Amazon.com Review

In these modern times, where channel surfing is rapidly becoming the nation’s most popular sport, the American Lawn Mower Company suggeststo return to a simpler time with this hand push reel mower. The mower runs solely on manpower, thus saving valuable resources such as gasoline, oil, and electricity while simultaneously eliminating the noise and air pollutions frequently associated with fuel-run lawn mowers. Additionally, this mower combines necessary yard work with exercise, improving both the user’s lawn and cardiovascular health. Owners of hand push mowers also benefit from a lack of fuel expenses, and may also save by allowing grass clippings to mulch for natural fertilization.

This hand push mower provides best results when used on grasses no longer than 3 to 4 inches high. Regular lubrication of the bearings and blades with WD-40 further the success of this mower. The mower features four spider five blades, ball bearing reel. With an adjustable four-section roller, the mower has a cutting length range of 1/2 to 2-1/4 inches. Both the reel and blades are constructed from tempered alloy steel and are held in place by an unbreakable steel plate. The cast iron wheels measure 10 inches in diameter and the mower covers a width of 16 inches. The mower weighs 32 pounds upon shipping with some assembly required. --Jessica Reuling ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars American (China) Lawn mower
I bought one of these and two of the reels would not engauge the cutting bar as they should. Left patches of grass all over.

Took it back and bought a Scott's Classic 20" reel mower. Twice the price, but its made in America and the quality is there.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Mower Ever!
I borrowed this mower from a neighbor and fell in love! I was afraid to use it at first remembering the old ones from when I was a kid. I have a small european yard and it was perfect. It was so fast, I ran over the grass in different directions to get a different mulching pattern. Safe, easy to use, great for the environment!*****

1-0 out of 5 stars It was supposed to MOW the lawn
While this mower trimmed small patches of clover and leafy plants, it simply squashed down my grass without cutting it. It wouldn't cut anything taller than just a few inches, which I suppose is fine if you want to mow your lawn every other day. Any little piece of debris will stop this mower in its tracks - even a patch of grass a bit thicker than usual. My yard looks terrible and I am returning this mower immediately. I do not recommend this mower. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Order this item now. You will need it.
If you have a Ryobi trimmer take my advice and order this now.
It does not wear out that often. However, you will want to have it on hand when the original one wears out. If your trimmer line is not spitting out well it could be you need to replace this assembly.

5-0 out of 5 stars Cordless Electric Shrub Pruner
We purchased this item recently for our large yard. We have a wide array of shrubs and ground covers. The shrubber did an excellent job shaping overgrown shrubs and trimming woody rosemary ground cover. It worked equally well removing spent flowerheads from perenials. The shrubber is lightweight yet powerfull and was easy to manuver and control even on hilly locations and hard to reach corners. The lock off switch that assures that the power is off is an important safety feature. We are purchasing a second "Black & Decker Shrubber" so my husband and I don't have to fight over the one we already have. Speeds up pruning and avoids sore hands and wrists from too much manual trimming. Great gardening tool--highly recommended!

4-0 out of 5 stars Shrubbers and plants come in different sizes...
If you have bought one of these items and don't like it, that's probably why. You have to buy tools based on the type of job and outcome expectations. Your job requires a larger size trimmer.

I'm a big fan of Black & Decker. They've been making affordable and quality products for decades. The 6" cordless shrubber I just bought is no exception. However, you need to buy tools that fit the job. No tool does everything. That said, this shrubber is good for small plants, ground covers, and shrubs with thin stems and branches. I've used it on Azaleas, miniature Gardenias, English Ivy, and other assorted small stem shrubs. On a few of my shrubs, the stalk is a bit big for the tool I bought, so it gets stuck and you have to pull out the stem or branch. But applied correctly, it works well and holds a charge for longer than I expected.

4-0 out of 5 stars good for branches up to 1/8" thick, not good on grass
It is just not good on grass even though photos on the box show use in
that situation -- doesn't slice but rather chomps through the area and
just will not cut through grass. So, the long handled attachment
accessory with wheels (for trimming and edging) is not useful. The
long handled attachment also is not balanced so even though you have
more reach for taller bushes or areas closer to the ground, you have
to torque both wrists to swing the trimmer around.

