4-0 out of 5 stars Quite nice.
I'm a little suprised people are suddenly discovering that fluorescent light is easy on your eyes. For years, before the awful, hot & harsh tungsten-halogen desk lamps, almost everybody had a fluorescent lamp on their desk.

This Panasonic takes things a step further with its "full spectrum" bulb which gives truer color than a standard fluorescent. The makers of the expensive and ugly Ott lamps have made a big deal about these newer fluorescent bulbs. But frankly unless you are working in a color managed environment your eyes will simply adjust to whatever color the lighting is.

(There are some people who, during the winter, require exposure to artificial "daylight", typically in the form of c.5000K fluorescent light. This is a legitmate medical issue, so if you live in the land of the midnight sun you might find the Panasonic has some health benefits, too...who knows).

So, for $35 you get an attractive fixture that gives soft light at your desk or computer, uses little energy, runs cooler than an incandescent and the light is diffuse enough to cover almost an entire desk. What's not to like?

Four stars because (a) its not quite as adjustible as I would like (the price of not having an ugly "goose neck") and (b) I find its acutally a little too bright sometimes and there's no way to dim this type of bulb.

4-0 out of 5 stars Own 2; have ordered a 3rd; plan to order more.
* Pro: Starts automatically. Can be controlled by external on/off switch.

* Con: Is lightweight and has no anti-slip material on base. Requires considerably flat & level surface.

* Pro: Has a long power cord.

* Con: Power cord is unnecessarily heavy & thick for the little current that this lamp draws. But perhaps the U.S. Constitution, under the infamous Interstate Commerce clause, allowed T*d K*nnedy to require the cord to be this thick.

* Pro: The shade/bulb assembly not only can tilt (up/down), as you'd have expected, but also can swivel, as you might not have expected.

* Con: Is pricey, and all Web searches on its Panasonic part number point to Amazon; i.e., Amazon seems to have no online competition for this item.

* Con-jecture: Replacement bulb might be hard to find.

* Con: Ships from North Dakota. Can take up to a week to arrive via free shipping to some parts of USA, especially the West Coast.

5-0 out of 5 stars World Class Lighting and Engineering
Was looking for an affordable inveter lamp and tried this out after the good reviews. I would say the lighting is much much better on the eyes than conventional incandescent lamps. Really well designed foldable soft light feature too. Panasonic quality and reliability a big plus. Perfect desk lamp and takes up minimal space thanks to smart design. Highly recommended

5-0 out of 5 stars Not just good for the eye, great decor light also
Very good for the eye espcially if you
use it on your PC table...folding shape
is great for decor and it emits ray of light on the
wall...I suggest getting two and place them
on each side of your monitor or LCD display,
you will love it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect desk lamp!
I really liked this lamp. It has attractive stylish modern design. It creates a spot light illuminating the area where exactly you need it. In doing this it doesn't affect the computer monitor nearby. It's very easy on eye as far as I can tell. It uses fluorescent bulb with some Panasonic' proprietary technology. I didn't have a need so I don't know yet how easy it is to get a bulb replacement. Highly recommended! ... Read more

Amazon.com Review

While space shuttle astronauts have reportedly used Laughing Rabbit photon LED lights in their endeavors, the average consumer will quickly find that there's no need to go into orbit to find uses for one of these. Extremely compact and lightweight but with a powerful beam, the Photon II white-light keychain is a terrific all-purpose minilight. Weighing a mere 5-1/2 grams and small enough to disappear under a quarter, the Photon II blazes a light trail bright enough to aid in almost any task. The LED bulb inside is covered by a manufacturer's lifetime guarantee, while the included CR2016 lithium batteries run for 12 to 14 hours of constant use. In addition, the Photon II comes with a slider on/off switch, which means the user doesn't need to apply continuous pressure to the squeeze button to receive a continuous beam. Laugh along with Laughing Rabbit as you blaze a trail under the cover of darkness. --Rivers Janssen ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars `That you may have light in the darkest of places'
These lights are simply the greatest -- very bright, long battery life, extremely small, and virtually unbreakable. I keep one on my keychain, one at home and one at the office. They are cheap enough to have a few. This brand is also the best in terms of build quality. I've compared the CompUSA ones, but these are the only ones used by NASA. . .

