5-0 out of 5 stars Best value/performance
This drill has excellent power. The battery life is outstanding. The weight is managable (only slightly heavier than my older 12v bosch). The clutch and electric brake have good feel. The drill is balanced well. Unlike my older drill the bit holders (2ea) work. The price on this unit is incredible (...). 19.2v is kind of unusual. However, Porter-Cable has a complete line of tools at this power, so I expect they should be around for a long time. My drill is still fairly new so the only unknown I have is how well the batteries will last. This is one of the most important considerations in buying cordless. This is the reason I chose not to buy the 18v Dewalt, or the 15.6v NiMH Panasonic. My old 12v Bosch Batteries lasted 6yrs, which given the amount of use I think that is pretty good. I went with the Porter-Cable for the price. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best
It took a little research to figure out that there are a couple of levels of quality that Starrett manufactures in these tools. This is the better 434 series - the square heads and center heads are forged, hardened steel with smooth, black enamel finish, vice the cast iron heads of the 435 series. This version also has the chrome satin rule, which is nice, too.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Great Combination Set
This is *the* top of the line when it comes to combination sets. It is perfectly accurate and easy to read. It will provide many decades of service. The only fault I see is that the set doesn't come with a case.

5-0 out of 5 stars High Quality Precision
This is a very high quality precision instrument that will
provide years of reliable service. It has very well defined,
clearly legible, engraved markings as fine as 1/64".
I used one extensively years ago and took the quality granted.
The past few years I've been purchasing and using lower cost
competitor's models. (Bad decision) It's not that the other
models are vastly inferior, because generally, they're fairly close.
If you don't use a tool like this very often, you may not notice the difference.
Even if you do, it may take a while to notice the true benefits.
The precision and accuracy help minimize the small, cumulative errors that
build up and finally reveal themselves late in the assembly process.
This is an investment in error avoidance.
To me, that's worth every penny.

5-0 out of 5 stars excellent product but where is the case
I have a Mitutoyo set that I have been using for 5 years and thought there was none better out there.I ordered the Starret set for work and when it arrived I was impressed and I immediately began checking it out against the highest accuracy precission ground square and the square head and the protractor(set at 90) where dead on. This is a great tool! My only gripe is that it came in a cardboard box. Doesn't a great tool deserve a great case? I guess Starret doesn't think so and now I will spend a good couple of days building it a proper home. Come on... would a nice wooden box have added that much to the price?

5-0 out of 5 stars perfection
If you want the best - this is it. I've worked machine shop and layout work in the plant where I've been employed the last 27 years, and I've found that if a combination set isn't made by Brown & Sharp or Starrett, it probably isn't accurate. You may think that a tool of this price and caliber is not suited for woodworking, but that's not true. I use one in my wood shop at home and wouldn't be without it. This particular model has the satin chrome finish on the blade, which isn't prone to rust, tarnish, or discoloration. It also has the reversing protractor which is a big help in laying out angles. It is especially useful in laying out miters and compound miters on structural material ( 2x4's, etc.). Buy one, learn to use it correctly, take care of it, and it will last you a lifetime - it's worth every penny of the purchase price. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Starrett Combination Square
The mating of a ruler with a sliding head makes the combination square one of the more versatile measuring tools in the shop. Its weakness lies in the fact the head is not rigidly attached to the blade. Overcoming this weakness requires precision machining that's time-consuming and expensive. That's why the Starret costs about seven times as much as the common hardware-store versions while seemingly providing only a small increment of improvement. I've used the cheaper ones made by Stanley and others, and most of the time they do the job adequately. If one doesn't plan on doing precision work, paying more for the Starrett doesn't make any sense. For those who do, however, the Starrett is worth the investment. That increment of improvement buys a tool that provides confidence in the accuracy of one's measurements. And it's a tool for a lifetime. I've know at least one person who's using one that his grandfather left him.

Assessing a tool on a sensual basis may seem daft, but the Starret feels like a fine scientific instrument compared to the slop and imprecision of the cheaper squares. When the locknut is lightly tightened there's no play between the head and the blade. The head slides on the blade without binding, and the graduations are clean, precise, and easily visible.

