When it comes to recip saws, Milwaukee is the undisputed king, the "Sawzall" name serving almost as a generic label for all reciprocating saws (to Milwaukee's chagrin, we're sure). The flattery is completely deserved, especially when you factor this model into the mix. It's the only cordless recip saw we've seen with orbital blade action for serious cutting jobs, yet it weighs under 6 pounds. Plus, it's incredibly compact and actually fits between 16-inch-on-center studs. Milwaukee's clever reversible battery mount lets you get into spaces other recips can only growl at. Adding to its charm is a six-position handle for even the most awkward cutting angles. And it cuts at an impressive0 to 2,700 strokes per minute. Milwaukee says their Hatchet will cut up to 85 2x4's on a single charge, but we have to admit we didn't test that capability. Milwaukee's Quik-Lok tool-free blade clamp is a breeze to use, and it takes universal 1/2-inch shank Sawzall blades. Tight quarters? Just reverse the blade. The other tool in the set, the Lok-Tor Hammer Drill, is the king of torque. Milwaukee's Lok-Tor models have an all-metal, single-sleeve ratcheting chuck with carbide jaws, so you know the grip is the ultimate. It has to be, because this drill stands ready to deliver 495 inch/pounds of torque. It feels great in hand, thanks to Milwaukee's thoughtfully designed grip and auxiliary handle. There's not a contractor out there who doesn't need this combo.--Kris Jensen-Van Heste ... Read more

Features

  • Limited Warranty
  • Hammer-Drill feature an all-metal ratcheting chuck with carbide jaws for the highest grip torque on bits
  • Milwaukee-built motor provides up to 495 in./lbs. of torque
  • The Hatchet features a 6 position pivoting handle and an Orbital action selector for aggressive wood cutting or straight reciprocating action for metal and plastics
  • Milwaukee's exclusive reversible battery allows users to adjust balance and get into tight spaces

Black & Decker’s VersaPak tools are great for the homeowner, and to keep them running, you’ll want some spare batteries. Some advantages to these include their freedom from "memory," which keeps you from getting a full recharge and the fact that you’ll get at least 300 full recharges on each battery. They’ll power all the 3.6-volt VersaPak tools, including the ScumBuster and screwdrivers. Of course, once you buy a VersaPak tool, you don’t have a choice of batteries, but we’ve found these to be reliable and well able to power the 3.6-volt VersaPak line.--Kris Jensen-Van Heste ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Low power for the replacement 3.6v I ordered
The new Versapak battery I recieved was weaker than the origional five year old battery I still had. One of the two origional batteries quit working and I ordered a new one. The new one delivered only about half the torque to my screw driver and did not last long even after overnight charge. Perhaps I could have just recieved a defective one. I like the B&D cordless driver and will try again to order another one.

3-0 out of 5 stars Don't hold charge as long as expected
To those people that can not find batteries without the charger, I say you will need at least two chargers at all times. The batteries need to be in a constant state of charge while you are using the others. The shelf life of the charge is pitiful and the length of charged batteries is not anywhere near your project-required time.
On the positive side you can not find a better "versatile" cordless system and this has make it possible for me to do many projects tat would be clumsy if I needed a cord.

3-0 out of 5 stars Versatile but weak
I've got a number of the Versapack tools including the drill, screwdriver, and mini-circular saw. For small jobs like putting some screws in or cutting thin pieces of wood, they're fine. Anything that will take more than a few minutes of use will require more batteries because they die so quickly. This line would have been a lot nicer if the batteries were more powerful. Also, it would be nice if the chargers told you when the batteries were fully charged.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good for around the house jobs
I've got a number of versapack tools--drill, flashlight, Wizard, and multipurpose saw. I've found them useful for little short jobs around the house--light and easy to use. The problem is that the batteries run dead almost immediately, so I've ended up having to have a lot of spares charged for those occasiona when I need a tool for more than a few minutes. It's still cheaper than buying a higher end cordless, and since the tools are so light, for small jobs they are a lot nicer to use. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars If You Buy This You Must Be Crazy ! ! !
I have this product and it is extremely overpriced
and poorly designed. Using the gun with the small
cartridge is OK with no problem but trying to use the
gun for the large cartridges is almost impossible!
In order to use a large cartridge you have to put the
cartridge in a tube and connect the tube to the gun.
This is done by compressing a hard rubber "O" ring and
here is the problem. Using all my strength I cannot
exert enough pressure to compress this "O" ring and assemble
the gun. Perhaps this is just the fault of the cartridge
but this should not happen. You cannot have a caulking gun
that will work only on certain cartridges.
It is better to have two guns (one for small cartridges
and another for the large catridges). For the price of this
gun you can purchase two guns. You just have to look around
spend some time. I returned this gun and now have two seperate
caulking guns that work great (and have money let over)!

