4-0 out of 5 stars Able and heavy, but buy new
I ordered this unit, reconditioned, from Amazon at the end of August, beginning of September, and got it soon thereafter. Strategic parts were missing. It took about two months and at least five phone calls to get all the missing parts. Besides that, the blade had obviously been used--had tar on it. For the money I saved, I would recommend paying the extra $60 or $70 for a new one.

By saving money, I lost time and have yet to finish the retaining wall I specifically bought it for. I will resume in late winter or early spring.

In the meantime, the saw is an excellent piece of equipment. Easy to use, has an extender, also has the slots on the underbody to accommodate two parallel 2-by-4s if you want to fashion a miter table. Fully assembled (with extension platform) the unit is heavy, which reflects its sturdiness. It has a transporting grip which enables carrying it with one hand. I keep it in a backyard shed, but to move it requires grunt effort. In the future, I will move it using a small Red-Flyer wagon.

In the meantime, I have a 10" Makita miter saw (non-compound). Originally, I thought I would sell it, thinking that having the Porter Cable would make it redundant. No way! I just completed a closet in one of my rooms. I used the Makita to cut the studs. The Makita is the perfect miter saw for 2-by-4 framing. And, you guessed it--it's very light. I would say the Makita 10" is a truly portable saw, whereas the Porter Cable 12" is a transportable saw.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is a great saw.
This is a great saw, at a great price. It had absolutely no problems. I mounted an 80 tooth Forrest Chopmaster, It cuts everyting that I have given it with absolutely no hesitation. The system that Porter Cable designed into the saw for mounting on 2x4's at the job site is ingenious, and works like a charm. I am very happy with this purchase, and will always look for reconditioned tools from now on.

1-0 out of 5 stars Porter-Cable Yes! Amazon Reconditioned Products No!
Am returning this item as it was received without any owner's manual or other documentation and was covered with sawdust. If this saw was reconditioned then I don't know what reconditioned means. The blade actually had sawdust caked behind the teeth. I would assume that reconditioning at least means blowing the saw off with compressed air before packing for shipment... That way I'll get the owner's manual and warranty info too.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great deal for the best saw in its price range
If you can get PC reconditioned tools, buy them! They are mostly trade show demos and I couldn't tell the difference from a brand new one. Also they come with exactly the same warranty. The saw arrived with a couple of little things missing. (dust bag and the clamp retaining knob) but PC replaced them immediately. Very well made, balanced and accurate. It is great to be able to make a table stand out of standard 2x4 s and a cheap saw horse. PC paid great attention to detail when they designed this one. Went through pressure treated 2x6 4x4 and 2x4 like butter. A great choice for professionals and serious doityourselfers. Very happy with the product and I believe you will feel exactly the same way.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best of the bunch
bought this saw last year after a long period of comparison with competing 12-inch saws in this price range. If you examine similar saws from DeWalt, Makita, and Bosch you'll find that they all offer a high level of performance, and all four come in at about the same price (excluding any special one time sales offers you may find). What sold me on this one was the rock solid construction, and what I consider to be a couple well thought out design elements. I really like the way this saw was designed to mount directly on to 2x stock. This allowed me to make a really inexpensive and effective stand out of home made sawhorses. With the saw mounted on my stand, I can attach 2x4s on edge to the stand itself and have instant supports for longer boards. Try setting this up using a pre bought miter saw stand and you'll pay a lot more money. For workshop use this is ideal, and for jobsites--well there's always a couple sawhorses around right? Another feature I really like about this saw is the miter gauge. While the gauge on the DeWalt I saw is printed to a piece of thin sheet metal which is riveted to the saw body, Porter-Cables miter scale is actually embossed steel, so that even if the paint wears off (and eventually it will) I still have my scale. When the paint on the DeWalt scale wears off, you're out of luck. Some people have complained that the table is not level side to side. I've checked mine and found it to be as close to level as the tables on DeWalt and Bosch saws owned by my friends. I've done some really fine work with this saw (using a Freud blade not the one that came stock) and haven't had a problem with accuracy yet. This is not to say that other folks didn't get saws with a less than true table, just that mine is great. In all honesty, I think that the Bosch saw is just as good a choice as this one, and the real reason I chose the Porter-Cable over the Bosch was that the PC was on sale when I was ready to buy, and the Bosch wasn't. ... Amazon.com Review