5-0 out of 5 stars Cheap Tools are a Waste of Money - Starrett is the Best
A coworker that said that to me once. He was right. This is the original combination square and, as far as I am concerned, the very best. I have a new C33 set and one that belonged to my grandfather (it's about 80 years old). I checked the scales and squareness against each other - perfect match. Starrett quality control is flawless. This one (the C33) is the forged steel head. I would generally recommend it over the slightly cheaper cast head (the C11), since the forged steel is a fair amount tougher - less brittle. The glossy paint is the indicator that you are getting the forged head. The cast head is done in crinkle black. Mr. Zorns' comment (see previous review) tells me that the description is correct - smooth paint = forged head. And, by the way, I would always get the model that starts with "C" - that means satin chrome finish on the blade - very, very important. As a woodworker, a combination square is an essential tool that gets used constantly. Accuracy and durability are very important. At this price, it's a bargain. Don't waste your money on cheap tools - buy Starrett and you'll never regret it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Quality all the Way
I have owned this item for years and its quality, fit and finish are unparalled. Adjustment of the sliding head is easy and it stays where you set it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Suberb tool
This is a great square. Absolutely no flaws. You can't go wrong with this tool

5-0 out of 5 stars Reference tool
I have been making furniture as a hobby for some years now and I discovered very early that practically ALL woodworking tools came as a project, not as a finished product. That is to say that most tools need to be sharpened or adjusted or tuned, etc. Starrett tools are the exception, my square came out of the box perfectly square and functioning flawlessly. That is the very reason why I purchased this tool. I use it to adjust and tune and square all those OTHER tools! Every serious shop needs a few very good reference tools, this is one. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Works great on retaining wall block
This is a great saw for the serious do-it-yourselfer. I like its portability and fast cutting time. I dislike the amount of dust it puts out compared to a wet saw. At 65 pounds you can throw it in the trunk and take it anywhere. We have been using it on cast concrete retaining wall block. The original idea was to use it on the decorative caps, which had a 3" by 12" cross-section. However, it will get about 90% of the way through a block with a 6" by 12" cross-section if you want to split the big block. Cutting time through the 6" by 12" block was around a minute, answering my concern about the motor, which looked small. The surface finish is very smooth, to get rough faced cuts you will still need to split using a hammer and chisel or block splitter. Don't try to rig your own water system to the saw, the motor has an external filter and does not appear to be sealed. Dust may be a long term issue. You certainly want face protection, a dust mask, and hearing protection.

5-0 out of 5 stars New Saw ; A cut above the rest

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Power Tool
My 12 volt Makita Driver Drill has proved an excellent tool over the 4 years I've owned it. The last of the two batteries has finally given out. Because of the high cost of replacement batteries, $50.00, I've decided to buy a new 14.4 volt kit. I'm hoping the extra volts will overcome the strain the 12 volt had on tougher jobs. Although the 12 volt did the work, it was tough going. Batteries drain fast when worked hard.
This drill is solid built and tough. I've droped it from roof tops to the ground, used it on thick treated wood. Couldn't do without the dual speed switch, it's a must. It's well balanced and not too heavy. For it's size they don't get any better.

5-0 out of 5 stars Awsome
I purchased this drill about three months ago and I have been using it almost daily on various home improvement projects. I have owned two lesser brand drills in the past and this time I went for the best. The perfomance of this drill is so much better than those cheaper brands it's amazing. The battery life is outstanding along with power and torque of the drill. I have also used serveral Dewalt cordless drills and find the performance of the Makita superior. This drill is a winner. ... Amazon.com Review

Bosch's Compact Tough cordless drills are designed to provide professional power in a compact profile and perform tough jobs in tight spaces and close quarters without compromising durability. Employing a flexible ABS nylon blend, this tool can stand up to the roughest job site conditions. This 14.4-volt model has a two-speed gearbox that delivers up to 300 inch-pounds of torque in high-torque mode and up to 1,200 rpm in high-speed mode. There's also a large two-sided fan for cool operation and motor durability and a 16-position clutch for matching the torque to your task. We like the ratcheting chuck that allows for quick, reliable one-handed bit changes and the soft rubber grip Bosch includes on all its cordless tools. For people who want the most power they can get in a small drill, this 14.4-volt model may be the best bet. It has the most torque of all Bosch's Compact Tough drills and weighs only 4.4 pounds. This model includes the drill, two 2 amp hr batteries, a one-hour charger, a bit holder, and a carrying case. --Brian Trinen ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars snapped a 5/16 lag bolt, " BRUTE" is appropriate
This is the best cordless tool I've ever owned. I've always liked the Bosch line of tools. Between the 18 volt and the 14.4 volt I ended up buying the 14.4 volt brute, and I've certainly put it to work. It has plenty of power to drive any kind of screw you want. My brother was driving in a 5/16" X 2 1/2 lag bolt while working on my deck, we both heard a snap. My brother said, "sorry , but I think I just broke your drill. Come to find out the drill was fine and he had snapped the lag bolt cleanly off, talk about power. The battery pack lasts plenty long enough to allow your second battery to fully charge, so you have no down time. The drill is very ergonomic, and a real pleasure to use. I dont generally leave reviews, but i must make an exception in this case

5-0 out of 5 stars Great little drill
I traded in my Makita 14V because I was unhappy with it and still needed a second drill. This one outperforms my Craftsman 19.2. The feel is great. The heft is right. The power is unbelievable. I am extremely happy. Even the case is first rate. everything fits in its molded space. And it even has holders for the battery covers. They just went the extra step all the way around. Very happy.