5-0 out of 5 stars Caulkmaster is worth the money
I am one of those people who are just plain bad at caulking, put on about half a tube, and then smear the excess on my pants leg. This product allows me to draw a perfect bead, thin or wide depending on who hard you squeeze the trigger. It's heavyer with the larger tubes but it works great for putting down construction adhesive to lay subflooring. If you have a compressor on the job you need this gun.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great tool, with some improvements needed...
I do love this tool, but with some reservations! The 1/10th gun worked great for me, except for the higher cost of "tubes" VS the 30 ounce "tubes". The 1/10th gun is lighter to use, thus less tiring. You do take more time changing "spent" tubes, with the 1/10th gun. The 30 ounce gun had problems with the large "o-ringe" seal that kept twisting in, and loosing air pressure, cuasing construction delays, having to fix the ring, that I got so tired of fixing, that I just stopped using the 30 ounce gun. This was a shame since I paid for both, and now use the 1/10th gun, due to the above problem. The 30 ounce tubes are also cheaper, down the road. I also noted the pressure clamp on the air hose to come loose, and need clamping. I recommend the manufacturer look at the above complaint, on the clamp and 30 ounce tool. The 1/10th gun works great, and sure beats hand caulking. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Where is the UL seal?
This is an excelent grinder. I delayed getting it because I could not determine why it was not UL listed. I have two other grinders... a top of the line Sears Craftsman and Dewalt's best model... it's easier to have three grinders than to be changing attachments all the time. I didn't want to by a third top of the line unit. This one is comfortable, powerful, and the power switch is in a logical location and is easy to turn off quickly... beware some other low-priced (non-UL) grinders have a very clumsy switch which could be difficult to ulock and turn off in an emergency. I have not been able to determine why this one is not UL listed... I called B&D and they gave me the run-around... I bought the grinder anyway.

5-0 out of 5 stars Easy to use
The Black and Decker G850 is a breeze to use. I needed a grinder for a project and spent more time then I should have looking for one at a good price and that would meet my needs. I actually took a chance on this grinder. I have used other small angle grinders at work,,but this one was much easier to handle. I could grip it at the center,,near the top or about anywhere and the balance was great. Sure makes it easy on the arms. I also like the area were the switch is at, toward the rear, under the handle. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Does just what it is designed for
I really like this heat gun. It is commercial quality. It will last for years, can be rebuilt ( if necessary ), the base is very convenient ( this does not cool quite as fast as the variable heat range model ), and always comes up to the same temperature. I think if I were to buy another the variable heat range model, just because there are times when this model is too hot for the project at hand, and varying the distance between the gun and the work is not enough. That is my only complaint w/ this tool, but it is not the tool's fault. If you intend to use this gun for the same project and you don't need to vary the range, this is the heat gun to buy ! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent!
I read these reviews often but had never been moved to write one until now as this is one of the first products that exceeded my expectations.

I had a medium size dry wall project coming up and had heard about these rotary saws but after reading the reviews for them all, I was in doubt: everyone said the DeWalt and Rotozip were loud, messy, difficult to control, and broke bits off often. I like Bosch's products so I decided to take a chance on it. It has been great. I have now finished the project and I can say that all the complaints about the other models do not apply to the Bosch. It is not too loud nor does it send a cloud of dust in one's face. After a couple of cuts it was easy to control and I used the same bit for two weeks without it breaking or seemingly going dull. I have not tried it with real hard surfaces like tile but so far it has been tremendous. It has saved so much time and seems so well made. I liked it so much that I hope this review helps others who are deciding what product to buy.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great tool
I have used a Rotozip many times and liked it, but when I tried the Bosch 1639K Rotary Saw, i knew it was a Bosch because it is smoother and the controls are better. Bosch is one of my favorite tool makers, I would try anything they make. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Like a Dremel, but with POWER!
I've owned a dremel for over 5 years. We just moved, and I could not find it, apparently hidden deep within our catacombs of packed boxes. It was just the excuse I needed to upgrade. Alas, I saw the RTX tool, an apparently updated Dremel. The RTX attachments and chuck appear to be similar to a Dremel, but the RTX has enough power to be a "real tool". I'm very satisfied with this purchase. I will be giving this gift to many on my Christmas list this year. Other Dremel improvements (over my old Dremel anyway) * Better case, much larger, with a separate tool holder. The dremel sometimes required a crow bar to get the tool into the case and close it. * Better speed control * flip up chuck lock to simplify chucking/unchucking attachments BTW, I use the tool mostly for trim work as a way to finish up coped joints. On quarter round, it does the entire job.

