5-0 out of 5 stars Get what you pay for?
This drill gets 5 stars for its value. How can people complain when it costs $89? Go buy a Craftsman or B&D for the same price or even more, I know this is much better. You get what you pay for. I bet these complainers also expect their Ford or Chevy to be just like a Mercedes for half the cost??? If you are a contractor like myself don't buy a $89 drill and then complain about it. This is excellent for my retired father and more than he will ever need.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good drill for home use. Needs more power.
Hitachi 14.4v drill kit is a good buy. The light is excellent, but not the reason I purchased the drill.

The drill itself has a nice feel in my hands... good balance. It's a good drill for home use, but could use extra power. Battery life is average. I've used the drill with the Kreg Pocket Hole Kit (which is outstanding), and the drill seems to run a little slower then it should when drilling the pocket holes.

If I were to need a drill for production, I would be inclined to look for a drill more high-end, like the Panasonic line for example. Having said this, I give it three stars. It's a good (average) tool.

I recommend Hitachi drop the light and upgrade the drill.

2-0 out of 5 stars Professional carpenter
I am a professional millwork installer and needed a second drill on the job. I saw this drill at a local store and thought I would buy it for the low price of $89.00 just to have it. What a mistake! After three months I decided to give it to a new carpenter as a "starter" drill. If you are a homeowner who uses a drill once a week maybe this is a good drill. All other professionals, I wouldnt even spend the money to have it in your gangbox as a reserve.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not for production
We bought one of these in September and it is worn out in January. The brushes are not replaceable, the battery contacts are bent, and the chuck is loose and wobbly. Unfortunately, we bought 3 more in December. For production, it would be one star. For home use, maybe 3 or 4 stars. It depends on how hard you use it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great value
Nice solid chuck, good clutch, enough power for deck screws, drywall screws, etc. If you're used to a 12V drill you'll notice and appreciate the extra power. Very comfortable grip and nice balance. Charging time could be quicker - it takes over an hour to charge a battery (it comes with two). Now, I wouldn't go dropping this drill off the roof or anything like that, but I give it 5 stars because at its modest cost it's worth every penny and then some. Even the flashlight, while it's cheaply made, unlike a lot of "freebies" it turns out to be pretty useful. ... Read more

Amazon.com Review

Impressively compact, lightweight, and comfortable to use, Panasonic's 15.6-volt drill/driver fits into tight spaces where other bulkier drills won't. The 3 amp NiMH batteries deliver impressive run time per charge, which is a big plus, especially if you need a tool for continuous use. What about power? This Panasonic packs up to 390 inch-pounds of torque--as much (if not more) than anyone needs in a cordless tool. The motor's electronic speed control allows full torque at any speed, so you can apply full torque while still maintaining control. The tool's dual speed ranges are 65 to 450 and 200 to 1,450 rpm. The 1/2-inch chuck takes bigger bits. The first thing you notice about this tool, however, is how compact it is (the chassis measures only 8-1/2 inches) and how comfortable it feels in your hand. The soft pad grip provides extra cushion and the tool's balance is superb, two important features if you wield a cordless day in and day out. The tool lacks an onboard bit holder, but that's about all it lacks. This drill is a smart buy for plumbers, electricians, carpenters, and even woodworkers--in short, anyone who wants a small, compact drill that packs a lot of torque and is built to last. The package includes a 45-minute universal charger and a hard-plastic carrying case. --Jon Groebner ... Read more

Features

  • Compact and lightweight for all-day use
  • Two 3.0 amp NiMH battery packs provide 50 percent longer run time
  • Delivers 390 in./lbs of torque for big applications
  • 1/2-inch keyless chuck handles larger bits
  • 45-minute charge saves time

5-0 out of 5 stars Best I've ever owned
I'm a weekend warrior but use my Panasonic cordless drill nearly every week. I've had if for more than a year. It works very well. Battery life is excellent, I will ALWAYS try to buy NiMH batteries in the future. They are far superior to NiCd batteries. (Battery life is such that I rarely have to change batteries on a weekend project. There is no "memory effect" on the batteries so I don't worry about fully discharging a battery before recharging it.) The drill itself works great. The one hand keyless chuck is very easy to use. The clutch works well. Two speeds, fast for drilling, slower for driving screws are appropriate. Size/weight/power/controls are perfect for me. (I'm an average size guy.) If I had it to do over, I would have purchased the Drill/Driver combination with the circular saw. Saw is not available w/o batteries & charger like other brands. If it were, I'd buy it in a second! Are you listening Panasonic/Amazon?

