Amazon.com Review

Milwaukee's close-quarters drill is designed to make drillingin tight and hard-to-reach spaces as easy as possible. The drill has astout 3.5 amp motor that provides trigger-controlled variable speedsfrom 0 to 750 rpm. It also comes with a heavy-duty keyed chuck. Toprevent loss, a chuck key attaches to the cord via a rubber tie. Thetwo things that make this drill so effective in close-quarters work arethe 55-degree chuck angle and the molded grip situated directly behindthe chuck--two features that combine to put the user's pushing forcedirectly behind the bit. This is key, of course, because you tend tohave less strength to offer when you're holding a drill in a tight orhard-to-reach space. By making efficient use of the strength you do putinto the operation, Milwaukee's drill makes the job that much easier.Lastly, we also really like the convenient location of the triggerswitch, even if it is sometimes a little too easy to pull before youintend to. This drill comes in handy for electrical work and cabinetry.Milwaukee also makes a 3/8-inch chuck with a higher top speed.--Brian Trinen ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars LOW Torque Applications ONLY
Purchased this product instead of Magnum 3300 because I only had a few hundred holes to drill for running wire and figured that afterward it would be more applicable to a variety of home rennovation uses. High torque application made mincemeat of the helical gears. If you plan to run a lot of wire or pipe, buy the right tool for the job-not, as I did, this product. I will try to find a rebuild kit for the gearing--and buy the big guy as well. I have also used the little drill to work under sinks and etc and have been pleased. I just think that there should be a warning on the outside of the box "NO LARGE DIAMETER BITS OR AUGER BITS."

1-0 out of 5 stars Close Quarter Drill not worth it!
My wife purchased a close-quarter drill as a Christmas present in 2001. One year and 3 months later, it no longer works. Apparently it can't handle 3/4 and 1 inch bits. I called Milwaukee to get service, and they tell me that I abused their heavy duty drill. I personally would not recommend this drill to any contractor that needs a tool that will last.

3-0 out of 5 stars I really wanted to like this drill...
I used this drill for doing the low voltage wiring for my house ... it worked great for two weekends and is now shot. I was probably using bits that were too big for the drill (5/8" and 1" auger bits), but it would bind up and (eventually) I think the gears wore out. Now it just sounds like it's ratcheting and it won't drill into anything with a bit bigger than 1/8" or so.

While it worked it was great... handy around the corners and worked like a champ. As long as you don't need something that is truly heavy duty (ignore what it says on the box), this is the drill for you.

5-0 out of 5 stars Just what I expected from Milwaukee
Switched from Porter Cable to Milwaukee recently and I am glas I did. This drill performed better than expected. I used this in floor joists with three quarted spade bits for wire and boy, did it do the job. It was very fast and was comfortable to boot. Great Job, Milwaukee, keep up the good work.

4-0 out of 5 stars Fits in tight spots and is powerful and light
This drill is a great alternative to the more expensive and beefier 1/2" right angle drill from Milwaukee. The angle of the drill head to the body is not perpendicular as you can see in the picture and that makes for great comfort in using the tool plus it is very light. I had to reroute some electical wire and this is the tool to cut new holes into the wall studs. I only gave it 4 stars due to the chuck being somewhat difficult to spin by hand due to a small surface with which to grip and the fact that it didn't turn very easily. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Very happy with this purchase!
My wife bought me this drill for my birthday and I've been very impressed with it. I've used it to drill large diameter holes and have also used it as a screw gun, it works extremely well in both areas. Everything on the drill seems well made, no small parts to break off. I especially like the 2 fingered trigger and egronomic grip for applying pressure to the bit.

I don't see how anyone could be disppointed with this tool.

5-0 out of 5 stars Well Built & Great Price
I use Forstner bits for wood boring and this is the best hand drill I have ever used. The high torque and low RPM's are a great combination. If you plan to use wood boring bits with this drill, I recommend using the side grip to avoid injury if there is a kick-back, this drill has that much torque. If I lean on this drill with the full force of my 275 pounds it barely slows. It has handled everything I have thrown at it with no problems. The handle is very comfortable and uses a two finger trigger. The weight is well balanced for a heavy drill.

what I was looking for in a drill is Torque, this one has it.
I highly recomend it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Optimist in Waiting
I am continually impressed with Hitachi tool performance, from the durable NR83a framing hammer to the variety of their smaller power tools like belt sanders and drills. The new recip-saw looks a bit like a fish, we fondly refer to it as "the big bass" when we're faced with a tough cutting job. We are waiting to see if this green machine can outdo anyother red or yellow rival.

I ordered this in August.....! Where the heck is it. In the past Hitachi has not let us down and the same is true for Amazon... so what's up...I've been patient, please find out what the hold up is. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars NiMH batts
I got my Makita drill/flashlite combo with the NiMH batteries because I have had little success with CADs staying charged and if they aren't completely drained when you recharge them they defect out immediately (how do you tell when a battery is 100% drained and not 99.2%?).
I have almost the same problem with the Makita NiMH batts -- if I don't charge them all the time (my Makita is for home use) they drain out in a few days, and they lose charge very quickly. I have yet to start a job without having to charge them first. I thought perhaps it was because I left them in the tools but that wasn't it.
Makita simply has terrible batteries.

4-0 out of 5 stars Makita 9.6V Battery
During it's day no one could beat this set up. I have had this battery, and the drill it came with, since 1985 and it has never let me down.

4-0 out of 5 stars Worth every penny
If you have any of the older cordless tools you will eventually need one of these. They are as tough and dependable as batteries get. These are about the only batteries that it makes more sense to buy than to replace the whole tool. As an example look at the 12v NIMH battery . They run about 150.00 for a pair.A whole new drill kit can be had for that. I would much prefer NIMH batteries but they are much more expensive and won't take as many charges in the long run.So I feel these are not that bad of a deal.