5-0 out of 5 stars Hands Down--the Best Drill Driver
What can I say? Bosch is the BEST!! You will love this tool, I promise. It's the most power you will every get from a small drill. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars I think the engineer is waving his flag to hard
I have this set from Amazon and It is an great set at a fair price. I noticed the engineer rated it poorly. I could have guesed that. He probally wants to buy a USA made set for the 69.00 dollars. Truth is that the days of cheap american goods were gone in the 50's. All this stuff now comes from overseas. Why because we wouldnt pay for expensive American Goods anymore. The Amazon quality is as good as anything for the price on the market. I did a little research on drill bits before bought this set and did you know that all of inexpensive drills set now come from off shore. Craftsman, Grizzly, Ryobi, Northern, Harbor, Woodstock, all of them. Where elese can you get 115 drill bits for that price?

1-0 out of 5 stars Absolute C**P
I am a professional contractor & electrical engineer with more than 30 years experience. Usually, I buy American made tools and accessories ONLY. Thought I'd take a chance on these. BIG MISTAKE.

Drills arrived in POOR PACKAGING. Several had fallen out of CHEAP METAL BOX. The drills were BARELY SHARPENED & OFF-CENTER.
The drills are multi-colored - obviously from overheating in cheap oil to make them "LOOK" special.

There is no independent confirmation these are cobalt alloy. In fact, I used three of them just to drill slowly into dry oak base molding. BROKE THREE DRILLS INSIDE OAK!!! WTF!!! I will never buy tools again from the Tool Crib, or from Amazon. Stick with USA made such as Norseman, Tru-Cut or Triumph Twist. Sure, you pay two to three times more, but you'll never break one unless you use it for a chisel.

This is what happens when one try to savea few $$$ and buys product made by forced CHINESE PRISON LABOR.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not worth $60
I had my set for couple weeks now and I have already broken a bit. The material is very brital. While drilling steel the bit broken in half. I also discover that the tip surface is not exactly even/symmetrical which results in your work piece wobbling on initial contact. Once the bit digs into the work piece the wobbling stops. I compare this wobbling affect with a USA made bit and there were zero wobble with the USA bit. These bits are sharp and will go through steel like butter. Overall I am not happy with the purchase. I would return it if I hadn't broken a bit. It was a waste of $60.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great bit set for the $$$
Mine came liberally oiled but not excessively so. Bits seem to perform well, case is not a mega-$$$ item, but overall, is pretty nice with sizes nicely legible. Very good value, IMHO....

4-0 out of 5 stars great tool buy from amazon.com
Amazon.com often doesn't have the lowest prices on tools. But shop around for a set of cobalt bits like I did, and you'll find that this set from amazon.com is the best price around.

These bits go through aluminum like butter, and are definitely up to the job for steel. I haven't had them long enough to comment on their durability, but so far I prefer them to a set of TiN-coated bits I've got.

4 stars because some of the bits seem a bit out of true when chucked. UPDATED: Some of them really are not straight, I verified this by rolling them on a granite surface plate.

If you're doing a lot of work with metal, do yourself a favor and get a set of these. Highly recommended. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Works great and a great tool for the price.
After reading all the previous reviews of this tool, I was a little hesitant but decided to purchase it anyway since I was not ready to buy a dedicated mortiser. I needed to make tenon and mortise joints (my first ever) in hard maple for a children's play table. As in the previous reviews, the case is clearly not meant for this tool (but I use it anyway to keep the tool "somewhere"). Set up was very easy on a Delta 11-990 drill press however with the adjustment of the table, fence, etc. I found it easiest to set up the chisel, then hold a straight edge on the tool to make the fence parallel (cutting and fine tuning the tenons later to match the mortises). The workpiece hold down worked well however the two arms to hold the workpiece to the fence would not clear the 2.25 square table legs requiring clamps (or strong fingers) to hold the piece to the fence. I've made about 150 1.25 inch deep plunges with the 1/4 inch chisel into the hard maple without any difficulty. Some tips (some of which I read elsewhere but probably have contributed to the ability to make so may cuts without a tool break): Drill speed was set slow (1100 RPM for 1/4 inch chisel); plunges were made "every other position" so the tool was always cutting 4 or 2 sides which is supposed to reduce the bending of the tool (and therefore the breaking of the tool); "pecking" was used to clear the chips (a small air nozzle would really be helpful); adjusting the hold down clamp as close to the workpiece as possible to keep from bending the tool during the retract. Based on the other reviews, I was expecting to have to purchase spare drills and the local store where I purchased the attachment carried them but 2 drills were nearly 50% the cost of the entire attachment! I didn't buy the spares and luckily, didn't need them. A great tool for the price!