However on shrubbery, it shaves well. Think of how you use a hair
trimmer - that is how it trims bushes and shrubs.

It's lightweight and not intimidating as a gas powered model -- my
wife can use it without feeling scared.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good for the Size
After having used my parents' 2 foot shrubber, and not knowing much about shrubbers, I purchased this one thinking a rechargeable one would beat their plug-in variety. While the cordlessness is a great feature and the thing has an impressive life, I was surprised by the size of this thing. I guess I should've paid more attention to the 6-inch blade description rather than the rechargeable feature. It works great for small shrubs here and there, but for a 7 foot tall bush in the back yard, it is simply adequate. So just be sure you buy the right sized blade. Otherwise, I highly recommend this.

4-0 out of 5 stars Lovely little machine
I admit that I don't generally like things with large whirring, sharp blades, but this little guy is light weight, handles well to cut only those plants that need cutting, unlike my very indescriminate weed whacker.

I didn't find the switch too stiff. You do have to put an effort into keeping it down, but that is a safety feature - if you slip, or your hand slips, you won't end up with 'shubbered' fingers. If it is too stiff when you get it, just open up the button and either shorten or compress the spring, but don't tape it down!

For two blissful nights I went out and cut down spent poppies, delphiniums and penstemon(with big tough stems), it cut like a hot knife through butter, to the extent that even my sister (who doesn't venture into the garden normally), wanted a go. The battery lasted considerably longer than half an hour.

Unfortunately, my puppy ate the recharger (the puppy is fine, he discovered the delicacy on the floor where I'd dropped it on the way to the tool cupboard)...I am trying to get a replacement but the customer service at Black and Decker is leaving a bit to be desired (the online parts ordering decided my credit card does not exist and keeps asking me to re enter it), so that's where it loses a star! ... 4-0 out of 5 stars excellent addition to DS600 shrubber
We bought this when we bought the DS600K Shrubber because we intended to use the shrubber to reach very high growth on two of our bushes. It is very well designed in that you plug the shrubber into the bottom of the handle and then have power control available at the grip of the extender's handle. Also you can rotate the shrubber in a 45 degree angle at the base of the extender to better position it for reaching up for trimming. The missing star is because the weight of the shrubber on the end of the extender feels heavy and unbalanced.

2-0 out of 5 stars Longevity of tool
The tool is manufactured to be replaced when the battery has to be replaced. On initial inquiries, local home centers will not repair it unless bought at their stores and under warranty. B&D charges $23 for the replacement battery and this does not include labor. If you understand its cheaper to get a new one instead of replacing the battery, then it's a nice tool.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best I've ever owned.
I've gone through a few sprayers over the years, usually getting whatever was at Home Depot of Ace Hardware. For the price, this is the best one I've owned, BY FAR. Excellent heavy duty construction, metal wand, carrying handle (so you don't use the pump handle), and pressure relieve valve. Excellent workmanship and works like a dream You won't be sorry if you get this product.

5-0 out of 5 stars most excellent product
I just received my sprayer yesterday, and am impressed with how easy it is to use. And a good, consistant spray makes for happy plants. This is a real bargain, and solidly built. I expect it will last for years to come. VERY HAPPY WITH THIS!!!

4-0 out of 5 stars REAL QUALITY
This is a quality item, with all the features even the pro's can appreciate. This thing even tells you when it's at the ideal working pressure, via a gage on the relief valve.Right out of the box this unit went to work, without as much as a stray dribble. The nozzle is adjustable from stream to spray so, it will reach into the tight spots, no problem. If you ever need parts it comes with an order form and a toll free number. If you take care of this item and follow the maintenence guidelines it will last forever.Check your local garden center and you'll see others with similar features but, this one has them all. I do recommend this tool. It's priced right and has all the bells and whistles too. Now get out there and control those weeds

4-0 out of 5 stars Good product
This is one of the most used tools in our lawn care arsenal. It is very easy to use and doesn't get too heavy to carry when full. We use this for spraying weed killer on spots in the yard and for spraying insecticide both in and out of the house. We may not use it everyday, but it is sure handy to have. It certainly helps us out by saving us the cost of hiring an exterminator. Its stream can be adjusted from a spray mist to a solid stream so it can reach behind or under anything an exterminator's spray could get to. This is a really good product. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Premeasured Speed Spool Line.
These prepackeged lengths of line are great for easy installation. Installing line on the Speed Spool is the easiest thing to do and it hardly gets jamed. However, I gave it a 3 for poor line durability. This type of line demenishes rather quickly due to it's thinness. If you want more durable line, I would get the .095 line thickness. (orange colored line) It lasts longer and is a lot more durable.

