Torque, speed and great ergonomics: DeWalt pulled it all together in this 14.4-volt XRP 1/2-inch drill/driver. Even at its peak 450 inch-pounds of torque, you feel no twist. We're impressed, too, with the patented three-speed transmission for whatever material you're drilling into. Its max speed of 1,800 rpm is 29 percent faster than high speed. We like the all-metal ratcheting chuck with carbide jaws because we've had a bit slip every now and then, and the jaws help keep a tight grip on the shank. It's well-balanced, comfortable to grip and a joy to use. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Timely orders
I just received my 3rdhand contractor pack that I had ordered on 05/17/04. It arrived on 07/17/04.after I cancelled my order through Amazon.com and reordered directly from TOOL CRIB using there 800-635-5140 number it only took 4 days to receive the order. I suggest that if you want a tool from Amazon.com, you order it direct from Tool Crib.

5-0 out of 5 stars 3rd Hand - my 24/7 "on call" helper
My 3rd Hands from FastCap are always available, never late for work, and will hold things in place for days if called upon to do so. Better yet, they do not get a paycheck! I have used these tools for installing cabinets, holding blocking in place while glue is setting up, installing mouldings and doors, setting up a dust barrier before sanding, and with the larger Universal Foot - installed sheetrock. While I wouldn't recommend this product for jacking full sheets of rock, they work very well for holding smaller pieces in place. They seem to handle the 70 lb capacity easily and are holding up well after repeated use. An excellent investment!

2-0 out of 5 stars Risky Buy
My supports arrived with no visable damage to the box but when I opened one up, the small plastic joint for the hand was broken off. I could use a good support of this type but this one is a bit fragil.

5-0 out of 5 stars Saved my back!
Got 4 of these units. Have used them for installing kitchen cabinets on two jobs so far. WOW! once you get the hang of adjusting it and getting it in place, they are better than having a work partner. They don't give opinions. They just do their job. The loads I have put on them have been fairly heavy and they still held it using multiple jacks.

Found them very useful too for acting as pushers when installing a deck to push some deck boards into line when they are a bit warped.

Used these jacks as floor to ceiling push clamps during a wood floor installation. After gluing in place the wood flooring, placed a scab 2x6 plank on leading edge of new floor and used these jacks to apply some downward pressure keeping all the installed floor snug and down tight until the adhesive set up. The floor is beautiful.

Expect to also use them soon to hold up a plastic barrier around an area I will be working in order to control dust and dirt migration. Could work very well if you are spray painting indoors.

Always carry at least two of these with me at all times now.

5-0 out of 5 stars 3rd hand, my helper
I purchased the set of "3rd hands" with hopes of the jacks helping to hold items an poly walls. After haveing it for less then one week, I just love it. I work alone most of the time doing remodeling and new home trim and etc. most of the time. In remodeling the poly temp. wall keeps customers happy, but the 3rd hand keep me happy. Hanging cabinets, installing long ceiling molding, esspecially getting the cut mark. Holding up and in perfect place pocket door tracks. Had to cover the wood unfinished ceiling so the spray insulation guys could do their thing. This is just the beginning in less than one week. Just great!! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Wagner MMC220 moisture meter
I bought this meter two weeks ago. After playing with it my impressions are this is a very good meter in general with a very good range. Unlike model L609, this has an automatic shut off switch that shuts off after a couple of minutes of inactivity. The are only a few minor negatives in ergonomics, which are not a big deal, but could make the unit easier to use. For something costing $270, it should have a strap to prevent inadvertent damage from being dropped. Also at this price, it should have real button switches instead of cheap, and unreliable membrane switches.

The density correction is also a tad of a nuisance to use. After the unit has been turned on, if you want change the density setting, you have to press the species button once to reveal the current setting. Then if you want to change it, you'll have to hold that button again for a second or so in order to enter the density change mode. Then you press the button again or hold it to scroll or fast forward to the new density setting. It's not a problem at all if you only have to change the setting once in a while, but if you're in a store with lots of exotic woods and you have to change the setting with each species, it gets to be a little annoying. Maybe some kind of electronic rotary input dial or even a numeric keypad might work better.

5-0 out of 5 stars AWESOME!
I don't know how I ever lived without it! Specific Gravity chart does not cover very many of the exotic, imported, and burl woods that I use. However, it's great for all other woods and you can make educated guesses on my difficult lumber. Every woodworker should have this unit. It's the best I've ever seen!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Wood Butcher
I have been using this instrument for four months How did I ever do without this meter... I recently attended IWF-2002 in Atlanta. Wagner, etal were showing their various moisture meters at this show. I took some sawmill lumber to the show with me. I tried all of Wagner hand held moisture meters. I quickly discarded all of them except the MMC-210 and the MMC-220. I decided on the MMC-220 because of the capability to calibrate this meter for any species of wood using specific gravity. It is easy to calibrate and use and does not leave holes in the wood. I would recommend that anyone using saw mill lumber and air drying the same USE this meter. It is definitely the best of the hand held meters. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Hard to see laser line outdoor
I have just bought it from Amazon.com a month ago. This is my first time to use a rotary laser. I have used 2' laser dot type level for several years with 360 degrees base. For the first time,I used a rotary laser for outdoor project that is very small size 11' x 12'patio, and 3 side walls already there without roof. There is 6' aluminum patio door on each wall. Even in the morning( Sun has not come to my site yet.), I could not see the laser line except only one corner. So I had to use the dector. I marked level. I checked again with dector. 1" difference. Then I had to check the level over and over. It was a big headache. I still think it caused by the aluminum frame of patio doors on 3 walls, because dector uses radio frequency. If it is so, instruction manual should include this kind of information. When I have used laser dot type level, I can see the dot far more than 50' outdoor whether under sun ot not. I am not sure whether it is normal for all rotary lasers that is hard to see the laser line outdoor even in the very small area, or it is too cheap comparing to other brands. ... However It works very good indoors. I would like to give 4 stars for indoors, and 2 stars for outdoor

5-0 out of 5 stars Remodeling
As a small remodeling contractor I frequently work alone. I need tools I can depend on to save me time and perform well. I bought the 7690-2 specifically for a ceiling job. The room is 15x40 in a very old house. Floor and ceiling are way out. The laser performed quite well. In a well lit room the beam was visible in rotation mode at 40'. When dithering the brightness increases considerably. Beam thickness is about 1/8" at 40'so I calculate from beam center. Construction and performance is very good, well worth the money. Controls are easy to use and understand. the remote control/sensor is very convenient and I have used it more than expected.
A self leveling rotating laser (in two planes) at this price and performance level earns it 5 stars.