4-0 out of 5 stars Keep this attachment in perspective
I have mixed feelings about this tool. Here's my pros and cons:

Pro:
Cheap - compared to a dedicated mortiser.

Fits the drill press nicely - once it's set up, it works well

Cons:
Compared to a dedicated mortiser, this is junk. But it's also a fraction of the price. So for that reason, it's a good tool to start with

Some people complain about poor chisel quality and broken chisels. I havn't had that experience. I'm getting ready to cut a bunch of moritses in white oak though so maybe my opinion will change.

When it's set up, you can't use your drill press as a drill press. This is made worse because...

Setup is horrible. In order to cut a mortise (really a straight line of square holes) everything has to be square. This is tough because the chisel and fence need to be perpendicular and parallel. Tough because the table on the drill press moves side-to-side. Then the fence turns on the table. And the chisel rotates in the fixture. I'm planning on making a jig to help line everything up.

The bottom line is that it's good to start with. I like mine. I wish they had included a jig to help with the alignment.

3-0 out of 5 stars fit???
i am still in iraq, i ordered this to go on my drill press, the dp-200 i know delta doesnt say that it fits, below some one said it did all in all ill just see if it doesnt someone let me know and i can send it to them for 10.00 less then amozon. i only gave it 3 stars for now but will update later

3-0 out of 5 stars Good tool, but not worth buying
I bought this tool with my drill press a couple years ago and have hardly used it. There is nothing wrong with it, but I find that there are several things that stop me from using it more often. The first is the setup. It takes too long and is too awkward. Personally I'd rather pop in a forstener bit into my drill press and make several passes to achieve a very good mortise - although this doesn't work if you are doing a through mortise.

PROS:
* Does the job it states
* Much cheaper than a dedicated mortiser

CONS:
* Much too time consuming to set up
* Has a very hard time cutting through hardwoods
* Chisels seem to dull quickly

4-0 out of 5 stars Fits 10" Benchtop Drill press too
I purchased this mortising attachment hoping it would fit an old Rockwell Delta drill press I just bought from an estate sale. Well, it didn't fit that but just for kicks I tried it on my previous drill press, a 10" Benchtop drill press from Delta model #DP200.

It fit like a charm and worked perfectly even though this is not one of the Delta models the instructions say that the mortising attachment fits. The chisels and bits are in perfect shape and sharp. I got clean, accurately spaced mortises on my first attempt.

The only reason I didn't give this product five stars is that one plastic handled threaded knob (used for fixing a workpiece holdown in place) was missing from the kit. I had another one the right size that fits my Delta Tenoning jig so it wasn't that much of a problem for me but still, it should have had all the parts when it was shipped. ... Read more

This really is a brute: 18 hungry volts of power behind a steel-reinforced collar, a rugged 1/2-inch chuck with 17 clutch settings and Bosch’s amazing DuraShield body housing. It’s a contractor’s dream drill, tested by Bosch to withstand a 46-foot drop onto concrete and more realistic real-world bumps and bruises. The steel-braced collar will take a drop right on the nose and still protect the chuck. It performs like the Bosch that it is, with tremendous power and ease of use. We expect this tool will last longer than most drills simply because Bosch made it so easy to replace the brushes-—external access means you can get this little maintenance job done in two minutes. Nice ergonomic touches include a wide trigger and a shock-absorbing rubber grip. For some fun, visit Bosch’s website and watch the video of a Bosch DuraShield drill like this one taking the 46-foot plunge—and keep on drilling. It’s no hype.--Kris Jensen-Van Heste ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Hang On!!
I own a remodeling company and I bought this drill about 2 months ago, I use it almost everyday; I can attest that this drill can take some serious abuse without even a whimper!! (It has now fallen of 2 roofs onto the cement below; any other drill would have been severely damaged!!) The 1/2-inch ratcheting chuck and 17 clutch settings are well engineered; this drill has tremendous power and is very easy to operate. I like the fact that it is so easy to replace the brushes (2nd set already!!) It has nice ergonomic touches including a wide trigger and shock-absorbing rubber grips that make this drill an extension of your arm. It does come with an attachable side handle to help handle all of its torque. This drill was not made for drilling a lot of large holes in concrete but is up for the task occasionally (3/8" is about max for concrete, 1/2" in brick) and works excellent for smaller sizes. This drill was made for a contractor who uses and abuses tools everyday and not the average DIY weekend warrior homeowner. I highly recommend this drill for any contractor in need of a new drill.