5-0 out of 5 stars Size matters.
I have done over 30 years in the remodeling trades. I have always preferred compact drills to larger ones. I have used many of the different cordless drill models; mostly because the batteries wear out and it is always cheaper to get a new drill with two batteries than it is to get two replacement batteries. I have had this drill for nearly a year now and the batteries are still working. The drill itself is light, powerful, and it has a precise feel to it that pleases me. It compares favorably to many of the 18 volt drills I have used but it is lighter and smaller. I should mention that I have never owned or used a cordless drill that I didn't like, but that being said, this is my favorite to date.

5-0 out of 5 stars the best
The best cordless drill i have used .comfortable to use
,powerful as an 18 volt model.I have used cordless tools from every major manufacturer and panasonic is the best.If only panasonic made electric tools!Panasonic never promote tools in the uk and as such there are very few stockists.

5-0 out of 5 stars Balance, power, long legs, and a helluva price
I don't understand why Panasonic doesn't push these tools. They're the best you can buy. After seven years of overloading it, I finally burnt up the 12V I had at work and bought this...
The tool: This just feels right in your hand, it doesn't tug your wrist. The chuck is much better than my old one as it ratchets in both directions. The chuck on my old tool would loosen up when I was breaking and extracting a bunch of sheet metal screws. I never ate a clutch, unlike the DeWalts our construction division bought. We'll see how this one holds up with the extra power (I've only had it for a few months). When I get into sheet metal on our equipment, I appreciate a light tool, I'm getting old. This tool weighs more than a 12V, but I can do the repetitious work without fatigue. With the higher voltage tools I need 2 hands after a while. I have a 12V at home that I DID buy from Amazon (model EY6407NQKW) xlnt.
I'm a heavy equipment mechanic/power generation technician and fully expect my 15.6 to last to my retirement in 4 yrs.

Black & Decker’s VersaPak tools are great for the homeowner, and to keep them running, you’ll want some spare batteries. Some advantages to these include their freedom from "memory," which keeps you from getting a full recharge and the fact that you’ll get at least 300 full recharges on each battery. They’ll power all the 3.6-volt VersaPak tools, including the ScumBuster and screwdrivers. Of course, once you buy a VersaPak tool, you don’t have a choice of batteries, but we’ve found these to be reliable and well able to power the 3.6-volt VersaPak line. The charger has a light that lets you know you’ve inserted the batteries for a charge, and three hours later, they’re ready to go. Our only suggestion: We’d like to see Black & Decker revamp the charger to let us know when the batteries are fully charged. --Kris Jensen-Van Heste ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Time Saver
I am in housekeeping at a camp and we have the VersaPac for our ScumBuster. It is so convenient and fast to change out because, we are very business and don't have time to spend on trying to change out batteries. With the twin charger we always have a battery ready to go. Thank you Black & Decker for making our day.

3-0 out of 5 stars Battery life
I have a most of the VersaPak tools sold to date and really do like their ease of use. We have the circular saw, 2 reciprocating saws, 5 flashlights, 2 drills, 1 stick screwdriver, 1 scumbuster that I can think of right now. THESE ARE ALL GREAT TOOLS!

They do have one BIG SHARED PROBLEM. Battery life (or lack of it).

I currently have 10 DEAD VersaPak silver batteries in my kitchen drawer and NONE are over 24 months old. The standard silver battery will hold a useful charge for about 30 days on the shelf. NONE of my silver batteries have lasted more than 14 months and a few of them died within 8 months. I do NOT put them through a charge/discharge cycle even once a day - so they are NOT lasting the '300 cycles' that B&D claims.