5-0 out of 5 stars A tool that makes me money!
As a buidler that was schooled on the old David White L6-20 dumpy level, I am really juiced with the influx of hi-tech tools that are now on the market. To date I have purchased two of the RT-2's and have noticed a distinct improvement in the overall quality and speed of our work. The self-leveling feature is a must have for worry-free accuracy. The remote control saves me time and money. Whoever dreamed of the additional plumb line is my hero- it really helps with framing and has put an end to the complaints and call-backs from the finish guys about our walls being out of plumb! My only wish is that the rotating beam was a little brighter but the enhancement glasses and the line dither readily compensate. And the price- unbelievalbe.

5-0 out of 5 stars enthusiastic recommendation - exceeded expectations!
I bought this to build a 60' x 130' clear span arena. I have used just about every feature on the product, and it worked great (and SOLID) every step of the way. Used it to: line up post holes, plumb posts, calibrate level/height for beams/trusses. working alone, or with a small crew, this unit is a BIG time-saver. no problems with battery life, reliability, repeatable marks/measurements, outdoor job conditions. the sensor on the remote control was a HUGE help, and is dead on (within 1/8th inch) over 130' span. This was a good buy!

4-0 out of 5 stars Cautiously optomistic
I bought this model after the less expensive RT-7210 died after 10 months and some problems, kinda foolish I know but I was and am hoping this one is built better.I won't go through what it does or doesnt do, the literature covers that very well, my major concern was that it did exactly what they said it would do, not a small issue since if you have done any homework on these things you'd realize that the performance claims represent a lot of bang for the buck. I confess this is only day one on a 100' x 70' concrete form, but out of the box this thing came within 3/32" over 140' to a trusted ERP, which in my book is dead on,....surprised the heck out of me. In broad daylight, outside, I kind of miss my faint red dot of the other model ( but not chasing it), the target built into the remote works very well. Pretty impressive for the money..if if if if it continues to perform as well in the future. I will handle this thing like I did my old one, a fragile christmas tree bulb. I've taken the time to write this because these review threads have helped me in the past, they are a good idea as long as you don't have manufac. reps. sneaking comments in. ... Read more

All right-angle drill drivers are not the same. Sure, they get the same job done--but it’s how easy the tool makes the job that sets the brands apart. This DeWalt model that comes with our highest recommendation. Powered by DeWalt’s system of nice, compact 14.4-volt batteries, the tool boasts a tight, thoughtful design. The best feature, we think, is what DeWalt calls its "multi-grip trigger." The trigger is as long as your little finger, and the lower section of handle is textured for a sturdy grip, allowing you to get the tool up into a tight workspace with an extended reach that the other brands don’t offer. Another advantage, if you have smaller hands: the easy-to-grip battery is slides on and off easily. Two speed ranges, 0 to 400 and 0-1,250 rpm, offer you lots of applications. The drill is tough enough for the pro and feature-friendly enough for the do-it-yourselfer--we can envision this making quick work of a ducting project at home or on the job.Installing drawer guides in a case piece? No problem with this DeWalt. It can even handle larger bits and fasteners with its 210 inch-pounds ofmaximum torque. Two batteries, a one-hour charger, and a hard-plastic carrying case round out a great package. --Kris Jensen-Van Heste ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Exactly right
This drill is a great combination of size & power. I use it for all kinds of stuff. Hogging through studs for electrical, pocket drilling in tight spaces, driving screws, etc.

The more I use it the more I like it. I considered the 9.6v makita but was concerned that it wouldn't have the staying power to drill lots of holes through studs (this was the case for the non standard 9.6v makita). Also I wanted the slow speed this drill provides.

Eventhough this drill was a bit pricy I am glad I choose it. It is serving me quite well.

I only wish it had a clutch for driving screws. This keeps me from giving it 5 stars.

5-0 out of 5 stars Why did we not buy this sooner!
We install a lot of kitchens, this pays for its self when putting in a 12" wide or less cabinet, trying to secure the face frames. If you can justify it the budget it is well worth it! Please its not t tool you use lots and lots, so you get two 14.4V batteries that interchange with your other Dewalt tools!

4-0 out of 5 stars DeWalt DW966K-2 14.4-Volt 3/8
I really like this drill and use it all the time on the job. It really can get you out of a jam sometimes. The DW966K now comes with two batteries for the same price as the old kit with only one battery. They are the standard 14.4V battery packs, not the XR extended run-time packs, but this is a good thing because the whole idea behind this drill is to get into the tight places that other drills can't, and having the shorter standard battery sometimes makes the difference between being able to get the drill into the work area, or not. The cordless advantage is evident for working in cramped areas, such as when installing cabinet drawer slides or under cabinet lighting. The keyless chuck is not excessively shrouded so it is easy to get at and is a welcome feature on this type of drill. I have used it with all sizes of spade bits up to 1-3/8" and hole saws up to 1-3/4". The tool could easily handle a larger hole saw, but because it is only a 3/8" chuck, the larger 7/16" shanks won't fit.
The DW966 has a two-speed gearbox and elongated variable speed switch with reverse for screw driving/removal applications, making it far more functional than DeWalt's disgraceful DW160 corded version, which does not reverse. The DW966 does not have an adjustable clutch, but then that is common for all small 3/8" right angle drills, and it is doubtful that it would be of much advantage driving screws in tight work areas anyway.
Overall, I feel that the DeWalt DW966 is by far the best and most functional cordless 3/8" right angle drill available at this time. Makita's 9.6V and 12V cordless designs are now outdated by compare. The tiny Metabo 4.8V power grip is a straight drill, not a right angle drill, so it doesn't qualify. It also must have been designed as a concept tool for the electronics assembly industry or for use in outer space, because it's use in the construction and MRO industries on this planet seem limited.
My only wish is that the engineers at DeWalt would get off their butts and finally produce a 1/2" cordless 18V and 24V right angle drills. They should model them after the DeWalt DW120 and DW124 [formerly the Timberwolf] corded right angle drills, with at least a 2-9/16" auger bit and a 4-5/8" hole saw capacity.
There isn't an Electrical, HVAC or Plumbing contractor alive who wouldn't give anything for a cordless drill like that. ... Read more