4-0 out of 5 stars Versatile and packable
As a Scout Leader, I have searched for the handiest light source available. The Photon II, although pricey (I got mine cheaper) comes awful close to perfect. It's small, much brighter than you'd expect, and you can take it anywhere.
It is especially effective inside the tent---I tied mine to the loop at the top and it filled the tent with enough light for conversation. It makes a great reading light, if you don't mind holding it in your mouth, and it is especially helpful late at night when nature calls.
Good feature is the snap on/off switch--so you don't have to keep applying pressure to the switch.
Bad feature is also the snap on/off switch. If you put it in your pocket on a keychain, sometimes it gets switched on and that runs down the batteries.
A powerful flashlight is the tool of choice for nighttime trail walking, but in a pinch you could use this little guy.
It also comes in handy around the house or in the car---anywhere you need a dependable source of light.

3-0 out of 5 stars Look at Inova instead

This review is really about a better alternative to the Photon-II - the Inova Microlight. I purchased the Inova at CompUSA after doing some quick research on the net. The Inova is just as small as the Photon-II and in my opinion is a better design.

1) the case is screw-less; no micro screw-driver required for a battery change.
2) the Inova's small slide switch is easier to operate
3) the Inova's LED is recessed into the case and not exposed
4) the Inova's quick-clip is easier to attach than a split-ring.

All this at a price that is 2/3's the price of the Photo-II. (icing on the cake).

5-0 out of 5 stars nice light output and small size
The Photon II is a small light that you can keep on your keychain. The light case is a little bigger than a nickel, and it uses watch-size replaceable batteries. The light output is similar to a 2AA MAG flashlight, which is enough to find your way around in a dark parking garage and up or down steps. It's also enough to find the correct key on your keychain and to see the locks on your car, house, etc.

3-0 out of 5 stars Overpriced
Works well, but similar product can be found for much lower prices. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars great light
If you are looking for a great all around use light, that never needs a replacement bulb, then this is a great one. Well made and bright.

4-0 out of 5 stars Nice LED Light
This LED flashlight has quality aluminum construction with a good on/off switch that's easy to use with one hand. I would say that the beam is about as bright as the incandescent equivalent flashlight, with the exception that the light output is very white compared to a standard flashlight. The beam pattern is a cross between a spot and a flood (probably more towards a spot) and is slightly focusable. Don't get your hopes up though. The focusing is quite limited. I'm not aware of any other LED flashlight that is focusable at all. I think there is a limitation with the technology. All in all, I find this flashlight to have a very useful beam. The LED bulb has a 10,000 hour rated life, and one should expect a set of batteries to last significantly longer than with a standard flashlight bulb, since LED's are much more efficient. The only drawback to me is that the flashlight is a bit long, since it uses 3 AA batteries. For the price, one would be hard pressed to find a better quality LED flashlight which is as bright as this one. ... Read more

Here's a nice little light in a tough little package. It's perfect for quick, occasional use, say, to shed some light on a dark keyhole. The built-in key lanyard is long enough to let you use your key and the beam at the same time, and the beam width adjust with an easy turn from spotlight to flood. It's compact enough for a pocket and tough enough to tumble around in a briefcase, backpack or handbag—-it's corrosion-resistant, too. We especially like the extra bulb packed right in the end compartment, so you won't get caught without a light. Granted, the beam could be beefier, but for its purpose, it's a great little flashlight.--Kris Jensen-Van Heste ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Not easily improved upon!
I bought a MagLite solitaire and a 2 D-cell (both black) for my dorm room in college, last september. Both flashlights are running on the original batteries, although the D-cell has seen more use and needs a change :-D This flashlight is wonderful for the price, bright, waterproof and tougher than heck! The anodized aluminum body resists chipping and rust.. which is your humble reviewer's only gripe. The small size of the flashlight may tempt a user to put it in his mouth for hands-free operation. While this works wonderfully (though may taste a bit odd) I would recommend putting a piece of tubing over the body of the flashlight to prevent wearing down or chipping the teeth. My only other advice is, you get what you pay for in batteries too, so feed your maglite good ones and you will see the difference. Beyond that I'd say this light is just about perfect in terms of small flashlights.

3-0 out of 5 stars Bright Mag "brat" burns out fast
The Mag Solitare is definitely a recommendation for a present to anyone, especially loved ones who need a handy little light for any reason (from finding keys to somehow ending up in the forest behind their house looking for Fizgig the lost family cat and didn't bring a regular flashlight but have their keychain on them). It's a bright sucker and has a spot to flood beam. For a small flashlight, that's a generous feature. It comes with a spare bulb in the cap (nice) and a carrying strap / loop for your keychain (of course). It also comes in, I believe five shades too. Now...for the annoying parts.