4-0 out of 5 stars FAR superior to Dremel - here's why:
I'd wanted a Dremel for a long time but couldn't resist when I saw a basic (the RTX-3) kit on sale for half as much, with nearly 2x the power!

PROS: A) 2 amps vs. Dremel's 1.2 gives you far better cutting power (I hardly ever need any setting but Low speed!) B) The flip-lever spindle lock is FAR easier to use than a collet-locking button - you never need a tool to change parts, and it locks out the power switch (so you can't accidentally hit the collet lock with the power on - very annoying and possibly breaking the tool). C) It's just plain better-looking than the Dremel. ;-)

CONS: B&D needs to get their act together on accessories and dealers who stock them - and/or let us know whether/which Dremel or Craftsman accessories fit the RTX! I could really use a drill press, router, or flexible extension accessory, and can't seem to find them anywhere in stores (the website isn't too helpful, here, either)

Overall, though, much more power for a much better price - Dremel's needed the competition for a long time, and B&D delivered. (I'll give 'em 5 stars when they get the accessory & distribution thing improved.)

1-0 out of 5 stars Broke on third use, customer service doesn't appear to exist
I bought this to do some tile and wood work around the house. During the first two uses of this tool I was quite happy with what I was able to accomplish with it. However, on only my third use the chuck lock jammed. For those of you that aren't aware of what that is, it is a metal spring loaded pin that stops the chuck from rotating when changing and removing drills, bits, etc. What I discovered is that this pin, while engaging the metal of the chuck is stabilized by the plastic housing of the unit. This would seem to me to be both a major design flaw and something that could be easily and inexpensively remedied in future units. The plastic had given way and now the chuck lock has been rendered useless. I contacted the retailer of the unit who told me that I had must have "abused" the unit and they refused to accept the return. I have attempted to contact Black and Decker directly via their customer service contact form on their web site to no avail. I have never received a response to either of the two inquiries that I made. What I thought would be a nice tool for the price turned into a lemon very quickly. This is the last Black and Decker tool I'll ever buy.

3-0 out of 5 stars It's okay
I'm by no means a person who has any familiarity with power tools, but one day I decided that it would be useful to get a rotary tool to deal with certain things around the house. Perhaps my expectations were a little high, but once I started using this tool, I realized that it had very limited potential. It works well enough for sanding, so long as the part to be sanded is in the open and unobstructed. But in terms of cutting and and de-rusting, it's not that great of a use. At one point I was making chainmail, and tried using the tool to cut the rings of, but the so-called heavy duty cut-off disks either blew apart or rapidly ground down too next to nothing. Granted, the tool did come in handy at times, and so it was not a complete waste. It does seem to have more than adequate power, and fortunately my tool has worked fine since I bought it.

2-0 out of 5 stars The worst customer service!
I realize that nothing is perfect. For $60 I don't expect RTX to be an Industrial tool. I did however expected it to work longer than 15 minutes! After the second use, the chuck lock failed and I had to use a small screw driver to unlock the chuck. After the 5th use, the speed controller failed. It started to hiccup while working. The sixth time I went to use the tool, it seized and smoke came out of it! Total life of this unit was about 15 minutes. I bought it more than 60 days ago so the retailer will not exchange it. I have written to Black and Decker through their web site several times. I have not heard anything from them. I realize, I may have a lemon. Not having any information from the manufacturer is the worst part. I am buying a second one now. This time I am going with Dremel. Lemon or no lemon, I am very dissatisfied with the customer service at Black and Decker. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars great saw
I bought this saw about a year ago, I'm a carpenter and use side drive skilsaws every day. The guy's I work with own a few other brands (milwuakee - makita - skil) and they all do what they're supposed to but I'll tell you why the bosh is better than all of them.. Skil: Bosh bought skil, this saw is almost identical to the old skil side-drives but without the finger lever to pull up the blade guard, also the bosh's motor is more powerful. However the now ones from skil, since bosch bought them, are cheaply made and not worth buying.. Makita: the blade guard catches on the work, the aluminum table bends easily, and the dust extraction works poorly shooting sawdust in your eyes when you are trying to see your cut.. Milwuakee: Loud!! to adjust the blade level you move the handle up and down, not pivot it like all the other saws. this is neat engineering and all but it makes the saw really hard to follow a line because the handle is so far above the blade.. now the porter cable i havent tried but it sounds like a good saw. if anyone is in the market for a new sidewinder, I would choose between this bosch and the porter cable..