Amazon.com Review

Impressively compact, lightweight, and comfortable to use, Panasonic's 12-volt drill/driver fits into tight spaces where other bulkier drills won't. The 3 amp NiMH batteries deliver impressive run time per charge, which is a big plus, especially if you need a tool for continuous use. What about power? This Panasonic packs up to 293 inch-pounds of torque, while the motor's speed control allows full torque delivery at any speed, with dual speed ranges of 0 to 400 and 1 to 1,300 rpm. The 1/2-inch chuck takes bigger bits. The first thing you notice about this tool, however, is how compact it is (the chassis measures only 8-3/16 inches) and how comfortable it feels in your hand. The soft-pad grip provides extra cushion and the balance is superb, two important features if you wield a cordless day in and day out. The tool lacks an onboard bit holder, but that's about all it lacks. This drill is a smart buy for plumbers, electricians, carpenters, and even woodworkers--in short, anyone who wants a small, compact drill that packs a lot of torque and is built to last. The package includes two of Panasonic's long-lasting 3 amp NiMH batteries, a universal charger, and a hard-plastic carrying case. --Jon Groebner ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Best cordless ever
I've been using cordless drills since they first came out 25yrs ago. I've had 7.6 volt skill, 9 volt B&D, 12 volt skill, 12 volt bosch, 14.4 Riobi, 14.4 DeWalt and 18 volt Bosch and the 12 volt Panasonic is the best. It's light and the batteries hold a charge longer then any other. I use my drills all day everyday and I have to change from driving screw to drilling holes and this drill works and it doesn't wear out you arm. What more could you want. Yeah it cost more but you get what you pay for.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Drill you will ever buy!
After going through a couple of medium priced off the shelf drills that either locked up or were too heavy to use comfortably in a days work this one proved to go the distance! Lightweight, very quiet, easy to use, and super powerful! One year old and going strong! BEST DRILL EVER!

4-0 out of 5 stars Good drill, although expensive
Panasonic makes good cordless drills/drivers. They are well designed and last a long time. Probably the best 2 things about them is the flawless chuck design (holds even the smallest of bits in place without coming loose), and the long 3.5Ah runtime batteries. That said, they are more expensive than other brands.

I ended up with a Makita 14.4v. It was a much better value for the money especially because as of this writing, Makita is offering some attractive rebates. Also I liked the feel and balance of Makita better. The Panasonic has a huge and heavy battery while the Makita's battery is lighter (but probably doesn't last quite as long). Subsequently, the Panasonic felt like a brick was attached to the handle. Also, the case that comes with the Makita is much better-more sturdy and better designed (although larger) than Panasonic's cheapy case. Further, the Panasonic battery charger is much larger than the Makita one.

This kit comes complete with the drill, a black plastic hard case, 2 batteries and charger.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best of the lot
Having used and worn out cordless industrial drills from AEG, Bosch, Black & Decker (DeWalt), Milwaukee, and Makita, I conclude that Panasonic (my several-years-old 12volt version of this one, with NiCD batteries) beats 'em all hands-down for quality, versatility, and long life. The 15-minute fast charge option (now 20 minutes as the batteries have aged) has been helpful at times. The 21-stage friction torqe clutch has been consistent, unlike Bosch's misbegotten electronic torque limiter design. Most important, though, in my opinion, is the automatic spindle lock and SUPERB chuck that grabs and HOLDS bits without slipping, unlike every other keyless design I've used on portable drills. When this baby bites the dust, Panasonic will again be my first choice for replacement.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Drill
I bought this unit a few weeks ago and am very satisfied with it. But this is my first cordless drill, and I've used it only for relatively light-duty projects around the house, so take my comments with those caveats in mind.

I've found the weight, torque, and comfort in the hand are all excellent for me. Some people I've shown it to have commented on the whine it makes, but but I don't think it's any noisier than other drills, just different sounding.

I took off one star because the trigger doesn't give a continuous range of speeds. It starts well at slow speeds, but tends to "kick over" to a very high speed with no transition as the trigger is pulled back. This happens in both the Low and High switch settings. That can be disconcerting.

Things missing that some (other) users might care about: No built-in level; no place to store screws/bits, etc. on the base. Good feature some other units don't have: stands up nicely on its handle. Good universal charger, and I like the NiMH batteries for ecological reasons if nothing else. There is a unit with 3.5 AH batteries, but I got this one with the smaller batteries because I figured the lighter weight was more important than the presumably longer work time between charges for my uses. The chuck is very easy to use, and looks like it runs true to me. Instruction manual tells nothing, but what didn't you know about what it does? ... Read more

Amazon.com Review

As everyone knows, both plumbing and electrical work require drilling in tight spots. While the Milwaukee Hole Hawg may be the choice for most professional plumbers and electricians, this less-expensive right-angle drill is a solid option to consider for the same applications. Featuring a slim, lightweight design and great versatility, Milwaukee's right-angle drill has a 1/2-inch chuck and three speed ranges and is fully adjustable. The head and handle swivel 360 degrees and can be locked tight in any position, allowing you to fit this drill anywhere this drill could possibly fit. HVAC contractors can use this drill with bits to 4-5/8 inches without a problem. And, if necessary, the right-angle mechanism can be removed and the drill converted to straight D-handle use. If you have major remodel or construction plans, this is a smart drill to consider. --Tim Block ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Power and Poise
The Milwaukee Right Angle Drill 3107-6 applies allot of torque to spaces you otherwise would have trouble reaching with a regular drill. It is ideal for drilling holes between studs for electric, cabling or plumbing. The unit is basically their 7 amp variable speed D handle drill featuring triple gear reduction with a Right Angle Drive (RAD) unit attached that can be set in either low gear at 355rpm or high gear at750rpm. The D handle drill without the RAD will achieve 500 RPM. Changing chuck speed from high to low or visa-versa requires removing the chuck, reversing the RAD unit and then replacing the chuck on the other side. This is fairly easy but it takes about 2-4 minutes and requires a couple of tools that are provided. The Right Angle Drive (RAD) can be easily swiveled 360 degrees providing versatility to meet any drilling angle.