I just purchased 2 GOLD VersaPak batteries in May 2002 and they REALLY DO LAST LONGER while working. I hope they last longer than 12 months though. I certainly HOPE that B&D will FIX this battery problem. I like the tools, but I may need to switch to another vendor's products if this battery issue is not resolved soon.

2-0 out of 5 stars they just don't last
Batteries seem smart, but they don't last long when new (except in the flashlight) and they gradually just die off completely (and are not cheap to replace). Be forewarned.

If I ever receice this item, I might be able to rate it higher.

1-0 out of 5 stars Bad batteries
I have the entire works of BD cordless power tools including the flashlight, scum buster, vacuum, cordless drill, recip saw etc., but no batteries. I had the ones that came with the tools plus some extras I purchased seperately. After a year of use, none will take a charge. What a waste, it is a great idea, but I guess the technology is not there year. ... ... Read more

Strait-Line's claim that this is "the most capable laser level ever built" is an invitation to skepticism, but folks, after spending a little time with this model, we think it's true. Yes, there are other laser levels on the market that project both a horizontal and vertical line, but we've never seen one that lets you access the exact point of intersection—-this one does, so every job gets off to a flawless start. And flawless it is, because the Intersect self-levels within 8 degrees on a vertical surface. All you have to do is attach it to the wall (more on that in a minute) as close to vertical as you can, and Strait-Line's amazing technology projects perfectly level and plumb lines with zero guesswork for a 30 foot total horizontally and 20 feet vertically. (We'll do the math for you: That's a 600 square foot work area.) Mind you, the auto-leveling feature works on a vertical surface only, but use on the floor doesn't require leveling anyway. Another feature to love is that it leaves no marks on the wall; there are no pins to push in. Instead, Strait-Line has incorporated 3M's revolutionary Command Adhesive. Just peel, stick and remove the whole shebang when you're done, without a trace. Accuracy is outstanding, to within +/- 1/8 inch at 15 feet. This is a great tool for just about anybody, from contractors and cabinet installers to art galleries, builders, home decorators and of course, the intrepid do-it-yourselfer.--Kris Jensen-Van Heste ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Best Self Feeding Hole Saw Ever
I only have two of the Milwaukee Contractor's bits and I love them, I will buy this set soon. I use them for cutting the many holes required to run house electrical and plumbing. They are perfect for the hard to reach out of position holes that you can't push on a auger bit to cut through. They will eat their way though the center of a tree with a 3' extension.

Since they are self feeding they will not stop untill you let off the trigger and you need a reverse on the drillmotor to back them out of deep holes. Chips will back up and plug deep holes so use the reverse and clear out the chips on deep holes. ... Read more

Amazon.com Review

This is the modern version of a drill Milwaukee has been making for many years. The Hole Hawg has long been a standard in the industry, indispensable to plumbers and electricians alike, because of its very-high-torque, two-speed adjustment and its ability to fit into most tight spots when drilling through studs and top plates. Simply put, this is one of the strongest drills you can buy (people have even been known to use it as a drive motor for winding and rolling applications). The drill has both a side and a top handle. You can feel the quality of this tool when you hold it: its reinforced nylon resin casing, which is actually lighter and stronger than metal, offers terrific heat dissipation and chemical resistance. New users should be aware that, because the Hawg is typically used in heavy-duty industrial applications, its power comes with the possibility of significant kickback if a bit binds in certain situations. No question about it, though, Milwaukee's Hole Hawg is top of the line. --Tim Block ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The strongest drill you'll ever need
This drill puts others to shame. Drilling through the toughest material, this one has enough torque to get the job done, and still more to spare. The limit to what you can get done with this tool is determined not by the torque that the drill puts out, but by your own strength--when the bit binds on you, the drill will literally wrench itself out of your hands. The warning that the Amazon review gives is apt; new users should be careful with this behemoth because it has more power than you might think. Screw on the secondary, perpendicular handle to keep a hold on this monster as it bores through wood, concrete, asphalt, metal--the tool can handle it all. But can you handle the tool?