5-0 out of 5 stars Bosch--enough said
This is by far the best circular saw I've used, and I've used them all! It is incredibly powerful, well designed, and easy to handle. Heck of a deal,I love this thing! I have yet to find something I don't like.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best Saw You'll Ever Buy
I'm a framer and general contractor in New York. I bought this saw initially because of the Bosch name (any "real" tradesman knows about Bosch). For the money you'll spend for this saw...you cant beat the damn thing. Mine has been dropped off of a roof while cutting fascia...I'd say about 24 ft. Still Going!!! I also find that it works best with 24 tooth Freud Diablo framing/decking blades. Congrats if you buy one...you wont regret it.

5-0 out of 5 stars An outstanding product
Between this bosch and the Makita's , which I looked at, the Bosch was the best in terms of build qaulity and overall stability. Makita makes very many good products. I have 2 sanders and a 12" miter saw and they are extremely reliable and dependable. However, I've begun to buy several Bosch products, most of which are very impressive, including this circular saw. It just feels as if it will last a long time and can be counted on for performing everytime time it is needed. The only other circular saw which I considered was the Metabo's, but since the price is prohibitive, I went with the Bosch. The Bosch is a bit heavier than the Makita and feels as if it is riding on rails when gliding though the workpiece. Very stable. An excellent saw that is comletely satisfying in every way.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Value Saw
This saw is at a great price/performance point. Ball and roller bearings mean long life, no slop after years of use and smooth operation. It is not too heavy, well balanced, easy to hold and a real pleasure to use. The included carbide blade cuts like a hot knife through butter on plywood and 2x6 deck materials. Handy carry bag inlcuded and the lock-nut wrench stores firmly in the handle so that you'll never loose it. Overall, a great buy. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best I've Seen
This is my second Makita 3/8 12 volt. The first is over 3 years old and still going strong, while being used professionaly on a daily basis. It is extremely powerful, rugged, lightweight, and very well ballanced and the dedicated drill/drive switch is a new and very useful touch. In comparison to My friends Dewalts (even the more expensive XRP) the Makita is MUCH more reliable. His Dewalts have seen numorous returns and repairs, albiet with heavy use.(no moreso than I put my Makitas through, though!) My next purchace is going to be a right angle model of the same. Kudos to Makita. I highly reccomend them. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars BLACK AND DECKER HEAT GUN REVIEW
IT REALLY TAKES OFF OLD LAYERS OF PAINT EASILY, BUT I AM STRIPPING A VERY LARGE AREA AND AM UNABLE TO FIND ACCESSORIES FOR IT, SUCH AS A FAN NOZZLE.

4-0 out of 5 stars GOOD BUY
This little guy works great but remember this tool is designed with the homeowner in mind and is not intended for heavy duty work all day long.See milwaukee for that. This tool can be used for so many things no shop should be without one. It is worth the price even if you only use it now and then. Just because this tool is inexpensive does not make it junk. This would suit any homeowner just fine.Remember right tool for the right job and black and decker has been doing this stuff for a long time.

4-0 out of 5 stars Heat Gun (Helps) get GI Promoted
The heat gun is a fast and easy way to not only strip paint, but to polish your boots as well. It's a lot better than the old lighter method for melting the polish on the boots. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Panasonic cordless drill/saw combo
I've owned a Panasonic 15.6V cordless drill for a couple of years now; it's a fantastic drill, the best I've seen or used. The Ni-Mh batteries are state-of-the-art; the feel and function of the tool is just about perfect. So I decided to get another along with with the cordless circular saw.

The saw is pretty good, kind of rinky-dink as far as rigidity of the saw base, but typical of these tools and it does everything I could want as long as I don't expect it to be a fine finish carpenter's saw.

So why don't I rate this kit 5 stars? Well, the blow-molded cases are worthless. If I pay $360 for a pair of good tools, I expect the case to be good too. This combo case is a huge, very inefficient storage unit with little room left over to easily store driver/drill bits, spare saw blades, etc. So minus one star for that.