Using the drill is a pleasure as it has so much torque it just seems to eat the wood up. No standard hand drill I ever used has this kind of power. The build quality of the unit is of the highest standard and will likely last a lifetime of moderate to heavy use. This model is also fitted with Milwaukee's "quick lock" cord allowing easy replacement in the event the cord becomes damaged.

For remodeling, basement finishing, or extensions this drill really shines. Trying to accomplish drilling many holes in wall studs with a standard electric drill would be very time consuming if not impossible for simply not being able to fit one between the studs. If however you do this kind of work every day as a business I would consider either the Hole Hawg or the new Super Hole Hawg. These units are more expensive but feature higher chuck speeds and a transmission that allows you to select the high or low speed without the use of tools. This will allow you to get work done faster when on really big jobs. But for the home owner that enjoys remodeling this Right Angle Drill is really the best choice as it is two tools in one when you consider the D-handle alone with the RAD unit removed.

Built like a tank and as much power as you could ever need this drill definately delivers. The only variable will be your choice of bits, I have to place my vote on the Milwaukee self feed bits as they cut very fast and will last a long time between sharpening. So if you have some branch circuits to run or some plumbing to install go get this drill and some self feed bits. It will make the job go much easier.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must have for electrical and plumbing work
I do not know how I did it before this tool came into my arsenal- It is a monster that makes quick work of boring holes between studs or joists to run pipes or wires. Once you use one of these with a self feed or auger bit, you will never use a standard drill with a wimpy paddle spade bit again for this purpose!

5-0 out of 5 stars powerful drill for tight spaces
This is a great drill for making holes in tight spaces. I have gotton by over the years with a 3/8 inch electric drill and spade bits/hole saws to make all of my holes, but I dislike the spade bits because they take forever and quickly wear out, while hole saws often bottom out when cutting anything thicker than 2 by lumber. But this drill, combined with Milwaukee's and Dewalt's resharpenable self-feed bits, makes drilling holes almost effortless and I can now reach spots that I could not have before. The lower RPMs combined with the extra long side handle keep this high torque drill under control when drilling large diameter holes. I purchased a reconditioned unit for the equivalent of about 3 weeks of fees at the local rental center and it looked brand new. I have had good luck buying reconditioned gear and I tend to trust this stuff because I believe that they have been carefully examined and all the defects removed. There's no doubt that this is a specialized tool, but if you have a lot of plumbing and/or electrical work to do than it may be worth getting. It will save you a lot of time, grief, and sweat in the long run.

5-0 out of 5 stars Powerful drill for heavy duty work!
I have renovated several houses and a cabin. One of the tools I always needed was a right angle drill. I bought it and have put it to use drilling holes for electrical wiring and running pipes for plumbing. This is a powerful 1/2 inch drill which will let you drill in between studs, joists and other tight spots. I strongly recommend the Milwaukee Selfeed bits which assist in the drilling process by drawing the bit into the wood. I bought the plumbers bit kit which includes a great selection of the Selfeed bits and auger bits in a convenient carrying case. The only down side to this drill is that it will wear you out if you are using it all day lifting it up overhead. This tool has tremendous torque, so make sure you have good footing and use care while drilling because this tool can literally rip itself out of your hands. But if you are using this tool, you are looking to do some serious hole drilling. You will never go back to a regular drill with a spade bit or hole saw. No wonder you will find this tool in almost every electricians and plumbers tool inventory.

5-0 out of 5 stars A jobbers standard drill for many years.
This industry standard machine offers economical flexibility, power and utility -- and does so for a very long time. The small, tight angle head can sneak a whole bunch of torque into some very small places. The head can easily be adjusted right, left, up or down giving the user a lot of options when facing a tight-place job. The balance of the machine as well as the thoughtful positioning of the controls make it seem as though your hands are fully trained in its use the first time you pick it up. The gearing and fine working right angle drive make it almost impossible to stop this durable motor. (But you can do it in a pinch - an ode to the motor design) Last year I had to change the brushes for the second time in 26 years of use. Most people get better wear than this, but in my renovation endeavors I have used this machine for everything between removing a tractor tire to a make-do winch. Other attributes: The auxillary handle is built as well as the machine itself, and is very useable. The box is standard Millwuakee tough should last through the life of the tool. If you install plumbing vents in frame houses every day, you would do better with the venerable 1676 Hole-Hawg by the same manufacturer. Otherwise strong consideration must be given to this machine as your standard 1/2" drill. Can't go wrong. ... Read more

There's nothing you can't do with this puppy. A full 19.2 volts of power will do away with fasteners as if you had a jackhammer in your hand, and 470 inch-pounds of torque provide all the drive power you'll need. Because of the two-speed gearbox, you've got drill speed ranges of 0 to 500 rpm and 0 to 1,500 rpm. Its 1/2-inch ratcheting chuck is keyless, and the 20-position clutch takes care of drilling and driving into all kinds of material. Porter-Cable's drills are among the best on the market; you'll never regret a Porter-Cable purchase. But here's one more reason to go with this model if you're in the market for a cordless drill/driver: the interchangeable Grip-to-Fit handle inserts. Having grappled with tool handles that were too big to control, we think this system is a great idea. There are manly sized grips included, of course, but for the woman woodworker or cabinetmaker, welcome to a delight--small grips! I have one of this in a Quad pack and it is a waste of money. although the power is ok you cant keep the batteries charged. I spent a lot of money trying too figure out why the drill didnt last long and i came too an conclusion that the drill and Porter Cable Sucks. For real power and Juice BUY RIDGID TOOLOS.

