant to buy a cordless kit which would require a lot more investments in batteries in the future. If your intended use is strictly light duty, then perhaps a cordless model might be a more convenient choice. For its quality, reputation, design, package, and value, this Sawzall gets a five star rating from me. At a price of 119.99, this saw would be tough to beat. The closest competitor, in terms of power ratings, features, and price would be the Hitachi 13V. However, based on what I have seen of Hitachi's cases, I chose the Milwaukee. I place a lot of value on the design and quality of the case, as well as aesthetics.
That was enough to convince us and we picked one up for ourselves. So far we've found it great when tearing up our bathroom and trimming thick branches away from our roof.We also felt our purchase was validated when our electrician's weapon of choice was a Sawzall for installing conduit and a ceiling fan in our first floor bathroom. We look forward to using it to get started on the do-it-yourself projects upstairs this fall. What have we like so much about it? Well here are our reactions: It has a neat "quik-loc" blade release mechanism..its installs without any tedious key mechanism, but is very secure.

I have other Japanese pull saws, but the Shark seems to have an edge on them. The blade is easily replaceable - just push the red button and the blade pulls out, push the blade in until it "clicks" to remount it. You won't have to do that often if you replace the plastic tooth guards supplied with the saw after each use. They pull off easily perpendicular to the blade, but you will have to slide them along the edge of the blade to get them back on. (They look kind of like those plastic paper binding strips you used on a term paper.) The saw has fine teeth on one side (crosscut) and large teeth on the other (ripcut). Both leave a smooth cut that hardly needs sanding. You won't be disappointed with either tool and you will save a few bucks buying the combo!

Firstly, Dewalt assured me that the saw itself has changed very little from the old model. That being said, this saw is a winner! This thing has a durable look & feel, torque, stroke, etc. that put the 18 v line to shame. It cuts fast and accurately. Though heavier than most cordelss models, it is very well balanced when it matters most... cutting. The batteries and charger are the main updates. This being said, if I was just shopping for a Dewalt recip, I would buy the new kit. This is especially true if I didn't have additional 24v Dewalt tools or additional batteries. Two batteries are definately better than one. If, however, you already have some 24v tools... the reconditioned kit might be a good value. ... Read more

I received the Peltor set and man, oh man, does it eliminate sound!! What pc whine? What pc! This headset completely elimates those little sounds that drive you crazy. I recommend it for those who have noisy neighbors or roommates, barking dogs, drippy faucets, etc. It is amazing. Loud noises can still be heard, so the headset does not interfere with normal life and is not a safety hazard. They are comfortable on the ears, are fairly lightweight, and fit very(!) snugly. If you can't concentrate due to small, annoying noises, you would probably benefit from using this headset. The price is very reasonable, considering the benefits.

Amazon.com Review Features Reviews (13)
Because it's battery powered, the cordless Hatchet has a much smoother operation (a bit like the difference between a cordless and corded drill). The ultra-smooth and controllable movement combined with the shorter stroke length makes it ideal for delicate situations like cutting around wires, copper pipe, and other stuff that I don't want to nick when remodeling. I also prefer the Hatchet over a corded sawzall for light demolition work like cutting into drywall. The Hatchet makes drywall installation and demolition really fun and easy. Since it's cordless it's easy to move the Hatchet around, especially in rooms that don't have electrical service yet. It's also my tool of choice for headering off joists on remodel jobs. It can fit between joists that are spaced 16" O.C. and flush cut right through them with the blade facing up. A standard sawzall is too long to do this. My only complaint with the cordless Hatchet is that it's really difficult to remove the battery (hence the 4 stars). I don't know if this is a design flaw that affects all 18V Milwaukee products or if my Hatchet is an isolated instance. It's a cinch to remove the battery from my 14.4V Milwaukee drill, though. For serious use, you'll need at least 2-3 batteries and/or a corded sawzall. As a cordless tool, the Hatchet is great, but don't expect it to be able to handle tough situations. UPDATE: I have since purchased other Milwaukee 18V tools and have noticed that their battery design has been updated. The battery that came with the Hatchet doesn't release well as I mentioned, but my three newer 18V batteries that I have work smoothly on the Hatchet. So I've increased my rating to 5 stars.

Product Description Features Reviews (7) Okay, I'm no pro -- just a very enthusiastic amateur. On the other hand, since I have no idea what the correct way to use the saw is, I may well put it through a harder, albeit shorter and less frequent, workout than the pros do. A couple comments: If you need to pull the blade out of the cut before you've gone all the way through the material, be sure to let go of the trigger first, or this puppy will twist your blade into a fair imitation of a question mark. As far as changing blades goes, I can't imagine anything easier.Just flip up the little lever, give the saw a tiny shake, and the old blade falls harmlessly to the ground.Shove in a new blade, push the lever back down, and it's off to the races again.I'm not really sure why anyone would *want* to touch the old blade -- gloves or no -- before it cools off, but I agree it would definitely be a hazard. Sure, it vibrates like a Harley with a bad timing sprocket, but for this amateur that's part of the appeal -- i.e., when I fire that thing up I just KNOW I'm doing some really MANLY stuff!{g} Great saw.Wish I had one of my very own.
To sum up: Seemingly burly build quality, tons of power alas with tons of vibration, poor shoe design.
I think I'll return this one and buy a Sawzall.
The quick release tab can't be easily accessed while wearing work gloves (major flaw given that the blade is often too hot to handle without gloves) and the mechanism itself (where the blade attaches to the saw)is bristling with engineered and ineffecient bric-a-brac. When cutting through a roof, for example, tar and other materials will be caught by the mechanism and jammed into the saw until the quick release no longer works and must be cleaned out. For an example of how a saw should be built, go to the Milwaukee 6521-21. The quick release on this saw is a model of effeciency. Blades can be changed easily while wearing work gloves and the saw won't get gunked up.