2-0 out of 5 stars Are you too busy to measure?
If you really don't want to bother measuring replacement line before you refill your Ryobi line trimmer, this item is for you. It includes two sets of refills that will get you back to work in 5 minutes. But if you had an extra 5 minutes to measure out ten feet of line off of a bulk spool of trimmer line, you could save a lot of $$$. I won't buy it again.

4-0 out of 5 stars Works well w/ Ryobi 132R
I have used the speedspool refill with the Ryobi 132R Electric Grass TrimmerPlus. These refills are extremely easy to install. Only problem I've had is with the 132R itself in that it does not always dispense line even though you bump the head on solid ground. Regardless, I am satisfied w/ these refills. ... Read more

Amazon.com Review

When it comes to hand-pushed reel mowers, what you want is low cost and high efficiency. That's what you get with the Great States push reel lawn mower. Though they call it their "Deluxe Hand Reel Mower," there's not much that's deluxe about it, but its simplicity is one of its nice features. When you're pushing a hand mower, fancy attachments are not what you're really after. Strength and easy maneuverability are more important, and the simplicity of the hand reel mower design, with its three height adjustment settings, allows you to do the job and get on with your weekend. The alloy steel reel and bed knife blades are sharp and strong, and, though the mower is light enough to carry, it's got enough heft for proper traction on slick grass. Assembly is easy enough--it doesn't take more than 10 minutes--and there's a limited 90-day warranty. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars What a disappointment....
I bought this mower because I thought it was a waste to hire a gardener to mow my tiny San Francisco lawn (it's maybe 15'x20'). It was easy to assemble (though one of the bolts fell out because I hadn't tightened it enough--doing it by hand is not tight enough). The first time I used it, I thought I was going to throw out my back, but I attributed it to the fact that the grass had grown pretty tall (high enough to use a line trimmer). But I just tried using it after hiring a professional to mow it a week or two ago, and it still was backbreaking work. I consider myself a strong person (220 pounds), but I could barely get the thing to budge. Maybe it works if you mow every few days and don't let the grass get too tall. But as for me, I'll probably never use it again.

Anyone want a cheap hand reel mower???

5-0 out of 5 stars Get Reel
This mower was easy to put together and it works like a dream come true. My grass was very long since it hadn't been mowed since my last mower stopped functioning and the GSM cut it with no problem. There were some tall plants that the mower just road over with out cutting; however, if you stop the mower right on top of these weeds and let the blades spin, the super-tall weeds will be cut. So this mower will easily cut tall grass and even super-tall weeds with the proper techniques and if you use it for normal mowing, it can't be beat. The mower is very easy to push, even through the tall grass and the grass goes flying out the back to make a perfectly thin mulch; as opposed to a fan mower which leaves the grass in a linear clump on the side.
This mower is much quieter than a fan mower, much quicker to use, much cheaper, much better for the environment, much easier to use, much safer, does a better job and is more fun. I don't know why people started using combustion-engine mowers or fannies as I like to call them, in the first place. I think it's a sign of the monIXgon so be careful and if you're out shopping for a mower, there is really no choice: you've got to get reel. For pharmin' out loud, just don't wind up driving around with one of those fossil fannies!

4-0 out of 5 stars It's more than adequate
After selling our big suburban house--with a big suburban lawn that we paid to have cut--we moved to a city house with just enough grass to require cutting. The previous owners left this mower in the garage, and I decided to use it, since a power mower seemed excessive. Other than not being able to get close to the edges of several mulched beds, this mower works just fine. It takes me 10 or 15 minutes to go over the grass several times, and eveything looks neat. I recently had the blades sharpened, and it performs even better than when I first began to use it. It's free, it's exercise (albeit limited), and it doesn't use fossil fuel--what's not to like? I can't understand the difficulties the other reviewers have experienced, and I have also seen a number of Great States mowers around our neighborhood. Maybe the older mowers were better built? There's also something quite gratifying about cutting the grass early in the morning without disturbing the neighborhood.