This review refers to the new model of this tool. This is a reconditioned powertool. Reconditioned generally means that the tool has been returned to the manufacturer, who brings the tool back to like-new condition. Some tools may contain cosmeticblemishes. Reconditioned tools come with the same warranty as their newcounterparts.

Powered by a burly 15 amp motor, Porter-Cable's new 10-inch sliding compound mitersaw is winning the industry over. The saw's remarkably smooth slide action lets you glideeasily--and precisely--through trim cuts, while the saw's big motor hungrily powersthrough larger work pieces. Also, thanks to the well-designed slide, this saw has the mitercapacity to handle a two-by-twelve at 90 degrees and a four-by-four at 45 degrees. Youcan also miter up to 57 degrees right and 48 degrees left, which comes in handy if you'reworking on a custom deck that features some tight angles.

Porter-Cable definitely put some time into the details of this saw. The rails slideunderneath the saw's table, instead of above, which ought to better protect them, especially when you're transporting the saw. The tool also has a big table that givesplenty of support space for workpieces, making it easier to hold them securely in placewhen cutting. There's an electric brake (all miter saws should have one), and the bladeguard retracts smoothly. The D-handle design makes the saw comfortable to operate witheither your right or left hand, which is convenient considering the wide range of cutsyou're likely to make. The work clamp makes it easy to hold pieces in place, keepingyour fingers away from the blade. We really like how the saw's base can mount on theedge of two-by-fours, creating a quick job site stand. Very clever.

A single onboard wrench makes all the adjustments, including blade changes. The fenceon this Porter-Cable is easily adjusted--in case it gets knocked out of alignment. It's true,a guy could really rave about this saw for quite a while. The miter and bevel gauges aregreat, with embossed marks stamped into stainless steel, so it'll be just as easy to dial inthe exact cut three years into the future as when you first take the tool out of the box (nochintzy stickers or attached plates here). The stainless-steel detents won't ever developslop, either. Bevels are also easy to set. The three-wing screw lock is sturdy and holdstight, and there's good tension in the unlocked position--so the motor is easy to move (itdoesn't just flop over) when you're setting bevels. --Jon Groebner ... 4-0 out of 5 stars I think I will be more careful with reconditioned items
I've purchased quite a few reconditioned tools, and had excellent luck. This item brings one point to my attention. These items sometimes do not come in the original manufactures shipping carton, and possibly these items can damage themselves due to there size and weight.

Another thing to note, the replacement saw (again a reconditioned one) runs perfect. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good design, reasonable value
This is good portable table saw, and the reconditioned one I received was in perfect condition except for a minor scratch or two.

Plusses: It has standard 3/4" slots for its full-size miter gauge, a solid table, and a real throat plate that can be changed to accomodate a dado up to 11/16". It has an excellent splitter/guard. The elevation mechanism is solid and fairly smooth. The extensions to 24-1/2" work smoothly and they're fairly solid. The fence will stay parallel after you you take it out of the box if you do an initial, simple realignment. There's very good storage on the base for all the parts. It mounts on a pair of sawhorses. Setup is easy.

Minuses: The fence isn't as easy to set accurately as the superb rack & pinion-driven fence on the DeWalt Model 744 portable saw, and the base is plastic, like the other saws of this type. The packaging was too flimsy for surface UPS handling -- this thing ships at 74 pounds and it needs a stronger box and more foam -- there were loose parts that could have fallen out of the split corners of the box. Minor complaint -- the manual tells you how to check and adjust most misalignments, but not how to to realign a misaligned pointer for the tilt angle.