5-0 out of 5 stars Survived a flood
In addition to being an outstanding tool for electrical and plumbing, mine survied 3" of water. I let it dry out, cleaned up the outside and it runs like new still. The self-feed bits pull it through the heaviest 2" solid, dry, and well aged oak -- without burning the wood. And its not just for pros. Anyone who has to do electrical, plumbing, or has to drill through studs or heavy wood, will benefit from this tool.

5-0 out of 5 stars Made my remodelling job so much easier.
I had to do a pretty big remodolling project on my grandma's house (new plumbing, electrical, etc.) and this drill made to job much easier. Boring through doubled joists and top plate didn't phase this drill at all.

I do take the warning I've heard to heart though. I suspect that if one wasn't careful and let the drill bind up, it has plenty of strenght to break you wrist or mash any limbs that got caught between it and the structure.

I'd like to get more of the Milwaukee self feeding bits. I have the 2 9/16 bit and with this drill, it cuts through studs and flooing like butter.

5-0 out of 5 stars It's a tank
Mix drywall mud / Cement / or even chuckle drill holes, it's a tank

5-0 out of 5 stars An awesome drill motor!
I have been building my own house for the past four months. I have sub contracted some of the trades but electrical I did myself. An electrician friend of mine helped me lay things out and got me started. He also gave me some great advice when he told me to buy a hole hawg. Equipped with a ship auger bit, you can drill out an entire wall in the time it would take you to drill one stud with a 3/8" drill and a spade bit. This drill is very heavy and obviously well made. It has all kinds of power even in the high range. When you shift it into low range you have to be careful you don't injure yourself if the drill bit binds and the drill kicks back. They don't call it the wrist breaker for no reason!

I judge tools based not on appearance but on productivity and usefulness. I work a full time job on top of building a house, and my time on the job site has to be efficiently spent because I don't have a lot of it. This tool made doing the electrical work possible because it allowed me to get a LOT of work done in a short period of time. I'd still be drilling holes for my home runs had I scrimped and used my 3/8" or even 1/2" hole shooter. The bottom line is Time = Money, and this drill is a time saving work horse. I highly recommend it to any one who has a lot of holes to drill. It is a high quality piece of machinery. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Not as good as I thought
After about two weeks of using this blade I have to change my review. It still cuts a lot faster and the chipout is a lot less than the blade that came with the tile saw but...it's a thin kerf saw blade and there is a lot of flex in the blade. It doesn't like to cut bevels or cut a little off an already cut piece. I end up changing back to my old blade when I make a bevel cut or shave 1/16th off due to the flex in the blade.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great blade
I just replaced the saw blade that came with my tile saw with this blade and what a difference. It cuts a LOT faster and chipout virtually disappeared. I'm glad I bought this blade and would do it again.

5-0 out of 5 stars Hot Doggin
This is one of the best blades I've worked with. I have had many blades some good some bad, but this is by far the best for cutting ceramic and porcelain. Of course porcelain being the harder of the two and the more difficult to work with. This blade is rated at Mk's website as the best they make in 10" blades for cutting these flooring materials. The price is the best you can find at 60.00 some stores are selling at 75.00 and up to 91.00. Great buy ... Read more

Even though I do mostly electrical, buying this kit was beneficial because it includes all but one bit that I needed, which I purchased separately. 3-0 out of 5 stars Sonin 50211S Rapitest Moisture Test Meter
great price. works well. BUT... the probe is problematic. The probe breaks very easily at the prongs. The solder joint inside the probe breaks under pressure and ruins the continuity ot the prong to the unit, thus rendering it useless. Sonin does offer a replacement probe for it however for about $5.00. Sonin ships very quickly and responds to your email quickly also. This unit is a real bargin for its price, much cheaper than its counterparts. Just be prepared to replace the probe. If the probe problem was fixed this unit would be an excellent value.