1-0 out of 5 stars Why doesn't Makita improve their 9.6 Volt Battery?
Sevral years ago I purchased several Mikita 9.6 Volt powered tools. Seeking standarization within my shop I felt comfortable that at least the battery powered tools had a common power source.

My mistake (and my recommendation to you all) was not numbering the five batteries. Using the batteries indiscrimetly (?) allowed a defective battery to go undetected It wasn't for several years that I had a project that required the constant use of all of my batteries that I found that one would not take a charge. I tried draining the battery down, with hopes to recharge from zero as it showed 9.6V on my VOM. Forget it! When I contacted my local Mikia repair station they indicated that "they never heard of that sort of problem. So I sent "that sort of problem" to them they called back only to tell me that the battery was out of date = so sorry!...so mark your batteries and rotate them before the warranty expires, and you would get a charge out of it.

1-0 out of 5 stars . . .
The 6300 series nicad batteries are not as cost effective as the newer 9300 nimh batteries, which, although about 33% costlier, take up a 65% greater charge and are, otherwise, completely interchangeable with the 6300. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Works great!
I purchased this screw gun for my carpenter husband (he has over 16 years experience and loves this screw gun as well) to use when building our deck. I love this screw gun! I ended up using it to screw in over 4,000 screws in record time. I am not very good with the regular cordless drill driving in screws, but this is a dream come true! It was easy to use and I only used two bits for all 4,000 screws. To all of the men out there that say this doesn't work, I don't know what you were doing wrong but it worked wonderfully for this woman.

5-0 out of 5 stars Paid for itself on first job!
This is a great labor saving tool that I have used extensively. The Quik Drive works great if you just play by the same rules you would use with any screw gun. DON'T LET THE BIT GRIND! Quik Drive includes 2 free bits in every box of screws and this is more than enough if you don't let the bit spin and round off in the screw head. I can typically get through several boxes of screws on one bit. Stay on it and follow through, remember this is a screw gun and not a nail gun. If you start having trouble, check the bit and replace it if it is rounded. Do this and with a little practice, you can save 50-80% of your labor. This is one of the best tools I have ever used!

2-0 out of 5 stars Great when it works
Bought this screw gun to screw down subflooring on a house addition. Thought it would make a multiple day job on my knees , a one day job standing up. When it worked, the screw gun was great. Drove most screws flush. But it would soon start to strip screws and not drive them all the way in. I figured out that the bits were getting worn fast. As soon at the bit became worn, it wouldn't drive the screws all the way. Each box of screws comes with 2 bits, but that's not enough to even drive half a box - and the bits are small (special) not the standard 1/4 inch hex bits and hard to change out. I would recommend buying a couple of packs of bits for each box of screws you buy. I've got a drywall job coming up and I'll give it another chance, but right now I really wish I hadn't purchased this tool. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A quick and accurate way to predrill hinges
This bit drills just the right hole for it's specific purpose. Only negative is that it tends to clog with wood shavings and stick. It greatly improves the speed and accuracy of predrilling hinges.

3-0 out of 5 stars How deep can this bit drill?

3-0 out of 5 stars Makita DA6300 1/2" drill should have a safer switch
I've owned one of these drills for eight years, and use it for heavy-duty hole cutting, such as 4" holes into wood. (Am an avid do-it-yourselfer.) I own a half-dozen other drills (electric & battery), plus other small right-angle drills, so I ONLY use the DA6300 for drilling large holes, which is what it's designed for.

It's quite easy to select 300 or 1200 RPM via a slide switch on the side of the unit. Use 300 RPM for the largest holes, and 1200 for smaller holes. At the 300 setting particularilly, this drill has enormous power & torque. For safety sake, you MUST concurrently hold tightly onto two of the three handles (spade handle, trigger handle, or side handle) when drilling large holes, or, when the bit binds, it could otherwise twist/break your wrist. The quality of the drill, its chuck, and chuck key -- is first rate, although the tool case is cheaply made. It's realitively easy to move the spade handle to a different position, but it requires a wrench. I don't move the handle very often, so that's not an issue for me.

The reason the rating isn't higher, is the switch. The rocker switch, operated by your forefinger, has three "click" positions; forward, off (middle position), and reverse. If it's in F or R, and you release the switch, the drill keeps running. That's fine if that's what you wanted, but if you want it to stop instantly, YOU have to click the switch to OFF -- and not OVER click it to the opposite bit direction. Here's an example of the problem this switch causes: I used the DA6300 today to cut a horizantal 3 1/2" hole into a 6 x 6 timber laying on a concrete slab. Since, in my experience, virtually EVERY time you cut a large & deep hole, the bit will bind one or more times, I try to be ready to switch the drill off when that happens. Therefore, one of my hands is always on the handle with the switch, with my forefinger ready to turn the unit off. About the 3rd time the bit stopped today, I wasn't quick enough, and the drill twisted counter-clockwise -- the handle cracked as it smacked in the concrete. All this before I could react and turn it off. The motor hummed for a brief spell (as the drill was still trying to turn the bit clockwise) while I was fumbling for the off position. The DA6300 would be a safer, in my opinion, if it normally shut off when you released the switch, unless, via a button, you had selected STAY RUNNING. That's the way all my other drills work. I weigh 260 lbs., lift weights, and am still not strong enough to keep the drill from twisting quickly, if the bit binds. A smaller person could get hurt.

IF Makita has redesigned the switch to turn off when you release it, I'd rate this drill a 5. (I'd rate the tool case is a 1.) My advice is to check it out in person, locally. If the switch arrangement has not been redesinged, try to find a competing unit with a safer switch set up. If the competition has this type of switch, the Makita is [otherwise] a fine machine. ...