And the saw has a 20mm arbor, which means you are pretty much stuck with buying Panasonic blades for the saw. You can't just go to your local hardware or Big Box store and get the typical sawblade that has a 1/2" arbor. Poor thinking, worth taking off another star.

It's too bad, I think. Panasonic definitely has the jump on every other cordless manufacturer as far as battery technology and ergonomics. They just need to work on a couple of details, and they'd be King.

Some of these manufacturer's oversights make me wonder just who does any "real-world" testing of this stuff before it reaches the marketplace. It can't be working tradespeople, or maybe Panasonic doesn't care much for the feedback?

5-0 out of 5 stars Panasonic tops all others
I managed a national-scope tool store for six years and have been working in construction trade full time for the last three years. The Panasonic drill and saw have proven to be physically tougher, batteries last longer, and have more power than DeWalt, Porter-Cable, and Makita, or any other drill I ever used, sold, or recieved customer feedback on. In our shop, the saw positively humbles our Makita and DeWalt cordless saws for power and battery life ( like 4-5 times the run time - no joke). Our 5 Panasonic 15.6v drills outpower and outlast all the drills we have ever used, including out 18V Makita and 19.2V Porter Cable, while being much lighter. If you try one of these, you will not be dissapointed. Only tip - pick up a few extra blades, they are a bit hard to come by.
Other companies may do a better job marketing, but Panasonic does a better job buiding quality tools that perform better than the others in a hard use setting such as my cabinet shop. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Works for me, every day.
I think this is a much better machine for polishing cars - in the dual action mode - than any random orbital I've ever used. In the dual action mode there is enough movement between the pad and the paint to get work done while being safer and easier to control than my Makita 9227C polisher that I use when I have to cut fast. Also, by using the B06040 after my rotary polisher I've been able to remove all the swirl marks and produce a really terrific finish on all kinds of paint from really old lacquer to the most modern urethane.
So far, the machine has run like a champ every day for a couple of months with no trouble at all. I hope my experience is more indicative of the way this tool performs than is the experience of the other reviewers of this tool.

This is a follow up to my review: In the six months since I wrote that review this machine has only gotten a bit quieter. It hasn't been any trouble and I run it hard every day.

1-0 out of 5 stars Follow-up on repairs
I have had this sander at Makita's regional service center (the second time) for over 4 weeks, and still no sander. They have told me that the parts needed to fix it are "on national back order" and were unable to provide any estimate of when I might have the sander back. I have already purchased a Porter Cable sander as its replacement. I have suggested to the Makita regional repair manager (in Chicago) that this kind of treatment was unacceptable, but with no results. I beleive that they should have replaced the sander with a new one after it failed the second time. It is unreasonable to expect me to pay for this sander, two trips to the service center, three long distance phone charges and a replacement sander so I can continue in business.

1-0 out of 5 stars Follow-up after repairs
From my earlier review, you will recall that I had problems with the hook & loop sanding pad and the rotation mode of sanding. I received the unit back from the Columbus, Ohio regional service center (after more than twice the quoted repair time) and the rotation feature broke again within 30 seconds of my first use on some poplar trim. At this point I am quite dissatisfied with this product and Makita as well. This sander cost about twice what comparable products without the rotation plus random orbit mode cost, and it is essentially a very heavy, bulky and expensive 6" random orbit sander. The regional service center promises to get it right this time, but to be truthful, it was defective from the start. I attempted to contact Makita (in California) but met with only automated phone systems and a long distance bill. It will be the last tool I ever purchase from Makita for my small cabinet shop.

3-0 out of 5 stars Great sander, but reliability in question
When I purchased the Makita B06040 sander a few months ago, I was initially quite pleased with it's performance. In the random orbit mode it is comperable to similar 6" models from other manufacturers, but in the random orbit plus rotary mode this thing could really remove material fast, without the swirl marks from a rotary only sander. After a few weeks of use, the "stop ring" which is engaged to produce the rotary motion with random orbit failed, and the sander is now random orbit only. In addition, use in the rotary mode on oak produced enough heat to literally melt the hook and loop fasteners on the sanding pad. The sander will only function if you start it with the paper engaged to the work piece (otherwise it just flies off like a 6" frizbee). I have returned it to the local Makita service center for repairs, but have not received it back yet. ... Read more