Advice: I looked at 5 or 6 portable table saws at stores before I bought the reconditioned Porter Cable from Amazon. No portable table saw is as solid as my big old Delta contractor's saw, but the Porter Cable a lot more solid than the cheaper Sears, Delta and Skil portable table saws sold by home centers, and better designed and somewhat more solid than the Makita. (The DeWalt and Bosch available from Amazon are tops.) If you need a small saw and/or portability, this one is a good value, although I would bet that a reconditioned DeWalt or Bosch would be good values as well.

1-0 out of 5 stars Unpleasantly Surprized
The first shock I got when I opened the package was that the entire base of the saw is a very thin plastic, including the mounting structure. I have looked at a lot of table saws (other brands) in stores and they usually have very sturdy cast iron or aluminum bases. I could break a piece out of the base without even straining at it.
The second was the missing parts: assembly screws for the table insert, blade wrench, handle for the blade height adjustment and a small spring which holds the table insert was bent and useless.
As it is I can't start it up due to the loose table insert so I don't know if it really works without ordering missing parts.
I'm not happy about this! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Siding plus plastic laminate
I have used my PC siding cutters on cement siding for which it was designed and last night I discovered a new use...cutting plastic laminate. I noticed an ad for a plastic laminate cutter and saw how closely the cutters resembled the PC. I tried it and discovered that if I have the back side up, it does a terrific job.
It does a first class job on siding with no dust filling the air, not the best choice for very straight lines but great for general cutting.

5-0 out of 5 stars porter cable fiber cement shear
I have owned this fiber cement shear long enough to realize that it's a quality tool. The design is nearly flawless, effortless to use, can cut dead straight "bad joint quality". The tool will cut gentle arcs if need be. It raises no dust at all and the blades are extremely durable. It's variable speed allows the user to slow down for a "cut out". I've owned other brands of shears, some costing a hundred dollars more, and none holds a candle to this tool. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent...and a bit different.
Excellent saw. Lots of power, and the 7.25 inch blade is definitely better than 6" ... that little bit makes a difference.

It's true that the saw takes some getting used to if you're right handed (because your cutting "off" the part of your material which is holding up the saw) but with a bit of practice it becomes easy.

This saw is light -- for a high quality saw. If you're comparing it to a $... departement store saw it will seem heavy... compare it to other professional saws and it's very very light.

Case is nice. Moveable ust port is excellent. The saw is well though out on the details (for example the platform to the left of the blade is exactly 1.5 inches, so setting up a straight-edge to guide the saw is a snap).

Very happy with it.

2-0 out of 5 stars More Visability, But Poor Balance
I've been a professional woodworker in the past and I had high hopes for this product. I'm a big Porter-Cable fan, but not this time. The blade on the left does provide great visability, but the limited size of the base plate to the left of the blade and the overweighting of the motor housing toward the right makes it difficult to keep the saw from tilting when nearing the end of the cut. As the saw tilts to the right at the end of the cut, the lower portion of the blade digs into bottom edge of the board. If you care about having a vertically square end on your board, you're in for a challenge. With practice, one might learn to overcome this stability problem, but a careless moment and you'll have to cut again... and again... and -- well, you get the idea. Great saw for the left-handed, or for when someone else is around to hold the bulk of the board on the right side of the saw... but then there's no increase in visability since the "good" board is back on the opposite side of the blade. The directional dust spot is a great idea, however.

5-0 out of 5 stars saw for all jobs
I do a lot of different things at work, from framing to finish, forming for concrete and all sorts of stuff. This saw handles it all. I have never liked worm-drive saws because of three things 1-excessive noise, 2- excessive maintenance, and 3-they kick when you fire them up. This saw is great, I have always had sidewinders, but was fed up with looking over the saw body to see my blade. The left blade on the Porter Cable solved my problem. Good power to get through all types of lumber and a light feel, and smooth start. Last week, my girlfriend and I built raised vegetable beds and she had a blast using it, she wasn't afraid at all, even when she put it in her left hand. How many saws can a beginner feel comfortable with in the left hand? ... Read more