4-0 out of 5 stars Porter-Cable 9987 19.2 - Volt Hammer Drill / Driver
The hammer/drill is on the heavy side, but is an excellent hammer drill. I have been drilling very hard concrete with a very good non-hammer, corded, drill and it would take several minutes to complete each hole. The Porter-Cable cordless hammer drill complete a hole in seconds. Love the drill, just a little on the heavy side.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good Tool, Bad Battery
This is a great tool; smooth, not heavy, rugged case, good power. This does have plastic drive gears which eventually wear out but is fine the casual worker or light work. I spent 3 weekends driving 3/8 lags screws and stripped the gears. No problem getting a new drill. I have 2 other similair models but the batteries last about 2 hours with medium work load and may take 4 or more hours to cool off and take 2 hours to charge. My old model PC drill last 4 hours and charges in about 1 1/2 hours. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Works Hard, Feels Great
I have had the last iteration of this drill for the past 3 years. It's a great tool. I've used a lot of the others, but this one feels the best (though I haven't tried the Panasonic). It has plenty of torque and the metal Lok-Tor chuck is really solid. You can feel and hear the jaws locking, and they grip better than most of the others. Also, the metal chuck ring doesn't get all cut up when you have to run it into metal boxes, beams, etc.

When I read that the battery could be installed from either side I thought it was just marketing hype. But this ended up being a really nice feature. Not only can you move the battery out of the way if it hits something, but changing the mounting position changes the tool balance. Unless the battery gets in the way, I always keep it in the "backward" position because it feels so much better (a personal preference choice you don't get with the other guys).

When and if this thing ever dies, I'm getting another Milwaukee.

5-0 out of 5 stars I have 2
I think that this is the best balance of power and weight. I use them all the time. Never hear of the problems that the one person had. I also have other Mil. tools and they are top notch. They are very solid tools.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Balance of Weight and Power
Fortunately, I have a job of advising people in drill purchases.

What makes this drill so special is the 465 ft/lbs of torque in a 14.4 volt battery. A bit of weight is saved with minimal power loss.

In comparing this drill to other drills, it is more powerful than the competing 18 volt yellows. The metal ratcheting chuck is a nice sign of the quality of it. Notice the replaceable brushes, which Yellow lacks. Notice the quality of the fit and finish.

The only downside is that the 14.4 batteries are only useful in the drill and the job site radio, as Milwaukee's 14.4 line is not as extensive as their 18 volt line.

As for the warranty, it can't be touched. Yellow has been downright stingy on their warranty lately, with some shoddy construction on a couple of recent drills I have seen.

The bottom line, better than a DeWalt 18, in a 14.4 version. This is a bit of overkill for a home user, but perfectly good for a contractor.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not a "professional tool"
I took a chance and bought this drill. Boy was it a mistake! Anyone who uses this drill professionally or on a daily basis will not find it adequate. The housing of the drill is cheap, the seam where the two halves of the drill come together splits apart slightly under high torque driving and actually pinches your skin. A slight fall off the top of a two foot stepladder split the case apart and missaligned everything. Recently while drilling a 7/8" hole with a spade bit the drill just quit working. I returned it to the big box to hear I wasn't the only one wanting my money back. I will be returning to the P-C which gave three years of tough service before it gave out.

5-0 out of 5 stars A good drill, but there are other options...
I bought this drill but ultimately decided to return it and go with the hammer-drill version. Even though I don't use the hammer function much, I went with the hammer drill because the hammer function increased the length of the drill's nose. The longer nose decreased the angle between the handle and the chuck so that the drill can be pointed in a tight area without the handle and/or battery hitting an obstacle. Of course, you can get extension pieces for driving screws and some bits, so the longer nose is probably a minor point. But without such attachments, the longer nose and reversible battery (which is a feature of both hammer and non-hammer drill models) allow the hammer-drill version to access tight areas where the handle/battery would interfere a little better. On the downside, the longer nose increases drill's overall length, making it more difficult to insert into tight areas where the drill's motor & chuck length is the limiting factor.

I compared this drill to the 14.4 volt Bosch Brute Tough drill, and I preferred the higher rpms that Milwaukee offered. Bosch has a better warranty on its battery (1.5 years compared to Milwaukee's 1 year), but Milwaukee's lifetime warranty on the drill beat Bosch's 3 year warranty. Although I was impressed by Bosch's durability claims, I found many similar testimonials on the Milwaukee website that attest to their drill's toughness (stories of people dropping them from heights or driving over them with construction equipment). The Bosch drill's case had a compartment to hold Bosch drill bit cases-you just snap them into the space provided. Although the Bosch kit included a screwdriver bit holder and small metal ring attached to the back of the drill, I found the removable side handle included in the Milwaukee kit a more useful option. If you want to tether the Milwaukee drill like the Bosch, there is a small ring built into the lower back of the Milwaukee drill's handle that can accommodate a tether. Just buy some thin cord at a rock climbing shop and tie a loop to the ring.

If you're mainly interested in driving screws, then an impact driver/wrench such as the cordless Milwaukee 9083-22 might be what you're after. In hindsight, I wish I would have bought one of these. The 9083-22 has much more torque, is more compact, and is better at driving screws. With the proper chuck, it can also be used to drill. For an interesting demonstration of impact drivers, check out the video on cordless impact drivers on the Fine Homebuilding magazine website.

Interestingly, if you quickly release the trigger on Milwaukee cordless drills, the braking mechanism will shoot sparks out of the rear vents. At least this is what happens when the drill is brand new.

This is a great 14.4 volt drill, but it's not the most powerful thing out there. It offers a good balance of size, weight, endurance, and cost. It's a really good choice for medium duty drilling and driving tasks, but it didn't compare to the power of an 18 volt or corded drill when drilling 1.5 inch holes through 1 inch compressed particle board with a somewhat dull hole saw bit. For heavier duty tasks, I'd skip the larger cordless drills and go with a corded one. They're cheaper and much more powerful. ... Read more

This really is a great tool. To level or plumb walls, this is a must have item. Easy, quick and accurate, what a time saver. This is another well made product from Stabila, other than the cheap plastic end-caps that are prone to crack, a very solid item. Make sure to get the padded case, not only does it keep your new level safe, it will also hold your 4' and 2' levels.