I had to replace at least two due to this fact: the battery compartment hopper is the part of the light that's attatched to the keychain. It's so easy to unwind and open, that after all that jiggling your keychain does, it comes off very soon. Sometimes I'd remember to check it, and sometimes, I'd be left with just the cap and no light in sight. Also, this light is a battery thirsty little devil. After a good half hour of on/off use here and there, that little light becomes a pale friend. Terrific.

So, that said, is this light recommended? Yes-if you have a fresh new extra battery on you (in the car, or your purses...ladies), and if you check the battery knob every few days and tighten it regularily. Mean it.

Take care of your Solitare, or it's lights out.

1-0 out of 5 stars If you buy, hope like hell yours doesn't break!
3 weeks ago, I contacted Maglite for a replacement switch for my 4-D flashlight, in which the switch failed. The customer service rep asked me for my serial number, which I gave her and she assured me that I could get a replacement switch. I gave her my name and address and she said that a shipment had just gone out, and it would be in the next shipment. That was fine with me. Days turned into weeks. Still no part. More days went by. STILL no part in the mail.

Hmmmm. Is this how long time customers are treated? I previous owned a variety of their flashlights, from an AAA Solitaire to a 5-D flashlight, at least 5 in total. My dad has purchased in the neighborhood of 15 or more himself, starting in about '86 when someone else turned him onto Maglites.

Customer support is as important to me as the product itself. Has customer support become a casualty of a tough economy?

This long-time customer will have to look at alternatives the next time he's buying a flashlight.

1-0 out of 5 stars Well built, but useless
The Solitaire is relatively well built, but the poor beam makes it useless. Its not bright even with fresh batteries, and it QUICKLY dims. There is almost no sidespill, even when adjusted to wide beam. It eats up batteries, and has very poor beam quality.

This is the only Maglite model that I rate as below satisfactory. It flat out fails.

There are better options out there. Arc flashlights are very bright for their size, reliable, and have a good beam. They use LED bulbs that never burn out. Plus, they are semi-regulated so that they maintain their brightness for longer periods than the Solitaire. Other pocket lights worth looking at are Photon Microlights and the CMG Sonic (both use LED bulbs). Shop around, decide what works best for you and is in your price range.

That said, I cannot recommend the Mag Solitaire regardless of price. Its poor beam and dim output make it all but useless.

1-0 out of 5 stars Fragile and dim
These are cheap, but the bulbs are very dim and prone to breaking. I'd carry one in my pocket, but every time I came to use it I'd find that the bulb had gone. There are much better lights out there - some of the best are made by ARC. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Design - overall quality is good
This is a great addition to the Maglight flashlight, you can mount it in your car & always have your flashlight handy. The overall construction quality is good but will break if not used with some degree of care. I have had (1) clip break out of 4 pairs in three years. I highly recommend these mounting clips for convenience & just wish they were made a little bit more heavy duty.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for a Van or a Garage
I have used these before, but the price here was great. Mag has figured just the right tension on the clips to hold the flashlight secure, yet make it easy to grab often. I have used these for several years. I have tried others, but these are the best.

2-0 out of 5 stars Cheap
Poor quality plastic brackets .Not up to mag light standards.

4-0 out of 5 stars Keeps my Flashlight handy...
I have a set of these mounting brackets bolted to my garage workbench and can always count on finding my Maglite flashlight just where I left it - safe and secure. The plastic seems a bit fragile, but in the two years that I have used them, I have never had a failure. The flashlight securely snaps into place and is not in danger of falling out.

If I were to do it again, I'd buy a set of these in a minute. It functions well and does the job for which it was intended.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not worth the money at all
Both my wife and my electrician managed to break a pair of these. Unless you are really careful when setting the light in place, they give away. It's the cheapest of plastics and does not take a beating. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Cute, cute, cute....
When my husband received this as a gift....I promptly stole it from him. It is nice and light and you can keep it in your purse or in the glove box in the car. If your headlights went out you could use it to drive by...just kidding. The light output is very impressive. I like this size since the larger 4 and 5 battery sizes are very heavy. I wish they would dream up something besides the diamond-knurled grip. It gives me the same feeling as chalk scrapping on a chalkboard does!

5-0 out of 5 stars The best Mag Light
This one is just as bright as the AA Mini MagLite and is considerably thinner and lighter. Extremely durable. I've had one for several years now and it's taken quite a beating in the car and in my toolbox.