4-0 out of 5 stars Sonin-Rapidtest moisture meter
This is a pin-type meter designed for measuring moisture content in drywalls and concrete. It's really not designed for measuring lumber moisture content. I own a Wagner MMC-220 that costs $270 and the readings given by the two meters are drastically different if used on wood. The problem is it's almost impossible to push those thick pins into lumber to get a good reading. If the pins are not pushed in deep enough into lumber or drywall, the reading will be off. It's not too difficult to push enough of the pins into drywall to get a meaningful reading, but it's almost impossible to push them into most woods. Surprisingly it's not hard at all to get meaningful readings on concrete because you just have to push the pins hard against concrete without having to penetrate the concrete.

Overall, as long as you use it for its intended purposes, i.e. measuring moisture content in drywall and concrete, it's a good meter, but it's useless as a moisture meter for woods.

3-0 out of 5 stars These don't last long under every day use
I do two home inspections per day. I have not had one of these last more than 6 or 7 months. They always seem to fail at the socket for the probe wire, or at the probe connection to the wire. I still keep buying them because they are easy to use, accurate for my purposes and cheap. If you must have one for your job have a spare hanging around just in case.

4-0 out of 5 stars Don't waste your money buy this one!
If you have a couple hundred dollars to blow, you can waste your money on one of those obscenely overpriced name brand moisture meters. If you're looking for something that performs comparatively just as well, but you don't want to spend a fortune, look no further. It may not look as pretty or have a digital display, but it performs the same basic function just as well as any of the higher priced models. I've been using mine for my home inspection business since I purchased it about a year ago. I haven't had a problem with it's accuracy yet and it's very easy to operate. The only complaint is that it's too easy for the power switch to turn on when it's sliding around in your tool box. I went through alot of 9V batteries before I found out that SONIN offers a storage case for it. It was very inexpensive and well worth it in what I save in battery money. As for the Meter, this is the best price I've seen it for so far. I've seen it 2-3X this price on other web sites and paid much more for mine from a home inspection equipment supplier. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars THE drill to buy
I can't recommend this drill enough. I just spend the Labor Day vacation (?) assembling a wooden playset for my daughters. Discovered my old Skil 18v wasn't what she used to be. Went to the local H Depot and waffled between the B&D and the DeWalt - let DeWalt's reputation tip the scales and I couldn't be happier. The 1 hour battery charger is perfect. The drill had no problem w/ 3" and 4" wood screws through pressure treated wood - or driving a 5/16" hole through a 4X6. It's light, perfectly balanced and w/ the 2 batteries and 1 hour charger I worked all day with no slow downs. You can tell this was built to be used. Despite the fact that B&D owns DeWalt - there are differences - DeWalt is all metal internal gears and more torque than the 14.4v Firestorm I was considering.

3-0 out of 5 stars Very useful, but did not last
We got a DeWalt 9.6 V (that looks just like this one) when we bought our house about seven years ago. We used it almost exclusively as a driver (using a corded high-speed drill for drilling), and it performed well for most tasks. And for most tasks, the relatively light weight seemed to be an advantage (until we found a bigger drill that was not much heavier). This drill did have its limitations. It did not have the power to drive 3" screws into pressure-treated pine on our deck efficiently, resulting in hands and arms that tired from maintaining pressure on the screw during the last few turns. For the deck, we ended up buying a 14.4 V Milwaukee, which was less than a pound heavier than this DeWalt. For the DeWalt, battery charging was adequately quick, but the battery use time was not particularly long. The batteries failed to hold a charge after about five years of use; we bought new batteries. We had to replace the charger once, too -- one of the metal contacts broke. Finally, after about six years of home repair use, this drill died. It started sputtering and wheezing when drilling upside-down, and then sputtered all the time -- no power. I could not take the drill apart to look for bad connections. Six years may seem like plenty of use, but it was used only on weekends at the most. Even when new, it did not seem nearly as solid and smooth-running as the Milwaukee we have now.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great drill for the price and money
I got this drill from the company I work for, as my 10yr gift. I have had it for 4yrs going on 5. The drill and one of it's batteries was left out in the rain 2 times. Each time my husband was able to revive the poor abused thing. Finally this year after 4 1/2 years with a lot of extended weekend use(sometimes 3 day and 4day week ends)one of the battery's no longer holds a charge.
We made 2 8' by 12' ground level decks with no problem. I usually predrill most items not because of lack of power, but because not predrilling causes most wood, press board, and fiber board to split and crack. We also built cabinets, book cases, work tables for our shop, work tables for my studio and uncountable other uses. I am buying another one. I just bought my husband the 12v version. I still love my drill and prefer it over the other one. I will still use my old one. One for predrilling and one for driving. I don't care too much for the quick change chucks we bought(one set from craftsman and one set from Ryobi, and a small set from Dewalt) They all have a wobble that I don't get from the drill chuck. I hope others will enjoy their drill as much as we have.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for small jobs
Great for the DIY'er. Anything more than 9.6v becomes heavy and cantakerous for small tasks. This drill will struggle with driving screws into 4"x4" treated wood unless the holes are pre-drilled. For big jobs, keep a corded drill. How often do you really need a drill with that much balls?