5-0 out of 5 stars Another winner from Stabila!
Wow, another cool new level from Stabila. These guys must have carpenters on staff because they always seem to come up with the greatest products for the professional carpenter. I have this level and it is fantastic. It is tight, even while extending it is not at all sloppy like the other extendable levels on the market. Like other Stabila levels it is extremely accurate. It is a little bit heavy, but the hand holes make it easy to handle. The plumb vial is always at eye level and there is a inch scale on both sides of the extended shaft. They did it again! ... Torque, speed and great ergonomics: DeWalt pulled it all together in this 18-volt XRP 1/2-inch drill/driver. Even at its peak 500 inch-pounds of torque, you feel no twist. We're impressed, too, with the patented three-speed transmission (offering 0-450, 0-1,450 and 0-2,000) for whatever material you're drilling into. Its max speed of 2,000 rpm is 38 percent faster than high speed. We like the all-metal ratcheting chuck with carbide jaws because we've had a bit slip every now and then, and the jaws help keep a tight grip on the shank. It's well-balanced, comfortable to grip and a joy to use. The circular saw slices into 2x4s like butter, and you can always see your cut because the blade's on the left. Bevel cuts to 50 degrees are no sweat; the saw's easy to adjust and the scale's clear. 1-0 out of 5 stars Disappointed Customer
I purchased a 12v cordless drill/driver 2 years ago. One of the batteries that came with the package began to fail after a year. The motor failed at the 2 year mark. The motor replacement cost was $80.00, almost as much as I paid for the drill. After 2 years for light use, I used the drill for around the house projects, I had an unusable product. Needless to say I wouldn't buy another Porter Cable drill and I wouldn't recommend this drill to anyone. I expected this drill to last longer than 2 years.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great power, very happy
I got this at the same time as I got a cheap, 15.6v Crafstman drill as a gift. They couldn't be more different. If you're considering a cheap alternative like that, let me list some differences:
- The PC has WAY more power. Don't let the voltage rating fool you. I have had the Craftsman drill bog down far more often than the PC drill.
- Brake and locking chuck - When you take your finger off the PC trigger, it stops immediately and locks in place, making bit changes much easier and avoiding turning screws too far.
- Speeds - There is a speed switch on the top of the PC, not the Craftsman. I have found this very helpful when switching between drilling (HI) and screwing (LO).
- Apparent quality - The PC feels better built. It has that steel-instead-of-plastic feel to it. It probably is a little heavier, but that's probably due to more metal and more battery, a trade-off I'm fine with making.

This drill has had plenty of power and battery life for me in my furniture building. I drilled 400 holes in a pair of bookcases and had to switch batteries once. I asssembled 8 drawers using these two drills. I had three drilling tasks: drilling a large hole (3/4"), drilling a small hole (1/8"), and turning a screw. Eventually, the craftsman drill ended up just turning screws because it was too slow to change bits on it and it was slower drilling even the small holes. The only reason I used it on the screws was to skip another bit change to put the screwdriver bit in the PC. ... Read more

Bosch's Brute Tough line of cordless drill/drivers are designed and built from the inside out to offer the most power and durability possible. At the heart of this drill is a Bosch-built unibody power train that contains the motor, gearbox, and clutch in one contiguous unit for durability and the best alignment possible. The two-speed gearbox has large all-metal gears for strength, and offers a whopping 500 inch-pounds of torque in high-torque mode and up to 1,300 rpm in high-speed mode. The 18-volt motor has built-in overload protection and externally replaceable brushes to help extend its life. The drill also has a steel-reinforced collar to protect it in the event that it's dropped on the chuck. While we don't recommend dropping your tools off one-story buildings, Bosch claims this one can stand the abuse and keep working. The final layer of protection for the drill is its flexible ABS/Nylon-blend Duracell housing that protects the insides without cracking or shattering on impact. The drill also features a a strong reliable grip and a 1/2-inch ratcheting chuck with carbide teeth for one-handed bit changes. 5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best 18V drills on the market--TOUGH!
Currently, I have in my arsenal of cordless drills two 14.4v Makita's, an 18V DeWalt, and this Bosch 'Brute' 18V. I also use (and heartily recommend) cordless impact drivers, but that's the subject of another review. Suffice to say, when one simply opts for one or two drills daily; I go for either the Makita 14.4v (if I've got a ton of things to drill and want the reduced weight) or for all around use, the Bosch. I don't think any manufacturer is offering what Bosch brings to the table on this drill. Notable items (from a professional contractor's perspective) are:

>Unbelievable run time from the batteries. Bosch really pegged it on these batteries. 2.4 amp hours, one of the largest in their class. Only Panasonic has longer amp hours, but have you tried to get parts/service on a Panasonic?

>Thoughtful, well-engineered ergonomics. Bosch is the ONLY manufacturer I know of that includes a clip (similar to a carabiner) on the back of the drill that allows you to clip into a belt hook. Other drills, notably drywall guns have these in their corded models, but only Bosch is including it in their general cordless line. Also, the drill has a very, VERY nice rubber grip set. Unlike DeWalt's, which is a harder rubber (or Makita that doesn't include it for some reason), Bosch's rubber is 'tacky' and gives a good impression that you won't lose your grip. Nice touch: They even apply this 'tacky' rubber to the trigger; that's sweet.

>Warranty. Bosch sure understands the pros needs here. 3 year on the drill; you can elect in those times to either send it in for service if it needs it, and they'll guarantee a 5 day turn-around, or you can swap it for another one. The battery guarantee is, I think, industry leading. For 12 months they'll swap it out, for the next 6 months they'll let you have a battery at 50% discount. Nice touches.

>Case. I guess I'm going to have to face that we're not going to get metal cases from anybody, anymore, but Bosch has one of the best plastic ones I've seen. Ample room for two batteries, the drill, the charger, etc. it also includes a smaller, separate storage case for loose items, and has an area of 'rows' that allow insertion of drivers and accessories (very similar to what Dremel offers in their small cases). Get this: real metal latches, too!

>Torque. Good golly, Miss Molly. This drill is on the cusp of offering impact driver spec's!!!! 500 inch pounds of torque; my old DeWalt 18V was 350; this thing is aptly named 'Brute'! Want a real seat-of-the-pants description of the torque? Put this drill in one hand and pull the trigger; you can feel it move sideways, due to the torque. Not badly, not scary, not unsafe by any stretch. All drills to it to some extent, but the big Bosch is NOTICEABLE in your hands. Very torquey, very strong.