5-0 out of 5 stars Quick payback, accurate, easy to use
I'm a remodeling contractor who works alone. I wish I had bought the PLS1 years ago. Huge time savings, wonderful accuracy. I'm completely satisfied, and would recommend this instrument to anybody who has ever wasted time trying to make a folding rule or a tape behave reliably. The PLS1 has paid for itself on the first job. That's pretty good.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic unit
I use this thing every week. It works great and is highly accurate. Allows you to reach out to places impossible otherwise. Just how high is it from the footings to the brick freeze? Easy. Just place the tail of the laser on the footings and shoot the brick freeze. Whammo! 18'5". Great.

How far is it from this stepdown to that stepdown? Whammo! 16'8". How far is it from this layout string to the footings? Whammo!

Is this side of the porch header the same height as the other side of the porch. Shoot both sides, allowing the PLS1 to display the difference and whammo, you know if you need to level it or not.

I could go on and on. Just cost too much.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Choice
Have been using this measurer for 5 months now. Common usage has been in theatres measuring the distance from stage flooring to the grid and from floor to the pipes our stage lights hang from. The beam is bright enough to see at great distances, 300' and more. The bright beam definitely helps me when measuring the trim heights of our pipes as there are usually dozens of pipes with inches of each other and 30' to 50' above my head. The quick sampling of the device and return measurement is very handy even when the objects are in motion.

My only complaint was that of the base end which is tappered. I quickly overcame this when I discovered that the red half-moon, which you can see in the picture, rotates to create an X base allowing the device to stand on end. The ability to choose measuring from nose or measuring from base is a real plus. The ability to add and/or subtract dimensions is very handy as well.

Without a doubt PLS provides great quality and features for the money. Their other laser devices, PLS3 and PLS5 have proven indispensable to me over the past several years and the addition of the PLS1 is very welcome.

5-0 out of 5 stars PLS-1 is a great measuring tool.
I used the PLS-1 in the homebuilding and remodeling business. I can measure a house for a roof much quicker than with a tape. I can measure rooms, ceiling heights, exterior walls, lenght of rafters, floor to ceiling heights much faster, safer, and more accurately than with a tape. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Yes, Go for it
I would have given this drill a 30 star, but amazon only goes up to 5. This is the best drill I have ever owned. Perfect for the contractor, or maby the person who needs an drill. I know that this will be in my family for many, many years to come. There is only one draw back, it has a lot, or mabey even more than a lot of torque. It drove a 6 inch screw indo a piece of 4x4 with no piolet hole. And it did not even stop going apter I let off the triger, it drove it about 2" into the wood and cracked my workpiece. But all that set aside, DO buy this drill.
Hope this helped-

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best Drill
A home improvement enthusiast.
I picked this drill because I knew it would handle anything I asked of it around the home. It is my third drill over the last fifty years and know it will still do the job by my Grandsons long after I ever stop using it. It is a little heavy on the tip and so a little off balance but the extra handle compensates for that. Wish the lock on button was raised a little higher as it requires a strong and skinny finger to engage it. Otherwise, best tool I've ever owned.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic
I've used many brands of drills and always come to the same conclusion: There is no drill as good as a Milwaukee. There are less expensive brands of drills but they are of lesser quality. Buy a Milwaukee and have no regrets, it's the best, and made in the U.S.A.

5-0 out of 5 stars INCREDIBLE DRILL
This dril is incredible. It's powerful enough for any job a hand drill can do. It is a very smooth drill that is comfortable to hold. I have used it with large auger bits in treated lumber and it doesn't bog down at all.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Great Drill
I picked up this drill at home depot based on a review of corded high amp 1/2 inch drills in tools of the trade magazine. It has features and power that leave the competition in the dust.
It can spin a mixing paddle in a bucket of drywall mud, handle a 2and 9/16ths self feed bit and drive lag screws all day long. The dewalt couldnt nor could the porter cable. ... Read more