4-0 out of 5 stars I don't usually give four stars!
Well, I actually like this tool:

It's a decent drill...PERIOD.

1.) the chuck is only 3/8ths but that's okay for a small drill

2.) the battery is okay for a small drill. it's great that they give you 2 of them

3.) it comes with a useful and durable case

4.) the power is decent for it's size and battery

5.) I believe the MAKITA has better BALANCE but the Makita feels and sounds like it's HOLLOW inside. This Dewalt feels a lot more durable

Conclusion

Although I know this tool is not perfect, I know that it's a decent drill.

I wish Dewalt made more decent and simple tools ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars My all-around workhorse: impact wrench, screwdriver, drill
Makita impact wrenches have an excellent reputation for durability. I have seen Makita impacts used daily by mechanics and tradesmen with few issues. My Makita impact is one of my favorite all-around tools. It works as an impact wrench, screwdriver, and drill with appropriate accessories.

I use my Makita primarily for mechanic work. With a torque rating of 1110 in*lb (92 ft*lb) this wrench will break loose most bolts on a car or motorcycle. It's more convenient to use than the air impacts I also own (no air hoses to deal with and no air compressor noise). I use a 1/4" hex to 3/8" square adapter and a 1/4" hex to 1/2" square adapter to run my impact sockets. The LED light is a nice feature, but doesn't give off a serious amount of light. You will still need good task lighting.

I have also used the impact wrench to assemble a deck and fence. The Makita drives decking screws like butter. For decking work I recommend a magnetic drive guide to hold screws while driving and to make it easier to drive screws straight. Battery life was no problem on my decking project; when one battery was discharged, the one in the charger was always fully recharged.

I like to use my Makita as a cordless drill as well. This is especially handy when working on a ladder, since I don't have to carry two tools. I bought a Makita model 192891-4 1/2" keyless drill chuck and a Makita model 784635-2 1/4" hex shank to get a 1/2" drill attachment, but Makita also sells the model 192077-0 3/8" keyless chuck attachment if you only need a 3/8" chuck.

I have also used the 6914DWBE, and recommend this model over that one. The 6932FDWDE has 28% more torque than the 6914DWBE, and is worth the extra $40.

5-0 out of 5 stars Love this Tool
This is an amazing tool for driving screws. There is absolutely no wrist strain. I tried driving 3 1/2" drywall screws into 2x4's and the tool just takes off after the impacting starts. Also there is no damage to the screw head, something that will be handy with those brass screws. You need to develop a technique to use it though.
1. Need to apply just enough pressure to keep the screw moving. Too much pressure and you might slide the driver off the screw head after it just takes off.
2. I now use a transparent screw holder so that the driver dosen't slip off the screw when the screw literally takes off, and I can still see the screw.

If you are used to pre-drilling for bigger screws (and splitting the wood is not an issue), this tool is the answer.

You do have to get used to the technique, which is quite different from using a drill to drive screws. I remember sliding all over my wood floor trying to drive those long screws and the pressure it needed. Especially if your'e on a ladder. This is the answer. I chose the 14.4V versus the smaller 12,9.6V just for commonality of batteries with my drill. The extra 200+ in-lbs of torque is just a bonus. ... Read more