5-0 out of 5 stars Reliable little light
This is the perfect size light to carry with you in your pocket, for whatever you need to do. In my case, I use it to examine patients in my work as a doctor. The beam is strong and it has not failed me yet. Highly recommended- with Mag, you can't go wrong.

5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect for medical professionals.
If you're like me, you're always shining lights into people's eyes, ears, and mouth in clinic and on the wards. It's important when checking pupillary reactivity to have a strong, even, consistent light that you can trust!

This light fits the bill perfectly. It clips into your whitecoat breast pocket and stays there. It comes in several stylish colors. And the ability to manually focus the light allows you to eliminate annoying 'hot spots' and 'cold spots' in the beam, common with cheap penlights, that might lead the naive medical student to miscall an afferent pupillary defect on the difficult 'swinging-flashlight' test!

I've been caring for patients with my Mini MagLite for more than 3 years. I'd urge you to do the same!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for camping
I used this light for years when I led camping trips with inner city teens. It worked out perfectly when trying to negotiate a small tent. You can hold it in your mouth to direct it's light or use the candle feature. Either way it's small size and ruggedness was exactly what I needed. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Cool extras for your double A mini mag.
This is a great accessory pack. The rubber lens cover allows you to change lenses quickly, the red lens allows you to do things in the dark while maintaining your night vision, and the other accessories allow you to carry your flashlight just about anywhere. The only problem is that the different lenses are really easy to lose if your not using them.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for astronomy
The red lens is great for astronomy because it does'nt destroy your night-vision like a white lightbulb does. The other accessories are handy so you don't lose your flashlight when you are looking through your telescope.

Amazon.com Review

Unless you've been hiding for the past few decades, you're sure to recognize this classic from Mag Instrument. The solid dependability of Mag flashlights is hard to top, which explains why the brand is so popular with police officers, security guards, and other people who can't afford to be left in the dark. This three-D-cell model is great for home use and an essential part of any home emergency kit. It shines as bright as anyone could ask for, and a simple twist of the head changes the beam from a spot to a luminous floodlight. Having a Mag flashlight on hand can keep an inconvenience, like a November blackout, from becoming a small disaster. It is also a great light for illuminating the woods and keeping the bears at bay on summer camping trips. The weighty feel of a Mag flashlight also offers a sense of security in the dark that other flashlights just don't have, enough to give you the confidence to confront any basement bogeyman or mountain monster. --Brian Trinen ... 1-0 out of 5 stars The technology is too old
Maglites were once considered the best of the best, but that was over 20 years ago. The Surefire and Streamlight brands are quickly becoming a favorite of Law Enforcement Officers. Mags are just too big, too heavy and too dim. Get yourself an Arc or Surefire instead ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Makes my life easier
I have extremely poor vision that gets worse in darkened conditions. I found that this little LED "flashlight" is powerful and extremely useful. It always stays within reach on my key chain, and I use it every night.
The Lithium batteries lasted me for a more than a year of hard daily use before needing to be replaced. It is very useful in when trying to see a menu in dimly lit restaurants, but remember to cover about 75% of the LED, as to not disturb others. People like myself who absolutely need to see in these settings (i.e. diabetics who need to check glucose levels at meal time) it becomes indispensable. The light is extremely useful when I navigate for my wife in the car. The light does not disturb her like the dome light.

I purchased one for a friend who is a pilot, since the red light does not effect his night vision; he now keeps an extra one on hand, just in case.
Other uses:
The red light emitted from the LED, can not be seen by deer, which makes useful for hunters in their stands while waiting for light or as backup for a flashlight.

Auto, boat, camping / hiking emergency or survival kit. The LED can be seen for some distance in the dark if looking directly at the source. If you point the light downward, the illumination is not noticeable.

The only con is that the red light does not give much contrast. I have a green light that provides more contrast, but it's hard on the eyes. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Where's YOUR Maglite?
I bought my Mini Maglite and companion holster primarily for camping, but in a blackout such as the one that struck most of the northeastern US and chunks of Ontario this week, this simple holster really proves its worth.

The belt loop is essentially the whole top portion of the holster, so it slides smoothly onto even a wide belt, with no clips or other protrusions to get caught on anything.

The rest of the holster is essentially a smooth pouch that perfectly fits the two-AA Mini Maglite. Hold it upside down and the flashlight is unlikely to fall out, but reach for the light and it slips right into your hand.

Let me tell you, last night I was glad I had this item and the Maglite. ... Read more