>Impact resistance. I saved the best for last, especially if you're a pro. This Bosch offers UNBELIEVABLE protection from common falls. In fact, Bosch regularly demonstrates the tool falling from 40-45 feet at home stores; I caught one in Salisbury, NC and was blown away. You can even check out Bosch's website (www.boschtools.com) and see an actual movie of it being dropped. I have yet to see ANY other manufacturer have that type faith in their product. Drops happen, it's a fact of life. Nice to see a manufacturer designing tool integrity into the product and not keeping their fingers crossed that it might not happen. Overall, this single feature to me is worth the price of admission to professional-grade Bosch tools.

Cons: With all of that glowing prose, you might think I'm a Bosch rep. I'm not. The drill, in my opinion, DOES have two drawbacks, though they're slight. First of all, it isn't small nor lightweight. You will know you're carring around a big, powerful piece of equipment. Second: Bosch, for some engineering reason I'm sure, keeps the top speed of this drill to 1,300 rpms. That is, overall, a good, generic speed. But occasionally, I DO want an ability to spike up to around 1,700 (or faster). My five year old DeWalt 18V is just SO much faster. This is probably more of a personal opinion that job-site necessity, but I do try to uncover any of the nuances of a tool in my reviews, so I had to bring it to the forefront.

VERY, VERY Highly recommended. One of the best tools I use daily. Will withstand a tremendous amount of abuse and it's got a superlative warranty.

5-0 out of 5 stars unbeatable drill
I am a licensed home improvement contractor in business for over 15 years. I buy a new cordless drill about every year. I have owned Makita, Porter-Cable, Milwaukee, and DeWalt from 12 volt to 19.2 volt. This Bosch drill far surpasses any in the same 18v category. This drill has 500 in lbs of torque, much more than any in this group. I have dropped this drill 8' to concrete and it still works fine. RPM's don't concern me as much as torque. I did not buy this drill from Amazon due to the fact it was not available about 6 mos. ago when I bought this. The price is about $60.00 less than the DeWalt 18v and I think the DeWalt is highly over rated in the drill category. Milwaukee is my second choice. Battery costs are not a concern to me because I can not justify buying two new batteries in a year. Just replace the drill and sell the old one.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not brute tough, not even wife tough!!
I have owned this drill for less than a year in a home use setting. My wife was using it to hang pictures in a plaster wall when it "stripped out", i. e. the motor was turning but not the chuck. I purchased this drill because it sounded like the components were not likely to fail in a light duty application. Oh well...

5-0 out of 5 stars Best cordless drill on the market...
The very first thing I did with my new 18v Bosch drill was to drop it 6' onto a concrete floor. Didn't seem to affect it. Review:

1. The chuck is an engineering marvel -- has the be THE best designed drill chuck on the planet. You can remove and insert a bit, and tighten it, in practically no time at all - with only one hand on the chuck. I.e., hold the tool with your left hand (or left foot!) and unscrew the chuck with your right hand (about ½ turn is all it takes). Insert the new bit and tighten the chuck. (You can actually perform this operation with just one hand; just laying the drill on a flat surface or holding it between your legs - in fact, this may be the only drill that could be used by a one-armed person.) Many keyless drills have dual-ring chucks, the ones that require two hands to work. When the bit slips, I find those chuck designs to be nearly impossible to get REALLY tight. Tight is no problem for this tool. I also own a DeWalt ½" electric drill that requires you to hold a button down to tighten/loosen the chuck. That works OK, but on this Bosch drill, the drive shaft locks when the motor is off, so that button isn't necessary. It really is ingenious.

2. Massive torque. If you're used to a 14.4v drill or even other 18v models, keep your eye on screws you're driving. This beast keeps driving until I release the trigger. I've also snapped a couple of screws due to the high torque this tool has, when the clutch setting was on maximum torque.

3. Speed. Low speed is fine, and high speed (1300 rpm) is OK most of the time - but, occasionally, I'd like it to be a tad faster. One of the ways Bosch gets all that torque is through lower RPMs. Besides, for the types of large hole cuts and other things owners would be doing with a tool this powerful, the 1300 rpm maximum does make sense. The trigger's control of speed is flawless.

4. Battery run-time. These batteries last an incredibly long time before needing a recharge.

5. Balance, comfort, and other ergonomics are perfect, at least for me (I have big hands). Very comfortable handle - no sharp places. It's not uncommon for me to dislike tools because of ill-conceived handles, triggers that pinch your finger, sharp corners, too small, etc. This tool feels just right in my hand. It also comes with a quick-detach hook for attaching a strap or hook - nice touch.

6. Weight. Other than price, the only downside to this tool is, it is heavier and slightly larger than 12v or 14.4v drills - i.e., it's a little too heavy for my wife to use comfortably. (Of course, it's much more powerful, holds ½" bits, battery run-time is better, and it has that ingenious chuck.) In any case, I usually keep two cordless drills handy on jobs: this one, and a lighter/smaller (12v or 14.4v) drill for more delicate/small-hole drilling, or when working overhead extensively. The other reason for having two tools, in spite of how incredibly easy it is to change bits on the Bosch, is, to avoid having to change bits/drills as often.

7. The gears are made of steel. That's important to me because my Porter Cable 14.4v drill stripped it's weak nylon gears after a couple of years, long before the batteries wore out. P/C doesn't sell just that $3 gear of course - you had to buy an enter "gear box", as they call it. $60. Heck with that. No more P/C plastic-geared drills for me.

8. Nice plastic case, with a mini-case for bits. Everything fits, and it even has decent metal clasps. Well done.

9. Has the best warranty I've seen for such tools (and the battery), but somehow I doubt if I'll ever need it.

In summary, if it's not too heavy for you to use comfortably, you'll not find a better cordless drill.