1-0 out of 5 stars Beware The Handle
As one of the other reviewers said, the weak spot is the handle. It's tube aluminum, I bent both handles forward when I was mowing and it's no longer usable. I got it second hand from a friend for free, so the price was right, but I'd never spend my own money on one. The next model up from the same company looks like a better design: the handle looks less bendy, anyway.

5-0 out of 5 stars Ignore that bad review - this mower is FANTASTIC
I'm not sure what prompted one reviewer to speak so poorly of this mower because I can find nothing bad to say.
It took me about 15 minutes to assemble. It's sturdy - but I'm sure if you man handle it and try to force it through knee high grass or try to force it to cut or break a stick that might have jammed in it that you could break off the handle ;o)
You do need to rake your yard before use - while this is a fine mower and it will cut your grass well - it is not a power mower and won't chop up and spit out sticks, pinecones, etc.
I am 5'2", middle aged, at 140 pounds a bit out of shape and I had no difficulty using this mower. On the flat, up a hill, down a hill, around the bushes - it works fine. I can carry it with one hand.
Yes, you do need to actually put a little bit of effort into it - it is not self propelled. But it is also NOT a gas guzzling, pollution spewing, noise making monstrosity either. You can hear life going on around you with this one, you can breathe in the fresh air - it makes mowing a pleasure instead of a chore. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Very good, stays sharp!
Great pruners! I have used these for over a month now, they are still sharp and cut with ease. I've trimmed all the weeds, tree's and cut along the walkway in our yard.... they cut great, I can't say enough good things about these pruners. One thing I like is they never seem to dull. My neighbor's borrowed them for a few days, they bought a pair so I was lucky to get mine back. A great value, very good pruners.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best
I have used these clippers enough by now to say they are the best I have ever used. The angle of the blades is so much more useful than the straight ones. The quality is outstanding.

18 months later and I still think these are the best clippers. Yes, it helps to have long, strong fingers. No shame in using two hands, especially when you can cut larger branches than the 1 inch promised.

5-0 out of 5 stars Maybe I need a support group
My introduction to the Corona Clipper Company came utterly by chance when I bought their Homeowners 1/2" pruner simply because it was the first one I saw. I was so thoroughly impressed with the quality of that pruner that I've since added about a half dozen different Corona tools to my collection, and I want even more!

As good as their Homeowner models are, the Professional series has a host of valuable improvements. Ergonomically, the angled cutting head makes for a slightly more comfortable cutting position, and the handles are thicker, so it's a little more comfortable to hold. And joy - the Professional series has a different type of locking clasp that's not nearly as fickle as on the Homeowner's series (my only real complaint about that line of pruners is the rather unreliable clasp).

What continually impresses me about Corona's tools is how well they're designed and manufactured. Compare this pruner to pruners that look similar, from companies like Fiskars, and the difference in the quality of the materials and construction is incredibly obvious. The thickness of the blade is a good way to compare brands - Corona's beefy blade is twice as thick as some other brands, so you know it's going to be more durable, less likely to break or wear prematurely. This pruner has a heft and solidity and smoothness of movement that other, less expensive brands lack, and it's this overall level of quality and substantial feeling that makes it a tool that will outlast its competition. When you really bear down on it to slice through a limb, the tool doesn't flex, give, or yield in any measure; it remains solid and just does what it's supposed to, every time. Yes, they cost a little more, but you really do get what you pay for.

A word of advice...if you're thinking about getting one of the larger models - the 3/4" or 1" capacities - you better have big hands, because they open pretty wide and it can be difficult to apply enough pressure to cut a branch if you don't have long (and strong) enough fingers to hold and squeeze the handles. Don't just assume that, "Well, if I get the 1-inch model, I'll be able to cut bigger branches! Life will be grand! I'll be the envy of my neighbors!", because if your hand isn't large enough to span the handles when you open the pruner around that one-inch branch, you'll end up having to use two hands, one on each handle, pressing together, and when your neighbors see that awkward maneuver, they'll hardly be envious. They may even snicker a little. ... Read more

Amazon.com Review

To ensure a neatly-groomed yard, a powerful edger is essential. Without a sharp, effective blade, the lawn’s perimeter often appears choppy rather than clean. Regular blade replacement helps prevent such flawed landscaping.

Designed for use with the attachable edger of Ryobi’s versatile Trimmer Plus, this replacement blade features strong steel construction, with sharp teeth for clean, deep cutting. With a blade depth of 2-1/2 inches, the smooth blade allows for deep edging when necessary. The blade is easy to install, comes with a two-year limited warranty, and measures 7-1/2 inches long. --Jessica Reuling ... Read more

The blade shipped has teeth in the contact area and works great. Installation was easy , although I would replace the locknut with a new one when you change the blade.

5-0 out of 5 stars cut me baby
Smooth, sleak, and easy to install. This bad-boy replaced my old dinged-up blade, rendering me a summer of edging excitment.

And when I intentionally raised the guard, I was able to use this baby to cut 2" deep lines in swatches of zoiza I wanted to roll up and remove from my yard. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Definitely buy spares
Yes, the downside is that you will go through these more quickly than some. I burn through about 3 to 4 per season for a moderately sized lawn.

The upside is that this somewhat slender string will not kill and maim when you (inevitably) get your (or Fido's) foot or ankle in harm's way. It will sting, of course, but not slash and draw blood as most other gages do. In addition, the spool is pretty cheap, easily replaced, and available everywhere (no small point when you suddenly run out late on a Sunday afternoon).

2-0 out of 5 stars Buy some spares...
You'll need a few spare spools because you'll go through the line quickly. I've found that if I hit anything that isn't grass - rocks, sprinkler heads, plastic edging - the line will break and you'll have to "bump" out a few more inches. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Product
Product comes fully assembled except for the blade. Does need initial charging of 16 hours. I used it on 10 branches approx. 3-4 inches thick the first time out and it did the job. I don't know what the problem was with the guy in Texas that recommended the chain saw type of pruner. Maybe he sells them.
Anyway with no gas & oil to mix, no winterizing, no cords and totally portable this is one nice yard tool.

1-0 out of 5 stars Spend the $$ on a chain saw pruner instead
This is a poor excuse for a trimmer. I purchased this for my father to use on his tree filled property, but he said it cut only very small braches, and not very well at that. I ended up buying a gas powered pole chain saw pruner for the same price and it did the trick. I took this one home to try and found that it was not powerful enough to cut, and hard to control at full extension. It will be in the next garage sale.

4-0 out of 5 stars Does a good job
Product comes fully assembled except for the blade. That took all of 2 seconds to install. Needs initial charging of 16 hours. I used it on several branches and it did the job.
You need eye protection to avoid the saw dust coming down. It's a little akward at first, but you get the hang of it quickly. The only thing I would say is that I agree with the previous writter. It needs a second hand grip up on the pole, for extra support and stability. Otherwise, it's a nice unit. No gas & oil to mix, no winterizing, no cords and totally portable anywhere and everywhere.

4-0 out of 5 stars Lives up to its promise
This is a very useful addition to a property dominated with trees. For a relatively cheap price (versus a Stihl), you have a product that does what it promises - prume limbs up to 3 inches in diameter with no pressure needed. The extension pole is sturdy and and the unit solidly built. While I am quite satisfied with the unit, a few improvements would make it even better. A top grip for the second hand would be very useful - this would allow for a steady grip than grasping the pole. Second, a lock and unlock mechanism on the extension (rather than a screw) would make for changing length easier in the yard. Still, I recommend this product for someone who has to periodically lop small tree limbs from 10 to 15 feet off the ground. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars My favorite garden tool.
I keep a vegetable garden in Winder, GA, and this is my favorite gardening tool. I use it for everything from initial planting (after the ground has been broken and prepared with larger tools) to scratching fertilizer into the soil ongoing. It's lightweight, convenient to hold and easy to use to loosen soil.

Also seems to be pretty much indestructible.

4-0 out of 5 stars Convenient to keep around the house
This comes in handy for some of your smaller, lower maintenance gardening projects. ... Read more