5-0 out of 5 stars Brute Tough!
Been looking to get a cordless drill for a couple years, and was tired of the same ol' yellow brand everybody else has. Got the Bosch Brute after seeing an ad about it being dropped from 40' off scaffolding and then drilling a hole in concrete, etc. The Bosch Brute is an excellent choice. No other drills I've seen can change the brushes externally. For an 18 volt, it feels great to hold, and balances beautifully. I won't knock DeWalt, but if you want to try something else, and want a little more, get the Bosch Brute Tough 18volt! ... Read more

If you don't need 19.2-volt tools, here's a good alternative. You'll still get 420 inch-pounds of torque with a 20-position clutch, and the two-speed gearbox gets you drill speed ranges of 0 to 450 rpm and 0 to 1,400 rpm. Its 1/2-inch ratcheting chuck is keyless, and the 20-position clutch takes care of drilling and driving into all kinds of material. You'll never regret a Porter-Cable purchase; their drills are among the best on the market. The kit is a good deal--it includes two batteries, a charger, a case, and a bit.--Kris Jensen-Van Heste ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Buy
I purchased this hammer drill after the death of my Black & Decker 18v Firestorm. Initially, I had considered similar products from Matika and DeWalt, wanting the additional capability of the hammer action, with the smaller bulk of the 14.4v battery. The Porter Cable GTF comes in fairly robust case, complete with a diagnostic charger, stabilizing handle, 2 batteries, driver bit and different size (S,M,L) adjustable hand grip inserts. I found the drill some what hefty, with it's balance just forward of the hand grip; which is the only reason I did not give it 5 stars.

Power
Offering 420 in-lbs of torque (50 in-lbs more than the Matika and 20 in-lbs more than the Dewalt 14.4v hammer drills) it has plenty of power and will easily snap the head off a 4" deck screw driven into a railway sleeper. The high/low settings will give you 450-1400rpm, and in hammer action 18500bpm. Battery life was excellent, allowing me to do several hours of deck work before swapping batteries. The charging unit can recharge your dead battery in approx. 1hr, it will also analyze the condition of your battery for optimal performance.

Handling
As mentioned before, I felt this was heavy drill. It does not balance as well as the Dewalt or Matika, which is probably why it feels heavier, though it certainly not unmanageable; much smaller than the enormous 18v Craftsman drill, that thing is a whopper. However, because of it's forward weight, using the hammer action vertically is really easy. There is also the option of swapping out the hand grip inserts, which helped reduce fatuige on the hands and wrists. Ergonomically speaking, fine. The stabilizer handle screws into either the left or right side of the drill which is a tremendous help when using the hammer action. Either way you are still going to develop your biceps - just make sure you use both hands.

Controls
The forward/reverse button is directly above the trigger control, as per usual. The motor has the high/low switch located on top of the motor housing. It would have been nice to have an extra third gear, like the DeWalt - but not essential. The clutch collar has variable torque setting's (22) with the drill and hammer action located next to each other. The battery is removed by way of a red button on the bottom flange of the grip. Depressing this button, the battery easily slides off. The battery is securely held in place buy this same locking button.

Chuck
All steel 1/2" ratcheting chuck lock and spindle lock. The one thing I like over the Dewalt, is the fact the jaws will easily grip a small 1/16" or 3/32" drill bit. The DeWalts chuck jaws cannot clamp on small bits such as these, because of the gap where the jaws meet.

Quality/Overall
The drill is well built and solid feeling. Fit and finish are excellent, there are one or two tiny (hair width) gaps where the metal gear housing meets the plastic body, otherwise fine. It feels like it was built twice as strong as in needs to be. I did forget to mention it has two metal clips to store your driver bits. Costing...$...less than the DeWalt or Matika, it's worth every penny. For home owners just wanting to drive screws and occasional home maintenance, there are much better less costly alternatives. However, if you are looking for a true, solid work horse for frequent heavy usage and occasional defense against bumps-in-the-night, I highly recommend it. ... Read more

Product Description

The PLS360E is a self-leveling, detectable laser kit including carrying case, wall bracket, detector and grade rod bracket. The PLS360E is the PLS360 "pulsed" packaged with a detector to pick up the laser signal when the line is not visible. This is not a rotating laser, it has no rotating parts. Ideal for use indoors for suspended ceilings, cabinets finish trim and counter tops. When used outdoors you can push the "on" button twice to make it puse and detectable with the laser detector. At close distances you will still be able to see the line but you can also pick it up with the detector from 250 feet away. Set it up in the middle of your job site and get a 500 foot diameter. Bosch’s two-speed gearbox lets you match speed and torque to the job at hand. A dual-function control lets you switch quickly and easily from rotation to hammer action, and a mounted depth gauge is a nice touch other makers ought to adopt. The auxiliary handle attaches easily and rotates a full 360 degrees to let you work at any angle. The keyed chuck accepts up to ½-inch bits, and at 5 pounds, it’s far from the heaviest drill of its caliber. The soft grip and comfortable trigger with lock-on button further relieve hand strain. The case will withstand all kinds of jobsite abuse. You can’t beat Bosch.--Kris Jensen-Van Heste ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Good drill, but ..
This is a very capable, high-quality tool. I bought it to bore through brick/wood and it did very well.

However, the case is cheap. It looks like you can close/open it 4-5 times and it will be done. And, the plastic depth guage broke right away. If you don't care about the depth gauge or case, then this is very good value for you.

5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect for DIYer
This is perfect for the DIYer. Concrete isn't a problem and drilling through block is no match. I've had to drill through wet wood that bound my "yellow" drill, but it couldn't stop the Bosch. Like everything else Bosch makes, this is one excellent piece of equipment that will last a long, long time. I would have liked a metal measure stick so that it would last as long as the drill, but that's minor.

5-0 out of 5 stars Durable Drill
Bosch has produced yet another powerhouse, this thing wont give up no matter how much use and abuse you put to it. Always reliable and hard working--build to last!

5-0 out of 5 stars Hard working drill
this is my second Bosch Hammer drill. I use it in landscape construction & it is subjected to all kinds of abuse. After 6 years of drilling through every kind of material, in wet & dusty conditions it finally bit the dust. For the money, weight & price I highly reccommend this drill.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Drill!!!
Bosch has done it again, great product at a reasonable price. I've used mine to install furring strips on both sides of a 200 ft. long block building, works great. Two speed gear box is awesome and it has plenty of power for drilling through even poured concrete. Comfortable to use, lightweight and still tough as can be. You can use it all day and never wear out. AWESOME!! ... Read more
